Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
@msf - there are no brick and mortar branches in my location. Your link just takes me to the online capabilities I already use But I was intrigued.
I know that I can do better (1.0%) at Synchrony and Ally for example if I choose to deal with openin…
About those oil/energy stocks - I recently read an article in RollingStone magazine about institutions divesting themselves from same. Maybe that's why Warren Buffett did the same. Anyway, if you'd like to read it for yourselves:

Good timing. I'll have to look into BPY although I am sort of full up on REIT's. Added to AMTG and STWD during the morning slump and off loaded a couple of energy stocks where I am grossly overweight at the height of the afternoon liftoff. HASI is t…
Working off the words of the Dalai Lama who said "There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow..." the best you can do is deal with what Mr. Price hands you today.
Scott, you know we're in agreement. My buy's this morning were before she spoke and only to take advantage of adding to my current positions at sale prices.
I imagine that any bond type mutual fund pays a monthly dividend. If you want to explore ETF's that do you can start with the link below although they are not listed or sorted in terms of frequency. If you choose to be a subscriber ($5 for first mon…
Correct MJG. I believe comprehension of the referenced article fell off the cliff probably right at the end of the 2nd paragraph. Persistency was the key word but who's keeping track.
Same here Scott but I am not a big fan of the connected car. Maybe it's just me but I don't see how having/using/relying on that screen is any less distracting to drivers then talking or texting on a smart phone is. Maybe even more so since it's nea…
@Slick and MJG
Count me in the Peter Lynch Fan club. As the manager of the Magellan fund he consistently beat the market for almost twenty years. That's hardly fly-by-night coincidence but whether you believe in that viewpoint or not the recommenda…
Maurice, I get your point(s) loud and clear and I am well aware of how news programs are produced. However, I'm not sure that you get mine, and to be clear I have no dog in the LL fight.
Up to this point LL has been thrown under the bus. In the cou…
Silly me Maurice. I've always thought that's something that should be done before you eviscerate a defendant in front of a national audience you know, innocent until proven guilty and all like that except in matters relating to the IRS. My bad.
To be somewhat fair there still appears to be a number of unknowns in this matter:
- why LL claims the 60-minutes test for formaldehyde levels is the wrong test
- whether or not LL knew of the high levels or was the compound just snuck in similar to…

Not sure if this belonged with Ms. Meyer's or Mr. Ritholtz's article but you gotta love it:
"Please use the comments to demonstrate your own ignorance, unfamiliarity with empirical data and lack of respect for scientific knowledge. Be sure to creat…
@Bee - one report I read with respect to the AIG position is that between the stock + the warrants he doesn't want the issue to get to far beyond a 50% holding in the fund. FWIW that could have been the writer's/analyst's best guess.
So if I've got this right, what used to be accounts: savings, checking & possibly brokerage became buckets. Somewhere along the line these buckets transformed or evolved into sleeves. What's next, fingers?, knuckles?, something else?
Frankly al…
@JC - the report noted that Whitney Tilson, hedge fund manager, had a short interest in the stock. He had roughly 30-60 sec worth of exposure stating that he was concerned about the huge increase in their profit margins.
Seriously? Now one can just buy that honor huh? Who knew.
Look, Jack Bogle had a good idea setting up a house of index funds for the masses. No question that it's been instrumental in helping a number of individuals on their way toward 'financial' …
Scott, I am a long term holder of CHSCO, the gift that puts a smile on my face 4x a year. CHSCL was just a natural follow on. As for Billiton, I went with BBL.
Well since we last spoke I sold my position in COP (will wait for a better tape), swapped PEO for FENY (still believe in the premise), added to CHSCL, bought BHP Billiton ADR as a commodity play/addition and swapped OAK for BX which has better numbe…
@Charles - Valley Vista Enterprises offers one a complete guide to investing in mutual funds. They (it) sponsor a website offering "Everything You Need to Know to be Successful at Investing in Mutual Funds." I neither trusted or verified, you're on …
It was reported in the past that Hugh Hefner drank somewhere between 12-24 bottles of Pepsi per day back when they were sold in 16-oz bottles. Ah, the good old days.
Tough choice between these two diets.
@Ted - why or what gives you confidence that the latest distribution will remain stable for the next 3 quarters (or next 3 dividend payments)? I'd like to believe it but past ditributions have been erratic at best.
My approach to speculative positions is:
I tune out everything but the 'price' action. As long as it is positive then I hold with a trailing stop.
Sometimes, depending on the issue, I might withdraw my original investment and let the rest ride.
