I held HIEMX until Jain left, invested in his new emerging market fund starting late 2017, and also have GSIHX which he subadvises for Goldman Sachs. Its not my only emerging market or intl, but his record is excellent, and is a long term hold for …
Ive held IHI for 3 years, and have not been sorry I chose it over FSMEX, returns exceed ytd, 1, 3, 5 and 10 year over Fidelity's fund, which I did look at when choosing, but since I have FSPHX, same manager as FSMEX, chose IHI.
My best bond fund was GIBLX, up .34%, and next was PTIAX as others have mentioned. My least worst non bond was my reit fund FRIFX down .25%. Surprisingly my two emerging market funds did much better than their US or global sisters.
He might want to consider one I just added SDY an etf of high yielding stocks which have raised dividends each year for 20 + years in a row. Yield is 2.46% and seems tax efficient.
@ Old Skeet. I now have all my accounts at Fidelity, having left ML in 2016, and TWEIX and MSEGX are load free and ntf. I have found many more funds available to me at Fido than were available at Merrill, since Merrill sold only funds they received…
Gotta admit I do buy a few of these products, but they might want to rename the Cheese Wiz to College Wiz, since that is the last time I ate it :) Hate to admit but, but still like Velveeta when making a cheese sauce. I too love the frozen vegeta…
@Old Skeet. I was at Merrill Lynch when I purchased UBVSX, was able to transfer to Fidelity when I left ML in 2016. Yes, I do own AOFAX, in both taxable and roth ira, it sure is a wild ride, but have VBK and UBVSX in same portfolio to soften the blo…
@Mikew. I started the position beginning of January, and have been waiting for a dip, but haven't gotten one. Every time i decide to dca into a fund it goes up and keeps going lol. I also started a position in MGGPX, same thing. I sold IWIRX to fu…
As market grows and my 65/35 starts to creep closer to 70/30, I take my largest funds VOO and VDGIX and have dividends and cap gains go to cash, such as market we are in right now. When market falters, and equity portion goes lower, i reinvest.
@MikeW: I have been adding to ARTJX, which I bought after I sold OSMAX which I had for 5 years. I like Kanovich too, I think that much of the old portfolio has been sold if you can judge by the return ytd, my highest international performer so far …
@Old_Skeet what worked best for me were two funds UBVSX + 1.46% and PRGTX + 1.38% and a stock TRV + 1.77%, two other funds did respectively well, FISCX and TWEIX, both at + .94%.
You did very well this week, each week it seems different funds of mi…
Recently started positions in both iras for GQGPX, run by manager Rajiv Jain who left Virtus to start his own boutique firm in 2016. Owned his Virtus fund for 5 years prior to his leaving and it had an excellent record there. David highlighted his …
@msf: I did look at VBIAX originally, knowing it could be purchased as admiral class. Since I already had 4 Vanguard Funds VDIGX, VPCCX, VIG, VOO, which account for about 25% of portfolio and the American fund similar in return with strong team, opt…
BALFX (the F1 class available at Fidelity with no load and ntf) is a fine alternative to Vanguards balanced fund which is closed to new investors. New fund for me in 2018 when I decided to dial down the growth bent of porfolio. Fine history, and re…
@ BenWP what surprised me is that it was a value, not a growth fund. My two small cap growth funds AOFOX and CCASX were up over 8% and 6%, but there are solidly in the growth camp.
Convertibles are a unique class, and with the portfolio manager leaving, it makes sense to liquidate if Vanguard had their confidence mainly with the manager that retired. I hold FISCX, a convertible fund, now closed, it was available at Fidelity as…
Ditto on taking a beating last two months of year.
Best was IHI,up 15.4% which I just added to today, down quite a bit last couple of days
Worst was FRBAX down 17.5% which is banking sector, but not a significant holding in portfolio
Brokerage acco…
I sold my holdings in OSMAX today, while I still had some profits. The manager and analysts have moved over to Artisan to run ARTJX, and although it will take some time to come up to speed, will redeploy the proceeds into that fund in both my regul…
@msf: I have held OSMAX for about 5 years, and am watching both ARTJX and OSMAX to see when to switch over to Artisan, likely after first of year. It usually takes a while for the new portfolios to appear. Following Kanovich, as I like what he did …
Here's another one to check out if you can get it load waived , I bought it thru Fido, BALFX. This fund family is popular with 401k plans, and was new to me until recently, when I decided to add a balanced fund. Also have FBALX, but it's a bit more …
Have held IHI for over two years, which replaced PJP in my retirement portfolio. Since I already had an overweight in health care (still do) I wanted a portion in this subsector. Have been very happy I did since it has outperformed pharma since pu…
Hold this fund as one of my two core bond funds and have found it does what I intended it to do, be a stabilizing force in portfolio. My other bond fund throws off more income, but is a bit more volatile. It's a keeper for me.
Glad I saw this posting, as I've had OSMYX since 2012, a remnant of my time with ML. I do tend to follow good managers when they change shops, but will wait til everything shakes out and most likely follow Kanovich to Artisan. I own another Artisan…
@Old_Skeet, I hold AOFAX in taxable and in my Roth, and since I use only my taxable account for modest withdrawals, I am not concerned too much about the cap gains, will just take it as ordinary income and leaves more cash in account :). Besides, h…
Been away on a cruise of St Lawrence River from Montreal and Quebec City, Maritimes and then Maine and Boston, saw virtually little color change of fall, but came back to seeing lots of red in market :). Did start putting the money to work I had fr…
Decided to lighten up a bit on PRGTX, held in my roth, it was my largest fund, and shaved some profit, as my portfolio was getting tech heavy. Also took some profits from CMTFX which I held in my regular ira. Tech still represents after the sale ove…
I sold my PKW end of 2016, having made some good profits, saw it starting to lag , and figured i was better off putting the money into VOO, which I have been increasing over the last two years.
You have to work really hard to be this bad. Small cap value has not been a barn burner recently, but maybe they are cousins of the old steadman funds.
@guilhermes: Ive been using IHI for that sector, sold PJP last year and saw that devices were doing much better than pharma. Have two health care general funds, and right now slightly overweight in Health Care and have been for some time.
Superb graphics Old Joe, the lineup of storms to come better not impact New England, going on a cruise from Montreal to Boston in two weeks, looking so forward to seeing fall colors.
All my best to Old_Skeet and others, including my brother in law and sister in law in Chapel Hill. Last year this coming week spent in North Myrtle Beach and hope to go back , but it may take a while for them to recover.
@mjg the vanguard calculator is a nice tool. I'm at 3.5% drawdown and more than 90% probability it will last 30 years, which considering I am 67 is wishful thinking lol.
