Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
Dex - Then maybe it's the luck factor. Bruce has, like many other bar room singers, put in the time and paid his dues. Why him? Why has he succeeded when so many others, putting in similar efforts, have never made a pittance of the career out of the…
@Maurice - no problem using TT when filing a k-1 on an LLP in a regular (taxable) account. In many cases one can even import the k-1 data into TT directly from the proper websites.
If I may, the correct song title is "Further On (Up the Road)". Something we may wholeheartedly agree on is that Springsteen just rocks. Truly a master at his craft.
@ Catch & John - I found the list of Googled articles to have some fairly misleading titles. However, once one starts reading the articles the truth starts to surface. The only tax issue to holding an MLP in an IRA account has to do with UBTI or…
Indeed, guru designation is often placed upon those who just happen to get it right more often than wrong. Guru's come and guru's go.
However if you had bothered to read the article you would have learned that Mr. Eisenstadt is the former research …
That is the key to all successful market trading - getting it right more often than wrong. All traders, (even you tb) will get it wrong from time to time. The best traders are better at minimizing their losses.

@TSP - and one more from the Governor of Kentucky "Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear's administration is arguing the state's ban on same-sex marriage isn't discriminatory because it applies to straight people, too."

linter, my style isn't for everyone but I can tell you that when I started the conversion I held close to 30 mutual funds. I was not impressed by the OEF returns I was getting and I was pretty convinced that a lot of it had to do with my own stupid …
linter - how big a position do I take in an individual stock, that's a good question. I am for all intent and purpose an income investor so my position size tends to run in the 3-5% range. Like Mr. Buffett, I buy with the intent of holding forever u…
@Ted - I'm guessing that you're hoping to receive enough dividend payments to cover the premium paid for shares over the liquidation value. Wish I had your millions.
Angie's List perhaps. Sometimes if you are on good terms with a respected CPA, if they don't know the answer or aren't sure, they will refer you to someone in the know. At least the good ones will. As a last resort you might take your question to th…
@Junkster - re: PRPFX
I've never owned that fund. I've looked at it once or twice but never got it, 'it' being why I would own this. However, if the markets were to experience another 2008-like dumping it might be the one everyone wished they had ch…
Thanks linter, I learned a new word. And as Scott said, funny too. Now I need to know what is a spiff called when there is no good performance? I'm hoping that we can just go with 'splat.' However, no one ever talks about those.
@Ted - re: new members, probably no more or less than any of the u-tube video's posted to the site.
I am not a marketing or advertising type but possibly the use of color on a page seems warmer, engaging or embracing to some folks causing them to s…
Not much. Looking at PM & more GILD in the considering area. Bought DTV in the new area because I've decided to take a position in stodgy old AT&T for my kids to play with after I am gone. Yes satellite TV might be heading for the dustbins e…
Supposedly the other side of the argument (to the SA article) for those who are interested.

One has to wonder if the potential rewards to FAIRX from winning the Fannie Mae…
Most astute MFO readers would not compare high yield bond funds against intermediate core bond funds. Not being astute myself I don't even own any bond funds. Oh wait, I bought some PTY the other day. That moment of madness will probably last just lo…
davfor, fwiw I've held FCNTX since the late 70's and I don't recall myself ever being tempted to swap it out for a LC index fund of any sort. Sometimes in investing it's just a matter of choosing what you are the most comfortable with and ignoring t…
The author works for Raymond James. Can you say "possible conflict of interest" because nothing he wrote in the article had me pumping my fists in the air.
@Scott - almost took a toehold at the closing but since it's almost the end of the month (or quarter) and fund managers are playing games with positions and holdings I'm going to let that shake itself off first. GILD has definitely been on the radar…
Correct symbol is FCX and it didn't look as though the announcement affected the stock price a whole lot. I believe that the potential for these type of announcements are already baked into the prices of energy and commodity stocks. Witness XOM and …
Possibly my biggest bomb, I recieved shares of Chipotle when it was spun off from McDonalds way back. Thinking, what am I supposed to do with a dozen shares of another burrito joint I sold them a couple of days later. What are they over $600 somethi…
@PRESSmUP - Truly I'm not trying to be flippant when I say turn off the media. They have to write and say something and they might no less than you in this case. Mr. Price will tell you when to back off.
Sorry Ted, just trying to keep the facts straight. I wasn't the guy sitting next to you, I'm my own breed of A-hole. Thank you for correcting/editing your earlier post.
Interesting article. Being a dividend income investor I don't own a lot of funds but some of those mentioned in the article employ interesting strategies worth looking into. I had jotted down HEDJ for example but now that it's been named ETF of the …
Geez, with all these patterns and Hindenburg omen's and a monkey sitting on a rock I just don't know what or who to believe anymore. Think I'll stick with Mr. Price.
Catch - the pictures tell the story better than any words I could say and I would love to see and hike the country w/o looking through the scope of my M-16 or twin 50-cal's. Besides I only rode rivers before, time to dock the boat. If I was going to…
