Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
I agree that the MFO tool is excellent. Another one is on the Nasdaq website. It will take up to 25 symbols.

"Nice clichés but not of much use to someone who doesn't have forever time horizon or has perhaps witnessed far more crashes than since these rules were written."
This is one truth that I have gone around with Hulbert on. Sooner or later one must s…
@Old_Joe,
Sometime back there was a thread on that same thought. I remember that Qatar had been reclassified from frontier to emerging and how that would be good news for EM funds. I don't know the technical difference but it's just another of the …
This has been a great discussion on these L/S funds. cman asked me a direct question so I will attempt to give a reasonable answer. My logic however will not compare with his.
I bought this fund for the L/S feature and also to get more exposure to …
This is a great thread. Thanks to all for your opinions. I had been researching LS funds for some time and eventually I stayed with American Century whom I have most of my assets with. I selected ACDJX and it has done fairly well so far. I understan…
Google displayed the same kind of actions when they overpaid on some of their acquisitions. I agree. I'm not sure why Apple went and bought this company for so much. A lot of heads are shaking this morning.
Schwab sends these commentaries out via email each month and while I usually don't read too much into them, I agree with the above that she has been correct on her assumptions.
Hulbert is a permabull too but his writings turn me off. More ego pump…
I too have noticed large crowds at farmers markets in urban areas. It seems to be attracting shoppers who are looking for better prices and they get a good product in return.
Looking at the long term chart of TWTR, I wonder if there was any real long term enthusiasm for this stock? The lock out period kept investors tied to the stock but now that period is over and the price has done a round trip. I am one of those who h…
@jlev,
Regarding your question on Global versus plain real estate funds; The obvious answer is the global one. I felt that gave me a better diversified real estate investment. But your question is valid. Some real estate funds are very specific in …
I read your comment as disagreeing with what MikeM had posted. I apologize for that.
Agree. Fund companies but shares of stock and distribute them amongst their funds as they see fit. It is easy to have duplication in those cases.
MikeM: " Buying similar funds in the same category for diversification is hog-wash" One of the biggest mistakes some MFO's make.
Regards,
Ted
Why not give your reason why Ted? We would like to know. I myself do not see diversification buying funds …
I'll be interested to see the answer on this one also. I was a victim of old math to new math and back to old math. A whole generation of math illiterates were produced.
There is a fine line between the Potters and the Baileys. Old Man Potter might be a shrewd businessman but if he follows the law then one might say he followed the straight and narrow path to success. Bailey had a social conscience. If his investmen…
There will be no change on this issue until a new President is elected that favors the pipeline. Warren wants the railroads to handle the oil and that's that.
The average homeowner would probably sell their property to the company to make way for the pipeline. I'm sure the company has calculated the costs of private versus public. Build it on the side of a public highway.
Nothing virtual about what I sa…
Well, if I had wished to be gloomy or feel doomed, I would have put all my money in the old Steadman Oceanographic fund and watch it sink over the decades. Pun was intended.
Krugman is not at all to be trusted when advancing his various negative/leftwing agendas, extremely odd for so notionally distinguished an intellectual. Just one example; there are many others (involving Ferguson, e.g.):
Two can play this game but …
Hank makes a good comment. Length of time with a company shows you have faith in them and you have been treated well. In my case I have been with American Century 28 years now. I had investments with other fund families along the way but when it cam…
Why the left proclaims to be so inclusive yet paints the negative broad brush on conservatives shows their true colors. As long as one agrees with them they are fine. However there is no place for opposing views.
Pricing depends on what kind of contract the pharmacy has with the distributor. If the pharmacy is part of a large chain then they can negotiate a better price. Also, each pharmacy sets their own dispensing fee. A store like Wal-Mart has a low fee a…
That is one way to drive down healthcare prices. Consumer involvement is a powerful thing.
One should always ask their doctor if there is a generic or a less expensive version of a prescription they are getting. In most cases an older and cheaper …
There are studies that show a general increase in the occurrence of cataracts in humans due to increased solar activity. One good investment would be a pair of quality sunglasses. Investing in our own well being is always positive.
