PBKCM,
Welcome to MFO, appreciate your participation and unique perspective. I've been investing in mutual funds since probably 1982 (19 years old).
What all goes into determining position size of an investment in your mutual fund?
Thank you!
Surprised for lack of mention of Parwx. Three year AR 14.5%, SD 11.7, Shape Ratio 1.24, Sortino 2.54. Five year results slightly better.
True. Parnassus is not necessarily a top known fund shop, their socially conscious investment style may be a tu…
I have been a concentrated investor for most of my life. The most funds we have ever held at a time is 8...currently, only 4.
1) PRWCX - 61.7%
2) PONDX - 15.7%
3) GPROX - 15.3%
Normally I think, high PE Ratio funds are associated with high volatility and risk, but POGSX has a PE of 16.83, 2 points less than it's benchmark and 1.5 points less than it's category average according to M*.
My point was not that a particular index mutual fund should outperform the market...I was strictly comparing TRP index mutual funds to their nearest Vanguard counterpart.
The VG index mutual funds have lower expense ratios than their TRP counterpa…
Nearly 2/3 of our investments are in TRP funds. Never owned an index fund either...not saying never, but no one has ever been able to show me a realistic 60/40 allocation of index funds that can stand up to PRWCX, and until that happens...index fund…
Okay, read this article in our local Sunday paper and similar articles in the past...and I tend to agree.
After subtracting our total payroll deductions, mortgage, IRA contributions and a student loan payment, we are left with 46.3% of our gross in…
10 years ago I decided to simplify, for several reasons, by moving our investments from a handful of mutual fund companies and 10 mutual funds to 1 mutual fund company and largely 1 fund, a moderate allocation fund (PRWCX). Very simple and easy to m…
Don't mean this to sound the way it might, but why did they not save for retirement? I mean, what do they say now by way of retrospective analysis? Because they knew they had this sort of security? Needing to spend on kids etc.?
David,
Most of my …
My wife's parents are a perfect example related to this article...they are 87 & 85 years old and never accumulated much of any cash savings during their working lifetimes...I mean none. Her father worked as a teacher until he retired at 65 and w…
A couple of micro cap funds that I have been watching are wamvx and dmcrx which I can get through TDA without fees. All of our small cap exposure was transferred to gprox before it hard closed...so, eventually we will need an alternative to add fund…
Best wishes to all who applied for and received an allocation.
While I was also initially very interested in the fund, I ultimately decided to stay with GPROX which accounts for around 18% of our portfolio; and I did not want to open an account ou…
Shadow,
Interesting article concerning Wasatch. The fund that was profiled (WAIOX) was to be capped at $20 million at inception...today the fund has $462 million in aum, an expense ratio of 2.25%, and is open to new investments.
I am not going to be surprised at all if global micro-cap gets hard closed very quickly at a small asset base...say $100-150 million or so. For those of us who may be interested in the fund, we better have our money ready to go when the fund becomes…
@jlev I see that now that you mention it. But, if you check out the paragraph directly beneath that box you will see information explaining what the beginning expense ratio will be for both investor and institutional share classes through August 31,…
As a regular viewer of NBR I was appalled when I first discovered that CNBC had taken over production of the show and that most all the regular reporters had been let go who I enjoyed very much. While the show has certainly changed, it is not CNBC P…
Added VBINX to the moderate allocation funds I had listed instead of the couch potato portfolio as VBINX equity to fixed income ratio is ~60/40...closer to the other funds listed.
As of 2/13/15, 1 yr, 3 yr, 5 yr, 10 yr returns
VBINX 11.…
MJG,
I appreciate your insightful post.
The funds I chose for the comparison were based on the fact that I have held two of them for nearly a decade and in combination with the others listed comprise many of the most widely held no-load moderate a…
I read this article in our local paper as well this morning. It takes very little effort to find moderate allocation funds that easily outperform the couch potato portfolio of index funds. Our two primary moderate allocation funds (PRWCX & FPACX…
Folks who frequent sites like MFO probably know their household net worth at higher percentages than average. Was somewhat surprised at how high our household net worth is in comparison for our age group...does that mean we are actually doing well c…
You are welcome John. My wife and I have a strong position in Global Reach. Doubtful that Grandeur Peak funds are in many workplace retirement accounts which would also limit individual accounts.
GPROX is 10% of our portfolio...trying to decide if I want to transfer some shares from TDA directly to GP before month end so we can continue adding dollars in the future, or selling some of our position in a small/midcap moderate allocation fund (…
My situation is much different as I am still 16 years from full retirement and my wife is 20 years away. We keep a 60/40 portfolio...we are happy with overall returns and we sleep at night. We probably keep a much higher percentage of global smallca…
Slight inaccuracy in the article...Janus Mercury was not renamed Enterprise. Janus Research became Janus Global Research and Janus Mercury then became Janus Research around end of 06 beginning 07.
