Government funding plan collapses, Trump makes new demands. The 'first' battle ???

edited December 18 in Other Investing

Debit ceiling rejection article

Personal opinion: I'm not surprised with this action, and this has nothing to do with any political party. The long standing habit by both parties has filled too many legislative bills over decades that are loaded with crap in order to find a vote here and there. A sad state of affairs.

We are likely to revisit a government shutdown as the one during his first term in 2018-2019. Can’t believe that Johnson is bending to his demands and he has not even swore in until January 20, 2025.

Because monetary and fiscal government happenings affect the investing environment?

    @FD1000
I'm sure the proclamation by Mr. Trump had impact upon the markets for December 18.
You, of all people; should be fully aware that bonds, notes, bills and other forms of credit are the 'lubrication' that allows the smooth flow of 'cash' that provides for governments, companies and individuals to be able to function in a 'full faith and credit' environment that is the global economy.

One may have the finest, fully blueprinted gasoline automotive engine for maximum performance; yet it will be nothing and will not function, without 'lubrication'.

If you partake in 'X' you need to send a message to Mr. Trump and Mr. Musk and voice your opinion.

EDIT NOTE: I misspelled Musk, as Mush.
  • We found pretty quickly that this thread belongs in the off topic because trashing followed pretty fast.
  • @FD1000 U.S. house speaker Johnson had obtained a bi-partisan agreement with the U.S. Senate, being both Republican and Democrat; as well as the Democrat house. Mr. Musk and Mr. Trump intervened, with Mr. Musk presenting numerous postings on 'X' regarding his dislike of the legislation; and the eventual phone call from Mr. Trump to house speaker, Mr. Johnson to shutdown the agreement and not present the funding bill for a vote.
These are the simple facts of the process and this post merely presents those facts.
The possible impact of a U.S. government shutdown is indeed of consequence relative to the U.S. and global economies and is 'on-topic' relative to the 'other investing' category.
You may or may not be pleased with the actions of those involved, but they are the main characters at this time, with the status of the spending bill. I don't find trashing of anyone in the postings, as you had noted.
  • Here is more details from the funding bill mess. Quote from the article.
Musk didn’t seem to think a government shutdown would have significant consequences for the country. He responded “YES” to a post that read, “Just close down the govt until January 20th. Defund everything. We will be fine for 33 days.” Another Musk post said a shutdown “doesn’t actually shut down critical functions.”

But while essential functions would continue during a shutdown, there are significant real-world effects: Other government employees will halt their day-to-day work and miss paychecks. While Social Security checks will go out and mail will be delivered, agency shutdowns cause massive lost productivity. A five-week shutdown from 2018 to 2019 caused the economy to lose about $3 billion, according to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.

Glad that I sold a good chuck of tech stocks in November this year.
  • kakistocracy in excelsis now
  • Clearly President musk is in charge and he hasn’t even be sworn in yet. But he better watch his back,,, chief of staff trump is not to be trusted.
  • One wonders what the military thinks of serving without a paycheck for 33 days. Does he really believe that they will be fine. I bet he does.

"They love me, and nobody loves them more than I do. It'll all be fine, believe me...." [dismissive gesture]

  • For most of us, I think our prior playbook still works. Namely, either do nothing or position yourself more defensively as the chaos unfolds/continues.

    kakistocracy, indeed. Banana Republic.
But the majority of voters actually voted-in the kakistocracy. Which is very telling as to the collective intelligence and moral backbone of those voters.

Left to themselves, like cattle turned loose upon the plains of Argentina, they had reverted to a style of life that appeared to be natural to them, a sort of ancestral pattern. Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult." ~George Orwell (Book: 1984)
