The contrarian fund I have is Columbia Contrarian Core SMGIX, and is one of my core funds. It took the place of UMBIX which I owned for many years, but left once David Williams retired. M* reported that UMBIX, now a Columbia fund may merge into SM…
I like and use ETFs, have eight of them: DTN, DVY, PJP, PKW, RHS, VIG, VNQ and XLP along with my 15 funds and 13 stocks which represent 63% of my portfolio I did recently sell EEM and put the proceeds into my two emerging market funds ODVYX an…

I used to call him Ralph Makem poorer, he has been gone quite a while from CNBC, I guess they need to drag some old wood out of the pile now and then. Haven't heard opinions lately from Abby Joseph Cohen, another one Rukeyser love…
I remember the Steadman Funds, as others may, which finally died a horrible death, way past the point at which they should have. But there were some investors that held on despite a 23% expense ratio and negative 20 year averages. So much for buy …

You are certainly braver/more aggresive than me in regards to foreign, especially emerging. My allocation to international, including emerging is 12% of total. Split evenly between developed/emerging. That does not count foreign …

I have global fund exposure in ARTGX and WAGTX, but I don't consider them for my foreign exposure, since both of them usually have 40% -60% in US most of the time. I also like having funds that have that flexibility.
I just took a bit off the table in emerging market funds ABEMX and ODVYX and traded it for additional OAKIX which I recently added. Not leaving emerging markets, as these two funds are excellent, just lightening up in favor of developed countries. …
Ted, seems that all of them forgot how a fund does in a bear market or maximum drawdown as one of their factors in evaluating a fund, but otherwise very helpful info. Thanks for posting it.

I was closed out of Virtus too, by one day, so ABEMX was second choice, but it is a good choice, and seems to complement my other emerging market fund o which it doing a bit better. Im sure it will have its turn, Don't …

I have never done any regional funds with the exception of PRESX and a Driehaus fund years ago. In 2008-2009 got out of foreign altogether. Went back in December of 2012. Always was aware of Matthews and what a good fund s…
Did some realigning in my foreign exposure today. I had EEM, ABEMX and ODVYX, all emerging markets. Determined that EEM was not only underperforming the managed funds but added no real benefit. I sold EEM and bought some OAKIX, which has ramped u…

I recently added ISTIX as my tech exposure, it is replacing IYW which seemed to vastly underperform the mananged funds. I like how it has not only tech stocks, but other companies that utilize tech to a high degree.

Thanks Max, I had forgotten about Tweedy Browne, an old name I had not heard in a while.
In the 90s had some international funds that were not emerging countries, if I remember correctly, had T Rowe Price International, Jan…
I opened a position in Powershares Dynamic Portfolio - PJP about 6 weeks ago, I watched it go up for almost a year, waiting for a pullback that never materialized. It's now up 35% ytd. I wanted to add a pure play on large pharma to my portfolio, t…
Mona,
I know you wanted more large cap, but another option might be RSP, which is the Guggenheim Equal Weight S + P 500 ETF. Its a different approach. I have RHS, the equal weighted Consumer Staples ETF which I bought at the same time as XLP, and…
HRUX,
I might as well throw my $.02 in too. Given that you are over 20 years from retirement, I would be less concerned on the income side and downside capture, unless you simply cannot stand to watch the gyrations. There are many good funds out …
Put a limit order on Ford, might hit today. Looking at Linclon Electric (LECO), been watching it for a while, I remember it well when I lived in Cleveland back in the 70s and 80s, always a well run company, but would like it to go a bit lower yet.…
On dip, looking to buy Ford, Home Depot, IBM and will add to SMGIX, MMM. Recently added to UTX, PKW (now my largeset and fav etf).
Recently sold ABV- Scott, would be interested in WHAT YOU SEE, perhaps Im missing something, its very volatile a…

Im about 20% in mutual funds, about 12% in ETFS, 20% stocks, 8% cash and 40% bonds (all munis), so I do have stop losses on about half of my stocks and etfs, which has protected my downside this year. You may want to consider e…
Cathy G,
I certainly understand your feeling that diversification isn't all its cracked up to be, but I retooled my portfolio this year into what I felt was a more diversified portfolio. I inherited additonal funds, and felt it needed tweeking. An…
Did sell my position in AEP (American Electric Power) after seeing a 21% rise since December 13 and traded NLY for more of IYR, which is more diversified. The only thing I bought was an opening position in Costco. I will dollar cost average the res…
Exchanging FSPHX for PHSZX Wednesday am. Inherited Fidelity fund, and agreed to watch it and hold it for a while. There isn't much crossover in stocks, but I do hold three health care stocks, plus FBTIX. I have a tendency to hold more funds than…
I did not mean to give the impression I was looking to sell these bonds, I will beholding them as long as I can. Just wondered if bonds may have bottomed enough to stick toe in. I do have a low duration bond fund for some of my cash. Thanks for th…

Thanks Andy, I inherited the muni bonds, so this is my first experience with them. I always held bond funds before, but have all my bond exposure in individual muni bonds now. When they have first call date in 2016 I will be scr…
On 4/4 sold 50% of my position in MCD, had some very nice profits. It started representing too high % of one portfolio. Also sold INTC. Reinvested those proceeds 4/5 in additions to WAGTX, PKW, IYW and started a position in UTX. Also added to PHSZ…
I actually ended up buying one, SMGIX, that I had not heard of before I started using an advisor, who liked the fund's drawdown history, especially in 2008. Since I had sold UMBIX when David Williams retired, and was looking for a replacement, I …
Today I doubled the amount I had been dcaing into SMGIX, since I was still rather heavy in cash from the sale of a couple of stocks ( of course they had dramatic rises right after I sold, that ALWAYS seems to happen, one was NIKE, the other FDO) an…
Sold my position in Family Dollar, it hit my stop. Adding to my exisiting funds as market drops a bit more , especially PKW (a stock buyback ETF), FBTIX, PHSZX, WAGTX, SMGIX
I'm about 50/50 right now, waiting for pullbacks to add, since I shaved some profits in a few stocks, and Im 16% cash. I can wait. The funds I will be adding to will be SMGIX, FBTIX, PHSZX, WAGTX, along with a few stocks that I already own that I…
GLD 6.3%
VDIGX 6.1%
OYEIX 5.9%
Actually my largest holding is cash at 15,4% as I recently took profits in some stocks and waiting to deploy some of it into funds. Im about 56% stocks to 26% funds in retirement accounts, which will be closer to 56/…
