Is RNCOX worth holding? After looking at the M* 1 and 3 year numbers on this fund with its ER of 2.22%, I wonder if it's time to give up on it. It was once recommended as a core holding, but I'm not sure it's worth its cost. Is anyone holding it with confidence?

  • I don't think Shane came back, did he? (Perhaps not the most apropos video clip.) But, maybe he did; I don't watch classic films (or any others). I hope Ted returns, AND I hope he indicates why he posts the links. Some offer nothing useful, but I c…
  • Amen, cman. While there might be a break point at which advice changes, I presume it varies based on number of children and AUM. Since I am paid a standard fee more or less by the hour (for advice and management that probably is in the upper 2 perc…
  • Sounds like he said,"Cash." Those who heard , "Bonds" may be correct; but what bonds do you choose?
  • I admit this comment is pretty far down in the thread, but: Gundlach's argument that retirees will be buying bonds yielding under 3% because they need stable income must apply to a more successful class than mine. I had assumed that foreign governme…
  • $5K in 2010 is now $7.8+. I've done worse. It supposedly avoided the tax consequences of holding MLPs in tax-advantaged accounts. Hope that is true, since that's why I bought it.
  • If you are a short term investor, L/S health funds may add value. As boomers become geezers, it's more important to select your manager, or just buy the health fund index. These ERs don't make sense over 5 or 10 years. If you think health care fund…
  • I only signed in to mention my favorite Bernstein comment (perhaps slightly misquoted): "The only reason the term "guru" is used so often is that it's so much easier to spell than 'charlatan.'"
  • Thanks for the advice, all of you. FSICX had escaped my notice. Beats the bogey M* selected for it. Thanks, cman. Since FAIGX has 70% equity and costs 1.16%,, I'll just slump back in my rocking chair on the porch, Ted. (Or did you mean FAGIX?)
  • I checked out this post, hoping to learn something, but was disappointed. However, since pigs seem to enter the discussion, I felt it could be elevated by the Mark Twain or Robert Heinlein quote: "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your tim…
  • FWIW, M* ranks RNCOX at 45%tile for 1 yr and 50%tile for 3 yr against moderate allocation funds and 7.9% annual return for 3 yr, so I'm paying over 20% of the fund's return in expenses lately, if M* has the costs correct. It does rank MUCH better at…
  • While I believe this belongs in "Off topic", I admit that I do not equate HFT with Market Makers, since the HFTs do not intentionally accept losses as part of "doing business". Cman usually offers insightful comments, but he's become a bit opaque …
  • AWTDX is fairly costly, but at least it's no load. I selected it because TDA has no minimum in an IRA and I've dropped in a few pence now and then. Water seems to be a safe bet, until one looks back at 2008/9; and I think I recall Grantham picking t…
  • If I were a KO stockholder, and his percentages are correct, I'd be voting against the board (but then I usually do.) I see no point funding the indolence of their great-great-great-great-etc grandchildren. "Unfathomable" is a gentle adjective.
  • right, it's 60/40. Plagued by a balky "0"
  • VBINX with an ER of .24% and 60/4 stocks to bonds should do OK over the decades although it's pretty conservative for a 20-something. You're both right so long as the ER is low and enough stocks are included; and target date funds remove the anxiet…
  • I skimmed the prospectus far enough to get to the 5.75% load. Site has nice graphic design motif, not necessarily a good sign. I would expect the big dogs to get the profits from likely IPOs seeking "late stagefunding," whatever that is meant to in…
  • Sorry about Mark Few's boys, Crash. So far as I am concerned, anyone who beats UK (University - more of a junior college, really -of Kentucky) gets my support.

  • Given the choice of Fido and/or TIAA-CREF in my 403b, I opted for Fido ten years ago. Some of the Spartan funds seemed off-limits initially, but I think they are now available. Made some money in New Markets Income and quite a bit more in FBIOX, but…
  • Cute publicity stunt; but did they really buy insurance against a winner? While the quintillion to one odds are overstated, it's probably worse than 1 quadrillion to one, if they are limitng entries to 15 M. Must have been a small premium that would…
  • Rode 2008 down; didn't sell; rode it up. Most of my funds are on the same slope as pre 2008. That took 5 years; Willmatt72 has 15. At 5 yr pre-retirement MAXDD matters much more than at 15 yr. Bonds are risky now in the opinion of people smarter tha…
  • Willmatt72, these people are being entirely too nice. 40% bonds at age 49 with 15 years to retirement and GMO predicting negative returns against inflation for bonds? I'd need a lot of melatonin to sleep well. At least look at target maturity bond …
  • SYS, TNUH Save your synapses; there's nothing useful here
  • I think he was referring to school teachers' life-time earnings with benefits, and he has the moral high ground, of course. But I didn't think people who would make comments like this were allowed on any board outside of school boards. Must have snu…
  • cman, is the site you mention free? I get the distinct impression they are going to ask me for a credit card number in 14 days.
  • This site really needs a mechanism whereby one can comment on some inanity without bumping it to the top. I realize Bespoke has to create a column multiple times a week, but they must salivate for the next AAII news release. They seem determined to …
  • Despite the relatively enthusiastic MFO profile, the M* chart is underwhelming. It lacks the proof of protection against serious losses as in 2008 and it doesn't beat its comparator over LOF. The anointment seems premature. I realize one can't auto…
  • Looking at DODGX vs the S&P over the long term, it barely earns its very low ER (does better over selected shorter periods). Since it's the only D&C fund I own, I'll vote against as usual, be on the losing side as usual (has a board of direc…
  • Will probably wish I'd let more ride with Bruce as this plays out. If the gov't and taxpayers are now made whole plus, it's harder to see why investors who accepted risk aren't rewarded.
  • If so, he'll eventually be back, but the GP funds will probably have built up a lead by then. Sorry that I left off the B - that's $1.6B x 0.0189 = >$30M (every year!! Doubt he buys lottery tickets.) Could buy a lot of research. No wonder funds r…
  • There are mechanisms for ensuring that your spouse is not made destitute if you enter a nursing home. So far as YOU becoming destitute as a result of being in a nursing home, so far in my area and many areas, the taxpayers cover your costs if that o…
  • I held the fund for several years after its inception. Sold after sluggish performance less than a year ago when he appeared on CNN? promoting himself. He'd not reduced the high ER despite accumulating a large asset base. I did, however, buy Nestle …
  • VTWSX or VT the ETF - ER .35 or .18 makes up for hot managers over 40 years. Ask her to read one of William Bernstein's books on investing and discuss it with you. She can add some bond funds 10 or 15 years from retirement. She can add a mid or sma…
  • When I try to sign in, I get taken to a "Page not found" screen. This probably maintains the quality of the discussion board, so maybe it's all for the best. When I then click on discussions and the topic to which I wanted to add my invaluable insi…
  • This is getting pretty weird - are we in Austin yet?
  • I use TDA for my IRA and find it almost impossible to determine the cost of shares in a fund purchased at different times. The main page shows an updated cost based apparently on the last reinvested dividend. (So Seafarer always shows a loss.) If I …
  • I split TRBVX 50-50 in 1210 when TBCUX was offered. TBCUX has slightly outperformed acc. to M* and to my records. Not a great difference, but it all depends on your view of the dollar's strength.
  • After reading the Marketwatch post, I can only assume these guys recently returned from Colorado and brought some purchases along to maintain the mood. Recent MBAs with more modern techniques? GMAFB! When did you last invest with 3 new MBAs with a n…

  • A cited study reported on MFO discussions sometime this year, but more than ten pages back (I gave up at that point) modeled a portfolio that was low risk at retirement to avoid the impact of significant drawdowns, increasing risk as one aged. It ma…
  • Just for kicks, I checked their M* chart. Barely better than S&P at 5 yrs, but better at 10 yrs. Looks like they made a faster rebound from 2008 than the S&P did, providing some of their positive margin. Since their fund holdings met M*'s me…
