Is RNCOX worth holding?
After looking at the M* 1 and 3 year numbers on this fund with its ER of 2.22%, I wonder if it's time to give up on it. It was once recommended as a core holding, but I'm not sure it's worth its cost.
Is anyone holding it with confidence?
I'm guessing Vanguard doesn't lose money at the $3K minimum.
Others would probably make less than they want, but more than they need. Might not be a feeding frenzy, but there would be companies ready to deal and to offer frills that would add to pr…
Exactly, Cman. The percentage of the population who would benefit from the MyRA who read Mr Jaffe: uumm, 0.01%, maybe. The percentage who would benefit from the MyRA who now have a low minimum mutual fund with monthly deposits? Any guesses? I'm gues…
Expenses over 2%, since the cap isn't guaranteed; 3 years to recapture unreimbursed expenses. Can essentially buy or short anything that pays interest or dividends. Can use derivatives and similar instruments.
Might be the mother lode, for the mana…
After failing 3 times to post on this theme (wouldn't accept the post) , I'll just add the last line: Is it possible that a 50/50 combo of a floating rate loan fund and a high yield fund in the same fund family (for simplicity) would out-perform a m…
Agreed, MJG. Like where were the Indians going to invest their goods (and it was 64 guilders, perhaps worth more like $1000)? And there is the rumor the Indians were just passing though.
As to Saint John's allegation: I'm pretty sure he's correct;…
Addedum to Guy:
If you google the blue phrase and add "fund" after "star", you get the article and the link to the table. My problem with the table was that only US indexes were used, so far as I could tell, so it didn't show which international fun…
Short-sighted. Check out "The Old Dope Pedlar" on the benefits of free samples. At some point they are forced to convert to a mutual fund, as I read it.
"potatoe sack"? must have the Dan Quayle version of spell check.
I'm counting on AIG and BAC to cover the Sears losses. Hope the funds sold back some of their Sears stock in the $66 cash/share buy back" - one of the weaker arguments I've seen anyone…
While there might be 1 or 1.5 declines left, I'd assume "Cinnamond-friendly values" indicates indicates seriously oversold. Somewhere below that is "Buffett's making more preferred stock deals" suggesting the bottom is in sight. These are difficult…
OK, Charles, I think I give up. I tried to review my monthly reports from TDA on-line and found my original investment in 2012 of $7.5K. My "gain/loss" report on TDA is negative a few cents a share, which I thought represented my historical investme…
I thought this was one of the better commentaries and quite tightly written.
Only quibble is that I couldn't understand the 7.1% 1 yr gain for ARIVX. TDA says my gain over the past 2 - 3 yr is 0.3 total.
While not a quibble, I've always thought tha…
More time? Is 10 years enough?
I can't do the graph thing, but looking at VWELX vs PAUIX (cheating, perhaps, but I think it's about 60/40 in the first "two legs"), I get 7.85%vs 6.55% return and you rent them for 0.26% vs 1.23%.
Arnott's Q&A s…
This comment may be the kiss of death for FBIOX, in which I've been fairly heavily invested since Fido is one of the few families in my 403b, but it has done pretty well, and I think biotech is a bit better protected from political decisions in heal…
I'm guessin' students enroll despite the songs, or do you just send them out hoping to divert the ueber-dorks? (can't figure out how to do an umlaut)
Of course, my uni has "gloriana frangipana" in a line, words I can only assume were chosen because …
Thanks, Crash, for reminding us that taxes are the price we pay for living in (we hope) a civilized society. Maybe we don't want to pay for it to be quite THAT civilized at times, but those who are truly unhappy can emigrate, renounce their citizens…
Those using crystal balls to predict the future often eat ground glass. (But then I had to look up the source.)
Fiedler's Forecasting Rules (Business 101):
1. It is very difficult to forecast, especially about the future.
2. He who lives by the…
Made the mistake of reading something with "Warren Bufett" (yes, I know it's Buffett - should have been a tip-off) in the title. It's boilerplate about the risk of leveraged EFTs. Don't waste your time reading it.
Wellll, seemed a bit boilerplate to me, but I think he said something like:"Buy the unloved' (cheaply); "don't chase performance"; "buy indexes if you don't have time and passion to do research"; and then he gave fairly standard advice for research …
Of course, you're right, Ted; but it is fun to chase the dream of the manager who reliably beats the market.
If my grandchild arrives mentally and physically intact, her/his welcoming gift goes into index funds, probably slanted globally with a valu…
Farmland is now selling for $10,000/acre in mid-northern Indiana, where I grew up. Cash rent ranges from $250 to perhaps $400/acre (My bro pays me less, but we bought the land at about $3300/a, so it's ok) Property taxes take about 10% of what he pa…
If M*'s graphs are accurate, none of the large caps protected during 2008 drop, but at least they didn't lag the S&P on the rise. If these are the best large caps funds over time, the graphs seem to validate the argument for index funds for the …
Presume those leaving Doubleline were more certain of their predictive ability than I am. A positive bond fund last year is great, if one believes in rebalancing stocks and bonds to a fixed ratio.
"Index fund beats 49% of actively managed funds over one year" isn't a news flash, especially in small caps where a manager should make a difference (hopefully one significantly greater than the funds ER).
In small caps (actually in any cap), I wan…
"Old too soon; smart too late." (Benj. Franklin) pretty much sums up my investment career. If you understand what these people are trying to do, you might review the M* summary, which implies they aren't doing too well against their comparators (Spe…
Xeriscape, bow before Dr. Carrier's picture occasionally, flush less (shower with friends??), buy land in southern Oregon (coastal, not inland; it's already dry) for your heirs. It's global warming, baby (I'm channeling Dick Vitale).
I know my aging…
I'll join the approbationary chorus (over in the corner, off pitch, probably a little too loud).
Now, the burning question: Does the first 2014 Commentary post at 12:01 CST, or way too much later?
I have a smidgen of RGHVX and I can't imagine why ANYONE would want to be like Bill Belicheat, although the "end justifies the means" crowd probably idolizes him, but he stole his first Superbowl victory by illegal means and paid a very low price, u…
At first I just thought Fido was reaching for another star (a M*, that is) to bump the fund above its 3-star rating, but the YTD percentile rank of the reliever is 51 vs 54 for the departing pitcher. (The dividend growth fund reportedly slightly exc…
This thread needs to calm down or close. There are unnecessarily hurtful comments that are a bit embarrassing to read. Do you really think you will want to have people consider these in their evaluation of your probity in three months?
No matter wh…
Sorry, Charles, but health care generally is a zero sum game. When stockholders gain, policyholders or patients lose. I hear emerging markets might be due for for some (long-term) gains. (At least that's where the world tilts - they do have the youn…
Since I pay my acounts off monthly, unless they have some special no interest offer, I have used a debit card only when it was necessary on a trip to Africa (and I was nervous about that). The protections against abuse are insufficient.
If one can't…
Perhaps.
But when has SEC student football game attendance had ANY relevance to finacial gains?? Introducing such comments cheapens the article.
A recent post said breadth was shrinking. although the last two days have looked pretty good. Guess we'…
I'm in favor of sewers and connector lines. They serve a major public health need.
I'm in favor of hospices run by charitable organizations. I don't think people "hate" them, although they do hate the diseases that require them. BUT, when there are…
