What @Maurice said reminded me of something. The networks are fighting for the younger demographic. This is the key for the future or so they say. No wonder the social media aspect is so big with all these new shows.
Lately I have been watching a …
The title of the thread threw me off as well but not in a bad way so to speak. I like reading Rowland's commentary.
As for the required commentary, most of it is just copy and paste from the leading paragraph of the link. Not much effort there.
I don't use social media either but from what I understand from the kids, if you click facebook then the Facebook app launches and whatever you share will be put on your page whether it be a link or a picture. Same with Twitter.
Also it probably o…
It does appear the Carter malaise has returned. The question is, what will turn things around? The middle class is being eroded away.
In this day and age, defense is a priority. I'm watching PM Abbott of Australia now live telling Australians that…
I'm reading the 18th to decide the price and the 19th for go live.

However, that seems to go against the Chinese thing with numbers. The 18th makes more sense since the number 8 is a very good number for the Chine…
"Scotland just seems to small (population, GDP, etc) to me to create the black swan event the author is concerned about." (Edited for spelling)
I agree, Scotland is too small of an economy to trigger any black swan. It does as @jlev mentions bring …
On a side note, in the closest big city to us they have a TGIFridays which is now part of the Sentinal and Tri Artisan group. It used to be under the Carlson group until it was bought out. Along with TGIF, the local franchise also brought in Italian…
I am at a disadvantage since I eat at OG once a year or so when I am stateside. I cannot disagree with eating at the mom and pop resto. The best food is there.
Q:
"I think you're also looking at a smaller pool of retail investors as a % of the broad population than you had 5-10 years ago."
A:
That might be a good thing, suggesting that the smaller pool is perhaps a little more seasoned, and maybe a little …
@bee, generally this kind of investment is only a small portion of your overall portfolio. My ARYVX is about 8% currently because of the success it had prior to this latest downturn. Personally I wouldn't want it much above that.
Every time I go to Olive Garden the place is full.
These activist hedge funds need to stay out of the way when it comes to everyday business. Next thing you know the all you can eat salad will end up being four pieces of lettuce, one tomato choppe…
Thanks for clearing that up. M* has had more than their share of classification errors.
I hold MAINX as a small portion of my portfolio. It has done well though not as good as the high yield universe. I have some of that as well. We all invest in …
@Junkster, I was wondering if you could clarify your statement. "Great fund. MAINX a good fund but too stodgy for my tastes and not in the emerging markets bond category."
It is an emerging market bond fund, focused to Asia of course. Perhaps I mi…
@Old_Joe, I totally agree. That difference is becoming blurred. I feel it every time we travel and the TSA goons are barking orders at us like chattel. It's dehumanizing. This is surely not the same country I grew up in.
Yea I am not a fan of the militarization of the police. Especially when every department and agency has their own "police" force these days. Does the department of education really need their own force? Of course they don't call it that but instead …
@Catch, Ever since a former president spoke that famous line, "it all depends on what the meaning of is is", the meaning of truth has been destroyed.
I just heard John Kerry (Lurch) say that this is not a war against terror but rather a counter …
This just came up in another thread. Another poster brought up ACMVX which has done very well in this bull market. Looking at a chart that included the 2008-09 bear market, this fund took a big hit but it recovered quickly. This is obviously volatil…
Thanks Old_Joe. Yes it has done very well. It will be interesting to see how it will perform in a bear market compared to a SP index fund.
Edit: I'm going to post this question in the risk and volatility thread where it is more on the topic.
I'm thinking of a comparison between a balanced fund and a asset allocation target fund. In the fund of funds usually there is a small amount of high yield bond fund. So if the balanced also has a small percentage of high yield I really do not see a…
@AKAFlack, Agree, someone in their latter years should not forget their account. The author of this drivel assumed everyone is young.
The absolutely terrible investment decisions that journalists make are something that just can't be emphasized …
A somewhat related article about China's appetite for iron and one company's disastrous result. The most interesting part is the importing of Chinese workers that would have been paid Chinese wages. Australia would have none of that.

Anna makes a good point. Internet authors whether they are journalists or cartoonist depend on clicks. That is their way of rating their success.
This point was brought up the last time we went through this.
The business news on ABC Australia (Australia Broadcasting Company) has been reporting on the commodity downturn in detail. Australia's economy is heavily dependent on iron, coal, etc. with China being their biggest customer of course.

It strikes me that one of the reasons we’ve been so long without a stock market correction is that ‘everyone knows’ that corrections don’t last and the secret is not to sell.
I have tried some other portfolio analysis tools and came up with the same kind of results. Some funds are "other" when the tool doesn't have the classification it needs. ARYVX (Global Real Estate) is a usual culprit. They probably work well if yo…
Here is a good article on Apple Pay. A lot of details are spelled out here and in the comments section as well.
