Lynn,
Thank you so much. I am planning on a 3-year ladder since I am a year away from retirement. Lots of spreadsheet work to calculate the income replacement needed. This ladder will create a steady income stream. So thank you for all your help.
I moved back to high quality bond funds this year. Some of which you covered in the SA article. For now, I will stay with agency bonds to the bond ladder. I will pick active managers for corporate bonds.

Vanguard have both the institutional and investor shares, but the institutional shares require transactional fees. For certain investors such as Voyager with greater than $1M, Vanguard would offer 20 free trades on Tranaction-fee mutual funds per …
Good to hear that T. Rowe Price is getting competitive on their brokerage offering. Also many of their mutual funds (investor shares) are on no-transaction fee platform at Fidelity and Vanguard. The institutional shares, however, require transacti…
Trading stocks are free these days at large brokerages including Fidelity, Schwab and Vanguard. In my experience Fidelity is preferred since their online trading is most robust and reliable.
What happen when no one wants to buy the new treasuries due to the low yields?
European and Japanese government debts are yielding even lower, often with negative yields.
The fund has morphed into an all-cap global fund awhile back as the asset grew. In its early days back in the 90's it was categorized as a small cap value fund.
I used it awhile back but the rapid growth slowed its performance.
@AndyJ, read several discussion that the 10 years treasury yield will reach 2% by year end. Not sure about holding too much lower quality or junk bonds while trading off the negative correlation to stocks. One can shift some of the bonds to dividen…
The 10 year treasury yield moved up 1.73% yesterday. Many bond funds are red for the year. https://treasury.gov/resource-center/data-chart-center/interest-rates/Pages/TextView.aspx?data=yield

The world of furniture business have changed considerably in the past 30 years. US is no longer the leading manufacturer for domestic consumption. Michigan and Carolinas states were the main producers due the abundance of hardwoods. Many furnitures…
@hank, we use IKEA for many of our furniture. Price point is very competitive comparing to traditional furniture stores. Also we like the modern clean lines of European design. Your style may differ. Several years ago, we helped a friend to remod…
Thank you for posting this episode.
At the conclusion of this show, the host mentioned the next one will interviewing Matt McLennan who manages First Eagle Global fund. He will be talking about buying gold. Why now?
I often wonder whether factor-based funds are really better than allocation funds. I tried them several years ago but they were eliminated in favor of active managed allocation funds.
@Mark, no problem. Your friends are so lucky doing that. Next time we will tour Europe by rail and boat as we are nearly empty nesters. Years ago I car camp all over the Banff and Jasper National Parks. What a beautiful part of country!
@msf, I really appreciate that you took the time to explain the of James Anderson of Baillie Gifford. He has done well for VWIGX when the growth stocks were in favor, but several scenarios may unfold after his retirement. For now I will stay put un…
Interesting that Baillie Gifford also manages Harbor International Growth fund, HAIGX, with a different management team. None of the three managers used in Vanguard are used in Harbor fund. The top 10 holdings are also different and without the hi…
Count ourselves the lucky ones who received the vaccines. Now we have three FDA approved vaccines, the challenge is to deliver them to the 340 million American. Rather than letting each state to fight for their vaccines, Biden has enlisted FEMA to…
@bee, thank you for the timely posting of this interview. I have rotated my allocation to more value oriented funds and ETFs late last year. This interview explains the global recovery and investment opportunities you listed above.
@catch22, I had Moderna vaccine and had some soreness on my arm within the first 24 hours. No other effect you described. Now I am working in the garden feeling fine. All the precautions we have taken in the last 13 months have paid off. As a coun…
I read the book "Jungle" in high school and came to appreciate the meat packer's hard lives withouut unionized labor. Also think about the sweat shop oversea where they produce cheap clothing for the developed countries. Can't imagine if their worki…
This spilled over to Europe and Asia as well. Europe is facing slow vaccination and rising COVID cases. Paris is considering another lockdown. No overseas travel for us until next year even after our family is vaccinated.
This is a constant challenge for active management business. Having too much cash is a drag on performance and may result in lossing investors. Not having enough cash on hand may miss buying opportunities when bear market present themselves. Few ma…
Not really. I made the mistake to invest with them briefly and left. Most likely the AUM has became smaller as investors realized there is nothing unique with this fund.
@Old_Joe, I believe it was your posting on Heather that got me interested in the first place. Her writing are so informative on complex subjects. I too been a big fan of Bill Moyer on PBS. I believe he is retired now.
Several years ago it was @msf who brought the difference to my attention.
