Lynn,
Thank you so much. I am planning on a 3-year ladder since I am a year away from retirement. Lots of spreadsheet work to calculate the income replacement needed. This ladder will create a steady income stream. So thank you for all your help.
I moved back to high quality bond funds this year. Some of which you covered in the SA article. For now, I will stay with agency bonds to the bond ladder. I will pick active managers for corporate bonds.

@bee, thank you for the detail posting. Got my homework for the weekend. Is M* portfolio manager is still available at T. Rowe Price? Lately the Portfolio X-ray tool is only available when the total asset exceed $50K.
I was just debating fixing up the old reliable 13-year old GMC pickup for somewhere between $3,000 and $5,000 or buying a brand new one. Took a look. Sticker prices of $40,000 - $80,000 convinced me to fix up the old one. (What inflation?)
That is t…
Agree that is too narrowly focus since many tech companies are developing their own AI chipsets.

As I recalled, it was initially managed by Amit Wadhwaney. My impression at the time it was a so so value oriented fund. There were better choices back then. The Third Avenue funds started to lag badly after Marty Whitman sold his company. This …
Stay with Andrew Foster who has long proven track record in EM at Matthews and Seafarer. Swing in and out of EM is not investing- one has to get it "right" twice. How many active manager can do that well?
@Starchild,
I live in NJ, so don't know the tax bracket situation
When you file your tax return this year, your adjusted gross income tells you which tax bracket you are in. NJ is one of high tax state of the northwest region of the county that in…
@Crash,
Don't forget Washington which is a equally good state for raising a family. Often we get many California retirees migrating north as the cost of living of CA is getting too much for them.
We live in Oregon which is a high income tax state. Yes we pay high income tax and property tax, but we get a lot in return from the state. Outdoor activities (miles of beautiful beaches) and public events at the universities are readily available …
@Starchild,
The institutional share, PIMIX, (ER 0.50%) is available at Vanguard brokerage with a $20 transaction fee. The investment minimum is $25K, not $1M as in other brokerages. You can buy more for $2 transaction fee with two consecutive tr…
Now throw in a typical 1% fee for an adviser and another 1% for the mutual funds he buys for you and run those numbers again.
Magically, your total return over the two decades falls to $327,103 — a decline of 33.2%! Your adviser has cost you $162,8…
I switched from Pimco Total Return to PIMIX awhile back. It is not likely Ivascyn is running short ideas to invest, but he is facing headwind of several more rate hikes. According to M*, PIMIX is already has a duration of intermediate term bonds. …
That is for sure. FB is making money off your personal data without consent and consequences. A composite profile (sounds like FBI) can be created based on your comments, shopping habit, friends, travel preference and political view with surprisin…
There is something to be said about you get what you pay for. I hardy hear any praise consistently with TD Ameritrade. We use TD Waterhouse long time ago before it merged with Ameritrade. Ever since we use Vanguard and Fidelity as our main brokera…
Today's testimony is interesting to say the least. He is more interested in protecting his own privacy. Steve Wozniak said it all when he deleted his FB account.
How did you place the order? If by phone, you should received a confirmation number and the transaction is recorded. If done online, you should received a confirmation statement right away.
I followed AVALX portfolio for awhile. It tends to hold large slug of cash in excess of 40%. Sometime cash goes up even higher. I tend to follow asset allocation funds with flexible mandates. One example is PRWCX that would let the cash builds u…
@LewisBraham, you brought back challenging times. Certainly learned my lessons in both bear markets. Most important thing was not to sell in those period and remind myself that investment is for the long term. Several years later everything recov…
@MikeM, Time like today is to re-evaluate your risk tolerance and your asset allocation. Only you know yourself. Previous bear markets in 1987, 2000-2002, and 2008 should remind every investors the outcomes and how they can plan accordingly. By na…

@MikeM, No catalyst on whatsoever to buy now. I rebalanced out of equity in December and again in January as market moved up without convincing reasons. Aa a consequence I am at the highest % of cash & bonds for the last 20 years - because I …
I have been invested with Vanguard Global Min Volatility fund since inception. Performance has been solid but lagged a bit last year and that is okay. Through the volatile ups and downs this year, this fund held up well especially in down cycles.

Agree on trading volume consideration, especially in days like today. The Vanguard ETFs are posted only on their institutional investors site, strange.
What makes Fidelity Total Bond unique to has beaten the Bloomberg Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index by one percentage point annually over the past 10 years?

@bee, what if you has no option in your pension plan other than an annuity? Taking a lump sum is often calculated a reduced value. I still has 10-15 years to go.
I agree with Andy J on David Giroux's thesis on utilities while FANG stocks have dominated the limelight, especially Facebook. He has done well this volatile year and leading the asset allocation funds. The cash position has decreased to a single d…
