Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
I use etfs in reits and consumer staples, utility funds, a bit of small cap intl to balance out the core funds and stocks in portfolio. On occasion they can all go down in sync, but most of the time when my domestic large cap and international are …
From Morningstar's "parent pillar" of ARTGX 1/29/15:
"On a more positive note, all but two of the Artisan funds have at least one manager with more than $1 million invested in fund shares and eight have at least two managers who invest that heavily…
Judging by many of the posts on MFO, investors seem to be going in and out of the market when it seems to top and when its on a temporary downward spiral. I will be the first to admit I trade my stocks (10%) of portfolio taking profits or limiting …
Conversion being done today on a portion of my regular IRA to Roth, using the funds that have gone down the most since their highs, FBTIX, TMLPX and HIEMX. It is transferring in kind, so no cashing out and trying to figure out when to buy in. In h…
Here is my $.02. What we need is for Aaron Sorkin to write us a new president. None of them seem all that suited to lead the country, so let him create one for us. West Wing, American President seem to have good ones :)
Ironic that my two least bad today were my emerging market funds, HIEMX down just .11% and MINDX actually up 1.55% (my only green of the day.) MINDX seems to have a negative correlation with the rest of my funds.
I have always considered Bob C the E.F. Hutton of the board. When he talks, people listen. He is always the voice of reason in a sometimes unreasonable market :)
@Art,
I have 12% international, 1/3 of which is considered emerging market. I sold off ODMAX and ABEMX in favor of HIEMX earlier this year. It tends to be less volatile than the other two, has limited access to new investments, but was able to g…
Wow- this is from the way back machine for me. Owned it in the late 90s early 2000s, sold when it had a major sputter. Did not again invest in intl small caps til 2013 when I added OSMYX. Much better and consistent. It has been mentioned before,…
Some additional info on Roth regarding amounts less than 5 years from Schwab :
If you take a distribution of Roth IRA earnings before you reach age 59½ and before the account is five years old, the earnings may be subject to taxes and penalties. Y…
Thanks everyone for your excellent input. Because my taxable income is relatively low due to the muni bonds and taking living expenses from cash and bonds right now it seems the opportune time to explore it. I already have a roth that is the larg…
I stopped using stop loss orders also, over the past 3 years used them and got stopped out on about 5 stocks to protect profits only see them go right back up. That won't always be the case, but feel this way is better. I do like limit orders thou…
@old_skeet: I am having the same problems with my Prudential Jennison Health Sciences Fund (PHSZX) . Their site says the problem is from a third party vendor. Just for the record Hawleyl, not all load fund families charge a load. I have the Z sh…
@mark: thanks for selling BX, its up over 6% today. Its one that I hold and has done pretty well as you noted. This usually happens when I sell a stock too. Sell it goes up buy it goes down, part of the crazy world of individual stocks. This is a r…
I too was on vacation and came back to a slightly different portfolio. In the two weeks, of my etfs, VNQ lost the least, funds FRUAX and MMUIX (utilities)and surprisingly OSMYX my small cap intl. Of my stocks, Southwest Ar (LUV) only was down 2% …
I paired the equal weighted RHS with XLY, cap weighted and they seem to work well together. Its likely notfor everyone, but it seems to work for me. As ive said before, I like when one zigs and the other zags and they dont all do the same thing.
Hope this is not a top for OSMYX , institutional version of OSMAX but decided to add to it today. Its my best ytd fund. Put it into my roth which has the most aggressive funds, will be tapped last.
Whenever I see posts or articles discusing returns from the opening of a fund or stock to the present time which show outstanding returns I have to smile. Sure, there are some that have held the same investnents for decades, but the vast portion bel…
I am very pleased to have owned PJP since early 2013 as 1/3 of my healthcare allocation in portfolio. I have one pure biotech fund FBTIX and a broad base healthcare fund PHSZX that owns biotech, medical devices, pharma and various companies that …
@Crash: You might want to consider pairing MSCFX if you still own it with a small cap international fund, at times they run in opposite cycles, as one zigs the other zags. Small caps funds are the most frustrating to watch, I agree, but I would not…
@Jerry: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/shed-no-tears-for-departed-funds-2009-12-27
It finally died, but not without tears of fears and years of tears.
I added HDPSX about a year ago, holds less than 100 stocks. Although it has grown to $2B in assets, still has 75% in microcap and small cap stocks. Can be volatile, as many small cap funds are, with higher than average standard deviation, but its …
@scott: I bought Sketchers as my Peter Lynch "buy what you know" stock. I had bought a couple of pairs, kept seeing them on other people and when they kept running out of what I wanted, bought the stock. I just did not think it would run this hig…
I think its a very individual decision, but lost my husband to lung cancer, which was discovered at N stage. He wanted chemo thinking it could extend life and give us more time, it did not. He was not sorry he tried however, he came from a medica…
Sold half of my position in United Technologies (UTX), exchanged it for Boeing (BA), rest keeping as cash. Also started a position in Southwest (LUV). Heck I fly it almost exclusively, might as well own it :)
JoJo, I believe many of them were analysts and research staff. Wasatch was always very team focused, gathering some of the best ideas from the group; part of which left for Grandeur. The managers are now the founder and his son. I am sure WAGTX w…
Just took a peek at the 6/30/15 top holdings for the fund, it looks dramatically different than the previous quarter.

The annual report should be out shortly, shoul…
I hold it too, I am going to give it time, considering its record prior to this year. I was in WAGTX and it had become inconsistent, primarily on the fact that so many managing the fund had abandoned ship in 2012 to go over to Grandeur Park and I fe…
@hank. Your comment on the tomatoes reminds me of the 1973 film Soylent Green where I think one went for $250. Actually over the years my attempt at growing tomatoes in my back yard is similar. After buying the plants, the best soil, the mulch, pla…
Got rid of a slug of GLD about 18 months ago that I inherited 30 months ago. Lost 20% in value in those intervening months, have made it up since then in various small cap stocks, but it wasn't easy. Recently also sold some gold coins; they kept g…
It seems that there is no set aum standard for having advisory help, you have to find what works best for you and research the person that will be advising if that is the route you decide to take. When I inherited a portfolio almost three years ago,…
