I think this has always been more of a “currency fund,” along with the other Hassenstab fund. And with the dollar having been the least weak currency over the last several years (especially since zero rates have reigned in many European countries), …
I am strongly debating switching from bond OEFs, which currently comprise 10% of my dad’s income-managed retirement portfolio (essentially bucket 1), to bond ETFs (and i friggin’ hate bond ETFs/indexes).
At TDA, the 180-day holding period made it …

@VintageFreak, I thought those two funds were different versions of the same portfolio haha.
But I just looked at performance charts comparing the two funds, and VLAAX actually outperformed over almost every time frame. And over 10 years, it’s $5…
I was still curious about your thinking....thanks for sharing, @Crash! :)
I think Canada is under-owner by US investors, and I think there are possibly some monopolies to be found there....I own BCE and ENB (though the latter has large US holdings,…
Wow. Thanks, Crash! I was going to slowly build positions in CM, BMO, and one other....but got distracted by a “SQUIRREL!” and sold them and bought something else.
@Crash: May I ask why you like it so much? I have actually owned a small piece of it recently, but let it go as it was too small to be worth it (I was going to build a position), and it seems like the Canadian banks, though “high yield,” don’t grow …
@msf, Aren’t Treasury’s federal tax-exempt?
But let’s go back 20 years to early 2000, when the S&P 500 was at roughly 1500.
If you had bought then and held until now, that works out to be an average annual return of just 4%.
4% is better than …
Dentists? Seriously? https://success.ada.org/en/wellness/mental-illness-and-suicide-in-dental-school
Not sure whether your post was saying you couldn’t believe it, or refuting the OP’s article, but: I believe that article was about dental students..…
@MikeM (and others),
RPHYX shows as open at TD Ameritrade, but at Fidelity it still shows as closed. However, I put an order in today at Fidelity, and the order went through....well, I should say, the system accepted the order. I will let you know …
PSA: Many brokers offer AOFAX and FKASX load-waived...and many others as well. You have to check individually at your broker. (That’s usually why loaded funds are mentioned by posters... other than by @Old_Skeet, who buys A shares due to duration of…
Thanks for the article @davfor. Interesting things to think about. I really liked “the most hated bull market in history.” The end of the stock bull, and the rise in interest rates are two of the most trumpeted ideas since after the Taper Tantrum.
Honestly honestly honestly, and yes, I know it’s the next level of complexity for most people above individual stocks even (let alone equity and bond mutual funds)—I think preferred stocks could be an answer for many people. Especially if needing mo…
@hank: Hahaha I almost said something about the spelling/typo, but didn’t want to belabor my point. But you’re right, copy/paste is less language dependent haha. Cheers, good sir :)
No big deal, but PRWCX traded ex-div today.
Group B: record date Dec 12 (yesterday), ex-div Dec 13.
Aren’t dates of record one day AFTER ex-date? That’s how it is for exchange traded securities...maybe it’s different for OEFs?
Just bought into this fund (the A share class) at Fido, and holding in 1:1 with FRIFX. So far just a small piece of my OEF-only 403b, but have been adding on rising interest rate days. Thanks, Shadow!!
A M* discussion board personality who parrots a lot of what @Junkster says (and others here at MFO), but takes credit that it’s his own “research.” We disagree on this poster’s usefulness (I happen to follow/enjoy many of the discussion threads he s…
I remember being a young teenager in the late 80’s-early 90’s and first learning of the words “money market” and “mutual fund”....I always thought that the word “market” meant it HAD to be invested in the stock market! :)
Paramecium....Hahahaha....I believe it’s three links of a chain (to “link” an internet site).
To see performance when comparing an ETF, or other investment vehicle that is traded throughout the day, with an OEF on M*, use the OEF as the starting ch…
Many Utility stocks were up, including UTG, a CEF (CEFs often trade in sympathy with the stock market, regardless of the asset classes held by the CEF). Defensive (higher quality) bond funds were up (total bond market, PTIAX, etc.), while “higher ri…
@MikeW: maybe look, also, at the low volatility international ETFs of various flavors. Less focus on dividends, but a similar lower risk way to get international exposure
The ones I know of:
VIGI (intl equivalent of VIG)
IDV (intl equivalent of DVY)
IDVY (iShares EURO dividend)
DVYA (iShares Asia/Pacific dividend)
DVYE (iShares EM dividend)
VYMI (intl equivalent of VYM)
IDOG (intl “dogs of the EAFE” or similar, appr…
You guys, isn’t @johnN not a native English speaker? I think yes....why don’t you guys go post on a French language investing site and see how you feel? Doesn’t excuse not reading/interpreting a linked article correctly, but I have seen some snarkin…
Thanks Shadow!
Has anyone tried to buy at a brokerage house? Just tried to enter a trade at Fidelity, and got the message “This is an advisor fund and unavailable for retail investors.”
fundalarm and others,
I only mentioned the K-1 because it was issued by an MLP....and preferreds issued by publicly-traded partnerships that issue K-1s, issue K-1s. Non-partnerships do not. And since NSS is a debt instrument, it doesn't issue a K-1…
One more aside on K-1s....preferred stocks of K-1 issuing companies, could sometimes have higher amounts of UBTI (only need to worry if held in a tax-advantaged account) than its common share cousin. This is just a generality, and therefore not alwa…
Thank you for sharing @davidrmoran....that was incredibly interesting and informative. And a really cool “format” (for lack of a better term) on a mobile device!
