Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
Vanguard still in business:
"Vanguard is all about the little guy, and punching Wall Street in the nose". Until you have to deal with their customer service, which is abysmal. I have one small holding with Vanguard, which I dread moving, but whi…
Royce has had a handful of good funds, but more than a handful of moves demonstrating their inability to act as true fiduciaries. I've documented some of them here from time to time. The first I noticed was several years ago when in their annual r…
@Mark -- the metaverse is more than a name change or re-brand as i understand it. Zuck has been working for sometime on related projects (oculus). I don't think it's smoke and mirrors.
That said, i struggle to see the allure of a all-encompassi…
I'll be interested to see how much contagion there is end of day following the FB news.
Bit of a bummer that one of my "conservative" allocation funds (PROVX) is ~4.7% FB.
One more comment (which perhaps gives away my age) -- not getting the metav…
I would wager: market over-valued; political & geopolitical concerns; lingering supply chain woes w/ Omnicron, rotation out of growth, Bitcoin nervousness. Quant trading alogorithms.
Maybe, just maybe, folks are also worried about having CO…
@Sven: I wondered since the launch of DODLX if they would eventually move in the direction of a VGWLX or RPGAX; further, if a global balanced fund would be developed as a separate offer vis-a-vis DODBX.
The recent use of hedging in DODBX also le…
@hank -- points taken. Thanks. Not understanding your point on $100 vs. $1000; but i've always invested directly with them and they always had the $1000 minimum and $100 subsequent (I bought into DODFX as one or my first funds when I was a grad st…
I hold a constant above-average weighting in small caps in my Roth as SOP. My rationale is that in that account I have more time to ride out any volatility than in my 401k. T
In my 401k I an also overwight smid's since there is also scuttlebut i…
Ed has alluded to D&C in the past (and, I think once took a shot at, FPA). Osterweis is also in SF. If you believe the twitterverse/YouTube chatter, SF is all-around not a place to live right now.
Speaking of Ed, I did notice in one of my rec…
@yogibearbull -- i did a quick skim and i'm not seeing much more than a subtle nod to alternatives, nor to international stocks. all else being equal i'd welcome those updates, but not seeing much in the announcement to suggest that there will be mu…
Wow; First Eagle continues the AUM grab. Is this another instance of an asset manager riding the wave; or do they really think that longer-term this strategy has merit as a regular holding? Certainly they've said that their Global Fund (which I ow…
somewhat off-topic, but I heard on a podcast the other night, that in fact of their quite different economic and political systems, the Gini coefficients for China and the US are about the same
I loathe dealing with Vanguard.
The last time I tried to make an XFER in, the rep kept directing me to open an online account. When I explained that I do not want to do an online account due to some recent experiences with identity theft, she pr…
Classifying China's political / economic regime is an interesting exercise. I like "totalitarian capitalism". Certainly slave / prison labor doesn't seem to be inconsistent with certain varieties of capitalism. Genocide is another matter.
@LewisBraham -- reasonable downside protection. I know PGVFX has option (no pun intended) to use, but rarely does. Same with D&C (although they've used recently in Global Stock, Global Bond, Balanced).
OAKEX hasn't been especially stellar. I get worried with shops like Oakmark and D&C start opening up funds quickly (Oakmark has the Instl Bond Fund). I fully expect D&C to have a global allocation fund in a couple of years.
Royce & Fr…
I found the original article pretty underwhelming scandal-mongering.
For the record, the system that favors Bezos also favors me -- I have a very small number of shares in a boring old-tech company that were gifted to me a number of years ago which…
In our Roths, my wife and I both own about 12 each, all actively managed. We try not to have overlap, but still it's probably 50-60% overlap.
In our 401ks, we both own fewer since our employers both offer fewer options. In my 401k, I think I own …
@LewisBrahm -- You share my deep suspicion of the rapid institutional isomorphism and brand-refresh extravaganza as a money grab.
For the record, however, one doesn't have to be a right-wing nutjob longing for some halcyon depiction of the 1950's t…
@David_Snowball -- I really love this site and am grateful for the community you (and your predecessors) have created. Investing is a hobby of mine, but also integral to my being able to retire (some day). You and everyone here have contributed gr…
And then there's this: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9519477/Manhattan-financer-59-jumps-death-skyscraper-weeks-firm-liquidated.html
I think we in the US have a hard time defining success in a meaningful way; and we have issues with suc…
@hank -- First Eagle does value. Value has gotten spanked for a long time now, so not sure PRPFX is an apples-to-oranges comparison.
That said, in looking for a place to put some $ (I've held First Eagle Global in the past), I'm taken aback by it'…
@TheShadow -- agree. First Eagle has been on an AUM grab, but not to the extent Royce & Friends (or, whatever they call themselves) has been.
How has Royce Opportunity done since Buzz Zaino left? This always struck me as a great fund to hop i…
DODBX can be streaky, partly due to contrarian streak. I think as an all-arounder I'd go with RPGAX. RPGAX, like DODBX, can hold options (D&C seems to have used this to good effect 1Q2021); RPGAX can also hold off-shore funds which helps to de…
