  • The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Canadian, Gordon Lightfoot. The Great Lakes freighter, The Edmund Fitzgerald; sank in Lake Superior amidst reported 35 foot waves and horrific wave swells. I recall a news interview with a new and very young Coast Guard crew member when his ship was dispatched during the storm to look for survivors. He stated that he and the crew did not expect to survive the search in their 180' ship, in the 35' waves. A 6 minute video with images and lyrics. Perhaps a more regional song, but did have nation air play. For me and many, Mr. Lightfoot's voice is golden and haunting; as well as the lyrics and instrumentation. He hit the 'mark' in presenting this song regarding this sad event. 50 years, November 10.

Note: Before I forget. Lake Superior was dug deep (1,332 feet, 1/4 mile) during the last glacier age. 55 degree water temperature is really good during the summer along the shoreline; with some exceptions in shallow areas. There are areas along the lake (south shore) with large granite, flat ledges pushing upwards; as if to protect the land from the nasty north storms. When the north wind is wicked, one can stand out of sight of the lake and ledges and feel and, of course, hear the vibrations through ones bones from the deep sound cycle, as the waves slam hard against the granite ledge. The 'Gales of November' can be especially amazing; but we also have been at the 'lake' during the summer and have experienced nasty traveling from the WNW across the lake. A wonderful scene and sound to watch a large thunderstorm move towards one over flat water; and not arriving for, perhaps an hour or more. The smell of the rain in the air coming, is also a pleasure to the senses.

Eagle Harbor, Michigan; near the end point of the Keweenaw Peninsula, that pokes its small land mass into Lake Superior. We owned property here and made many visits to the area. We were members of the Keweenaw Historical Society and had the privilege to stay for one week at the 'Lightkeepers House' (the brown house on the left). A glorious location. This short video shows a winter storm, but not as nasty as some. On the other hand, their were summer storms, too; but many times in summer the lake surface was like glass with deep blue sky color for long periods of time. Freighters could be seen in the distance, traveling in two directions (named, upbound and downbound) ; as they passed the tip of the peninsula. One could hear the vibrations of the engines through the water 30 minutes before any visual site. A very deep sounding rumble that could not be mistaken, after hearing it for the first time.

Sugar Island/St. Marys River; Sault Ste. Marie (Soo) were the freighters pass through the Soo Locks generally traveling to and from ports in Wisconsin. This video doesn't do justice to what it feels like watching from the river bank. I presume this is the largest of freighters in the great lakes (1,000 footers). Some of the ships are international, depending on the cargo.

Busy morning! Good stuff. Love Edmund Fitzgerald. Good story.
Nils Lofgren has performed/toured with Springsteen since 1984. Great video.
Love Dire Straits - Mark Knopfler's guitar work is superb.

Another cover, you all know the original.

  • Telegraph Road. If you have ever seen How The West Was Won (you should), this reminds me of that very much.
