    "ONLY THE WEAK WILL FAIL!"
There's always a bit of truth in what liars say!

The starts/stops all somehow remind me of those classic lines from Blazing Saddles:
"He keep's coming and going, and coming and going. But always too soon!"

Administration finally listened, looks like. Most IG bonds still negative after news. But, perhaps some hope of avoiding recession. And an SP500 bear market.
  • Now we know who is in charge!

TL;DR: Playing his own game, setting his own rules, Trump blinked.

So the "econ team" (sic) got a leg up on the "tariff team" (sic) finally.

But just like the postponement from March to April, doesn't this just postpone the bulk of the pain and suffering to start again in July, with all due respect to that which has already been self-inflicted?

He can't possibly come to his senses/learn tariff basics in 90 days, can he? That is a long time though to conjure up some winning stories I guess.

Aside: Further evidence we've effectively got a 2-yr old mind at the helm.

Yeah. But I'll side with @larryB on this one. I suspect if the administration listened this time, they'll try and make it right going forward. A dream I have.

So it took all of one week for him to buckle under the pressure.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/09/trump-announces-90-day-tariff-pause-for-at-least-some-countries.html

    Excerpt:

Trump’s Truth Social post credited his decision to pause the full effect of tariffs on the fact that “more than 75 Countries” have contacted U.S. officials “to negotiate a solution” to trade concerns that he raised in imposing the new duties.

50 countries almost immediately, now just as fast, up to 75. Truly amazing (read, unbelievable).

Not stated is that 90% of those wanting to negotiate (whatever the real number is), are likely to start the negotiations with, "Are you out of your f*cking mind? And oh BTW, that data of yours, ALL wrong bub."

So I'm all for the high hopes, but we saw the effect of the March-to-April can kick, I'm guessing July will feel like deja vu all over again.

It's all opinion. No right or wrong.
  • Around 830 ET this morning he tweeted out a plea to BUY.

Around 4 hours later, he announces the 90-day pause and indices shoot-the-moon.

In Trumplandia, market manipulation isn't a crime, it's just standard business practice.
  • Charlie Gasparino says "What happened in the bond market overnight, the spike in yields on the 30-year and the 10-year bond, which showed that people were dumping our bonds," he noted. "And from what I understand, this is what forced the hand of this 90-day reprieve now."

    Makes sense to me...
  • The official adm position:

    https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/09/trump-tariffs-live-updates.html

    Excerpt:

Bessent says that Trump was always planning to pull back his sweeping tariff plans for dozens of countries just days after announcing it.

“This was his strategy all along,” Bessent tells reporters at the White House.

“You might even say he goaded China into a bad position,” Bessent says, referring to the fact that China, which imposed retaliatory tariffs, now faces higher U.S. duties while others get a reprieve.

    Sounds like a W!

Here's a funny one. Market will rip!
He kinda forgot the "after a self-induced bear market" part.

Gonna have to throw a WEAK flag on his play!

    https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/09/trump-tariffs-live-updates.html

    Excerpt:

‘BE COOL’: Three times Trump dug in on tariffs before he reversed course

The president for days has insisted that his tariffs would not be lifted, despite turmoil in the markets and backlash from investors, voters and allies.

Here are three examples of Trump digging in, just days before reversing course:

“BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!” Trump writes on Truth Social hours before his tariff pause announcement, as economic fallout tariffs mounts.

On Monday, Trump says from the White House that “we’re not looking at” a tariff pause. “We’re not looking at that.”

“Be Strong, Courageous, and Patient, and GREATNESS will be the result!” Trump writes on Truth Social on Monday just before markets opened.

    BLINK...BLINK...BLINK...

DEFINATELY. The best yippy, believe me.
  • I doubt if Trump took in his proposed country by country tariff rates very seriously. He probably doesn't even understand it's squiggle filled formula. But, he is convinced he is the world's best negotiator. And, it appears he has now given himself some time to negotiate on a one to one basis with countries willing to do so without the markets being in constant turmoil....at least for a while. I suspect he thinks that great deals, whatever he comes to decide that means, are just around the corner (even though he appears to be inching towards a decoupling with China). Maybe he blinked today. But, I don't think he'll lose any sleep over it.

MAGA and his Cabinet are already gushing over his 'brilliance' and awesome 'deal-making' skills here. Even Bill QUACKMan, who only yesterday was bemoaning tariffs and wishing for saner heads to prevail, is back in the Trump camp, praising his 'plan' after today's spike up.

I presume Goldman will be out soon with an 'analyst' report saying the chances of a recession "are greatly diminished", too.

  • Not quite ready to step up to the roulette table tilted by Trump's id.
  • WaPo on the switcharoo...words just fail me here....

By late Wednesday afternoon, Trump was saying he had been thinking about switching course “over the last few days.”

The final decision, he said, “probably came together early this morning, fairly early this morning. Just wrote it up. We didn’t have the use of, we didn’t have access to lawyers,” he told reporters in the Oval Office. “We wrote it up from our hearts.”

“But this was something certainly we’ve been talking about for a period of time, and we decided to pull the trigger, and we did it today, and we’re happy about it,” he added.

Yeah, the only people who believe that are Donnie and is sycophants....

After the announcement, Trump aides raced to declare that it had been the strategy all along.

“President Trump’s master strategy, bold statesmanship and brilliant tactical planning has done more to reform broken international trade in days than anyone has achieved in decades while economically and politically isolating the global architect of economic aggression: China,” Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller wrote on X.

But inside the White House, even some senior-level officials appeared to be blindsided by the reversal. Moments after Trump’s Truth Social post about the “pause,” aides sprang up to confer about how to proceed, moving quickly to call an outdoor press gaggle with Bessent and Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s press secretary.

Wouldn't you just love to see what trades Eric, Don Jr and Ivanka, the Saudis made the last few days but alas there is no one left to look for corruption. So obvious but it's sad his supporters don't see it. Hey, got to hand it to him, he pulled it off.
