  • "we Americans have lost our sense of community"... American exceptionalism is no badge of honor but is a stain.

    Exactly.
  • Well said, @BenWP. Thank you.

Additional story Former CNN Reporter Brooke Baldwin claims: TV news companies view mass shootings as ‘ratings-generating revenue sources’

Excerpt- Leading executives at major cable newsrooms, Baldwin suggests … are driven by ratings and revenue figures rather than news value and empathy for victims when they decide how long and to what extent mass shootings and their aftermath should be covered. “After a week or 10 days, the outraged public grows tired of hearing about the carnage, loss, and inaction,” Baldwin writes in the piece headlined “Don’t Let the Cameras Turn Away.” “The audience starts to drop off. The ratings dip. And networks worry about their bottom line..”

Just sad, and even sadder because it's so predictable now, and nothing meaningful will be done. All we'll hear is the usual "thoughts and prayers" platitudes.
  • Too bad Ms. Jacinda Ardern isn't a US citizen and up for being POTUS.

Yup. We’ve come to expect and accept the inevitable. These tragedies temporarily bump airport delays, tornados, snow storms from the lead position of the nightly newscasts for perhaps a week. Then we forget, Hadn’t even realized California has had two of these instances in recent days until this story surfaced buried somewhere in today’s WSJ:

Excerpt - “At least seven people were killed in two related shootings in California on Monday, authorities said, only days after a separate mass shooting in the state killed 11 people. The related shootings Monday occurred at two agricultural nurseries near Half Moon Bay, a coastal city south of San Francisco …”

I’m haunted by a short story from Shirley Jackson first read in 1970. In it a community of mostly agrarian residents meets annually in the summer to hold an outdoor picnic, laugh, play, socialize and then draw lots - randomly selecting a member of of their community to be stoned to death. And, of course, no one objects or complains - except the victim who happens to be a young mother. The story provides no explanation for this strange custom - except that it’s always been this way.
