  • I wonder is Starbucks is hedged for such potential coffee bean price issues. Otherwise, that cup of Joe will cost as much as a pack of smokes.

Starbucks does hedge against rising arabica coffee bean prices.

    :)
The good news is that coffee is about the only commodity that’s actually up today amid a lot of carnage in that sector. So the FIC (Felon in Chief) is good for something.
  • I ordered some more Sumatra Dark because its price ( at least where I buy it) remained below any other organic of similar quality. The addict worries about disruption in the supply chain, …

How long before FOTUS or his cult influencers start crowing about how he "lowered the price of coffee" through his "strong" actions?

@BenWP -- I read you. Thankfully I only drink decaf beans now, so my 'withdrawl' would be significantly less than most, being a nice-to-have versus a need-to-have. :)

Tariffs - the wave of the future. They really do work.... at least, until somebody with any kind of clue finally calls your bluff.

From Heather Cox Richardson's Letters from an American:

"Will Freeman of the Council on Foreign Relations, a think tank specializing in U.S. foreign policy, posted: 'I can’t think of many *worse* strategic blunders for the U.S., as it competes w/ China, than going nuclear against its oldest strategic ally & last big country in S. America where it enjoys a trade advantage…. Trump certainly expects that b[ecause] 1/3 of Colombian exports go to the U.S. Petro will be forced to back down. But Petro seems to welcome the fight & has already signaled wishes to deepen ties w/ China. Colombia will lose partnership on security it badly needs. Only China stands to gain from this.'"

I can't wait to see what other brilliant maneuvers are carried out
by Trump, an undeniable strategic mastermind.
His sensible actions will surely make our country great once again!

From The Barron's Daily this AM:

Coffee Prices Hit Record High After Trump’s Tariff Threats

Coffee prices hit an all-time high after President Donald Trump backed off a tariff threat to Colombia, one of the world’s largest coffee producers, following a dispute over deporting migrants. Colombia supplies about 30% of U.S. coffee imports.

Continuous arabica coffee futures on the Intercontinental Exchange closed at $3.49, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Coffee prices haven’t been this high since 1972. Arabica is the most widely grown kind of coffee.

Trump called on Sunday for immediate 25% tariffs on Colombia after its president, Gustavo Petro, refused two repatriation flights of Colombian migrants from the U.S. aboard military cargo planes. Petro later agreed to the U.S. terms for repatriation.

A White House spokeswoman said the tariff orders would be “held in reserve” until the U.S. returns the first planeload of Colombian migrants.

Trump’s threats added to worries about weather-related factors reducing global coffee supplies. Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer, had a record number of forest fires last year. Vietnam, the second-largest coffee producer, has warned of lower outputs after severe droughts.

What’s Next: The U.S., the world’s second-largest coffee importer after the European Union, expects to import 1.5 million tons of coffee beans this year, according to Agriculture Department data. Starbucks, the largest U.S. coffee importer, reports earnings today.

He's paving the way for a future Dem president to repair the GQP-caused damage (if s/he can!) ... but by then, 'MAGA' will stand for 'Make America Grovel Again' because by then we'll have pi&&ed off so many countries under his tinpot regime....
  • There's more to that plane landing business and tariff fight than meets the eye. For example I didn't know that "... Colombia and the U.S. had an existing agreement for deportations under former president Joe Biden, and it accepted 475 deportation flights from 2020 to 2024, accepting 124 flights in 2024 alone."

Heather Cox Richardson - Letters From an American, January 27, 2025. Link
  • Are those being sent to Columbia not all their citizens? Why do we need an agreement with Columbia to send their people back to them?

I am just trying to learn about this mess.
  • edited January 28
Yes, these deportation flights have been ongoing for several years.
Deportation flight issues are usually handled by low level personnel
but Trump needed to thump his chest and decided to create a kerfuffle.
Also, the Biden administration was actually responsible for apprehending
the Columbians that Trump just deported.
Of course, Trump will take all the credit.
Humility is apparently not his strong suit!

And now the Dems scream about inflation...mmm...where were you when inflation hit the ceiling?

  • Deportation agreement! How much per head is this costing the tax payer?
  • How about this @FD1000,

He's had 4-yrs and 8 days as president to do something kind or good, something intelligent, something that benefits someone other than himself and he has failed at a most miserable rate. Even worse than the market predictors, analysts and gurus you have no regard for but I digress.

Anyway when he does do something good I'll give him a big ol' attaboy. Until then he's only worth every bit of derangement I could muster if I was so inclined but I have better things to do.

Until then we're just following a request that "If you see something, say something." Maintaining silence or ignoring it is worse than doing nothing.

What is TDS? An acronym for 'trumps dumb stuff' ?

IIRC from his previous posts, FD immigrated to the US from Brazil, world’s largest producer of coffee. So, you should expect his contribution to the thread.

    Rick,

In TDS, I assumed D stands for Daddy. As in, Trump fills the Daddy void in real life for some people.

One has to be Godless to pledge unquestionable allegiance to any politician. Weak, broken people. Pray that their souls may be filled with love for God so there is no void left to hanker for any politician.

One universally liked (and very useful) poster no longer posts (or posts very rarely) in this forum because of one other poster whose every post is designed to always draw attention to himself. The poster who has decided to stay away has shared his reasoning when other posters reached him through private message.

I am sure there are many undisclosed casualties in this forum because of the limitless attention seeking poster.

If you like the forum to be a thriving community, take steps towards it. No need for altruism. Do it out of self interest.

I think it's perfectly applicable to describing him as well. Deranged.

He and his cult were just as 'deranged' in their railings against Biden, Democrats, and anyone else they disagreed with, so I think it's fair to say there's more than enough 'derangement' to go around.

... and no, I'm not making a feeble attempt at 'bothsiderism' here. In some cases, modern politics, if not society at large, has become 'deranged' in one way or other.
