Politics & Racism Surface in Aftermath of DC Air Disaster

edited January 30 in Off-Topic
I’m not sure whether this belongs in OT. There’s a case for considering it under the investing umbrella: (1) Civil aviation is big business. Some of us own airlines. (2) There’s a lot of public (think muni bonds) and private infrastructure involved. Infrastructure is often considered as an alternative investment and was recently written about in The Observer. (3) Top business / corporate executives and their staffs depend on safe reliable air travel. (4) Do not overlook the heavy reliance of FedX, UPS, Amazon and the like on safe reliable commercial air transport

Tragedies like this are deeply emotional. I ask that everyone temper their comments. Our hearts go out to the begrieved.

President Donald Trump went on the offensive against diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives at his press briefing on the plane crash, but there is no evidence to back up Trump's claims that DEI policies or any deficiencies on the part of air traffic controllers were factors in the accident and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said earlier that "everything was standard in the lead up." Trump called Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary in the Biden administration, "bulls--," and said Buttigieg has "run [the Department of Transportation] right into the ground with his diversity." Excerpt from:Trump Goes on the Offensive in DC Plane Crash

"When I arrived in 2016, I made that change very early on, because I always felt this was a job that, and other jobs too, but this was a job that had to be of superior intelligence, and we didn't really have that. And we had it. And then when I left office and Biden took over, he changed them back to lower than ever before," he said. "Their policy was horrible and their politics was even worse. We have to have our smartest people. It doesn't matter what they look like, how they speak," he said, referring to his rollback on DEl hiring. "They have to be naturally talented geniuses. You can't have regular people doing that job. They can't do it."

  • All Americans should be embarrassed by his comments this morning.

His tweets last night/this morning were sufficient clues to project what the buffoon would say to the world today. I sadly got stuck in a barber's chair for most of it and had to see and hear the buffoon for the first time since election day.

Embarrassed is being overly kind. Shamed and disgusted are probably closer.

I feel for the families and loved ones of those directly involved. And I fear daily for our beloved country.

David. These are not my views. I’m quoting President Trump’s comments today on last night’s tragic airliner / helicopter accident. Please do not shoot the messenger.

I get your drift. But If you want a strong condemnation as a “head,” I’ll need to move it to off-topic.

    Edit: what David said.

Please consider giving less oxygen / airtime to nonsense. He feeds on attention - no publicity is bad publicity for him. The media gives him enough. Have you not learned enough about attention seeking posters in this forum? There is no investment value in this.

@BaluBalu - Thanks for your comment. Is it your opinion that this should be moved to off topic? Or are you arguing that comments by the President of the United States about a tragedy like this should not be allowed anywhere on this board? Please explain.

PS - I did notice that you moved the lengthy “Executives Actions” thread to OT. Thank you. I’ll listen to what others in addition to you have to say before making such a change in this case. While positioning of this thread in investing is admittedly borderline, I believe you will find that a large percentage of my threads under the investing heading do indeed pertain to investing.

  • Moving to OT will be better.
  • Flush it.
    Is air travel safe?

Thanks for weighing in. I feel the same way when I’m busy doing something with both hands tied up - the remote not readily at hand - and the buffoon begins to speak. I’ve always thought that ”Sunlight is the best disinfectant”. The words say more about the individual than you or I can. Apparently this is rubbing a lot of people the wrong way. I’ll cave and move the discussion over to OT.

  • It strike me that using diversity as the cause of everyone's daily problems and every national crisis is very effective since it encompasses a wide range of hates that people might have. Diversity is a wide umbrella with whatever meaning I want. It gins up more than one citizen mini-wars, hides the true subject (the crash), and releases all responsibility of leadership. What a powerful word that, nevertheless, has lost meaning.

Isn't that just what the born "privileged" are afraid of. Otherwise, were the connection true, it would prove itself out with needing push after push after push.

  • In his comments, I think Trump blamed "dwarfs". Now really...that's odd.

  • He is a disgusting excuse for a human being. This was beyond the pale given the circumstances, even by his gutter-press standards.

For a TV 'entertainer' he has no idea how to read the room.....

More adjectives for the buffoon's verbal diarrhea episode today:
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/trumps-grotesque-plane-crash-comments-213315843.html

    Excerpt:
Lawmakers found no shortage of words to describe Trump’s reaction, calling it
    “grotesque and outrageous,”
    “downright disgusting,”
    “disgraceful,”
    “absolutely shameful,”
    “despicable,”
    “absolutely vile,”
    “racist and sexist,”
    “a betrayal,”
    “monstrous,”
    “simply un-American,”
    "craven” and
    “pathetic.”

The only ones it seems we all missed are expected and predictable.

On the truth and facts side, you may find this detailed, heartfelt analysis by Capt Steeeve with a map and the actual audio recordings to be:
  • Thank you, @stillers.

  • this crash has absolutely a connection to investing and the economy, its just that MAGA is unable to grok anything simple or causal.

first, consider how much critical freight (by value) is hauled by air, and how much business is done by passenger travel.
so now, after a crash, lets get the understaffed ATC to quit :

From the WSJ - Pentagon releases name of third helicopter crew member - after delay.

    Excerpt from above linked article:

The Army released the name of the third crew member who died Wednesday when the helicopter she was co-piloting collided with an American Airlines jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Cpt. Rebecca M. Lobach, of Durham, N.C., who served as an Army aviation officer since July 2019, was identified Saturday by the Army after her name wasn't disclosed a day earlier along with two other (male) crew members killed in the accident … Lobach’s name was withheld at the request of her family, which later agreed to let the Army disclose it, officials said. There has been no explanation for the delay. A statement by the family released by the Army didn't address the issue, though it asked for privacy "as we grieve this devastating loss."

And thanks for the comment @a2z. I do think that compared to a lot of the current “investing” topics under discussion the safety & reliability of air travel / air transport may belong there. But I should make clear that I initially posted the story with a somewhat more provocative (possibly confusing) heading - so can understand the resistance encountered.

"From the WSJ - Pentagon releases name of third helicopter crew member - after unexplainable delay."

Trump and Hegseth blamed this accident on DEI programs.
Cpt. Rebecca M. Lobach's family requested that her name not be disclosed.
I believe they did not want to get drawn into the DEI controversy.
The family changed course and has now allowed the Army to reveal her name.

My thoughts too. But Trump’s tirade was directed at gender and racial diversity programs (DEI) in the ATC system. In the case of this poor soul, she was a military aviator. They’ve already raised the issue of women serving in ground combat - although Hegseth backed off from that under Senate confirmation questioning. It would be sad, but not unthinkable, if the morons would now seek to limit the role of women in military aviation - or scapegoat them in some manner here …

I’ve never felt unsafe in the hands of a female pilot. Admittedly, I’m not in the cockpit. But when I’m on the road driving I’d much prefer to be in the vicinity of cautious women drivers than a bunch of half-crazed, aggressive & inconsiderate male counterparts. Perhaps different in your area. Apologies if this sounds sexist. I’m just weighing in on the manure being peddled by the Trump administration and may have been sullied by it.

    My thoughts three.

I fear it'll end up being portrayed as one of those "See, I told you so" moments. All other probable causes or failures will be ground to dust and swept under the rug except for Obama and Biden policies being the root cause.

  • seems pretty scientific to say that w/out unbiased data backing you up, it is sexist, racist, etc...

but hey, my bias is that a fox news regulars are unqualified to safely flip my burger, much less run a country.

In a few weeks, when the crash is well out of the news, the Maga-Maggots will cite a new report that the crew consisted of three Haitian transgender transvestites distracted by thoughts of a feast of poodle steak and fried kitten that evening. (They're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats ....)
