Anybody using brain supplements?

edited October 26 in Off-Topic
There seem to be more and more of these ads appearing on the programs I view. Just picked 1 at random to post. I haven’t tried any. Wonder if I’m missing something?

Aging and longevity is the new wave science that promoters are into The best brain supplement is exercise. But the promoters don’t want you to know that because it is free. As an aside, I take 22 supplements daily for aging and longevity. Yes, a bit of overkill I know. I am sort of using myself as a Guinea pig to see what works and what doesn’t. Kind of like trading and investing. Over time I keep adding and subtracting from my longevity regimen as my body dictates. Not all supplements will agree with our particular bodies, But everything I try is backed by science and studies on animals and humans. Plus, I have bloodwork annually to make sure something I am taking isn’t harming my kidneys, liver, etc. Interesting though that I don’t take any prescribed doctor medications.

Edit. Quality of life is far more important than quantity of life. Meaning, it is not how long we live but how long we live with a good quality of life.
  • @junkster : Just thinking of all of the income one could make with 22 endorsements !!

@hank Gal Pals DR. says don't waste your money on brain supplements.

I read that learning new music instrument, chess, and other brain-related activities help to retain the brain capability. Many instruments use both side of the brain in order to train the muscle memory. I enjoying bird watching that involves tracking the subjects and identifying them. It keeps me thinking full time while it is really fun. The other is to engage with my friends frequently (no social media here).

Edit: Don’t forget traveling that may help to learn a new language and culture. This helps to gain broader perspective on the world.

Maybe I should be looking at something to dull the brain?

Appreciate the insights. I was fairly certain @Old_Joe hasn’t been using anything.:)

My doc gives me stuff to control BP and cholesterol. Has for years. About 15 years ago I got on a health kick (1) Dropped a lot of weight and restrict calories daily, (2) An hour or more of exercise daily with at least 30 minutes on the vigorous side (treadmill / biking / walk behind snowblower or mower). And (3) consume limited amount of alcohol daily - only at mealtime. It has worked pretty well. I still travel quite a bit at 79. Lugging 60-70 pounds of luggage around not as easy as once was. But I think it’s important to keep pushing yourself. I’ve done a lot of reading / research on the alcohol. Health benefits depend on individual. Plenty of skeptics on that one.
  • I suspect that one's reading and involvement with all things at MFO can provide a full mental stimulant to support that side of brain health. The physical side of brain health can arrive from so many other aspects of an individuals choice, long term life style and/or heredity.

Very true and as much as I dislike social media at least it is stimulating. One thing I forgot to mention is probably the best thing for brain health as we age besides exercise is sleep. Believe if you look it up you with find lack of sleep one of the biggest contributors to dementia in old age, As for lithium mentioned above by @davidrmoran it is available low dose on Amazon as a supplement. Some longevity experts recommend it as part of their daily regimen. I tried it but it didn’t agree
