MikeW, funds both authors like include Vanguard Global Wellington/Wellesley. It was suggested to look at balanced/target funds with a value/global tilt. I'm not at Vanguard, and have not found better Global Balanced fund alternatives that have simil…
Hi Lynn, thanks again for another great article. I have learned from your writings to “try” and start making investment decisions more focused on future likelihoods vs only on past results (like looking at business cycles, Fed policy, etc)
Question…
Finishing up some quarterly rebalancing. Adding funds for inflation: PZRMX, BCASX. Adding funds for Value/Quality: GQEPX, CDC. Building cash from sales in CTFAX, SWAN, GIBLX, TMSRX. Added a bit to REMIX. Watching GLFOX.
Best of luck,
Rick
Hi Derf,
Out of curiosity, on Stockcharts, I compared CTFAX with my other more defensive holdings: GIBLX (my highest quality bond fund), along with TMSRX, REMIX and SWAN. No real surprises.

Hi Crash,
Great fund, moving in sync with growth/tech. Similar profile to BGAFX, which I own. I’m waiting for signs of bottom before adding, as it’s one of my long term holds.
Best of luck,
Rick
Question: is rebalancing the same as tinkering?
I feel it is not, but along with diversification, part of fundamental portfolio management.
Best of luck,
Rick
Bobpa, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I too hold MIOPX and BGAFX, both representing LG global, together around 15% of portfolio. I’m holding, for reasons Observant asked about above. Both are funds are highly rated, respected managers, and …
Thanks for posting! My favorite quote: The more they (average investors) do, the worse off their returns are. This is one of the reasons I've been slowly moving more into Allocation funds.
Best of luck,
Rick
I own BGAFX and MIOPX, have had for several years. My reasons for buying are still valid, so I am holding and will add/rebalance if this slide continues. Both are MFO Great Owl funds with proven management. They hold foreign and global high quality …
Glad to see more ideas posted. For 2022 I added REMIX to my portfolio, also added a conservative allocation fund TAIFX to taxable (really like its holdings, muni’s along with strong underlying equity funds). Last fall I reduced my growth global fund…
David, thanks for posting your research on REMIX. I compared REMIX to FMSDX, looks good...see https://stockcharts.com/freecharts/perf.php?REMIX,FMSDX&n=455&O=011000
Would love to hear Lynn Bolin's take on this fund as well. I am continuing …
I use TMSRX as an alt, and watchlist BAMBX, MERFX, ARBIX, MNWAX. ARBIX would be my next choice based on its consistency and risk profile. I did like the write up on BAMBX, thanks for sharing!
My major remaining bond holding is GIBLX, keeping as a b…
Yes, great comments everyone! Thanks! SVARX looks interesting, will do more research.
I have an offense equity sleeve, into which I add during sell offs. But I feel my bond and alt allocations are not the place for risk holdings. Being defensive …
Lynn, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, especially on GAVAX. I look forward to reading your commentary on non correlated assets. Your articles have really helped me, and I’m using MFO screeners more and more. I feel indebted.
I struggle wit…
Thanks hank and derf! Appreciate your responses, and just to clarify the post a bit... I may want to add another alt fund to complement TMSRX, so I’ll check out the ones you mentioned. Also looking for thoughts on GAVAX, especially comparing it to C…
Hi Fred,
You inquired about GAVAX, here is a link to David Snowball's review:

FYI: here is the performance of the funds I mentioned, along with FIKFX and VASIX, during the March swoon. See this chart:

Hi Fred,
Over the past 3 months, I’ve been slowly evolving my low volatility equity and interest sensitive bond funds and cash, to more defensive funds. I followed with interest Lynn Bolin’s many articles in MFO and SA, and just became a MFO premium…
Lynn, thanks for your reply and insights. I look forward to seeing your continuing articles as we move forward.
SMA3, I have the same caution with the Hussman funds, but have RPAR (I believe Lynn wrote about this ETF) on my watchlist.
Best of luc…
Hi Lynn, Thank you for your body of work on the premise of making portfolios more defensive for the coming time period. Each article (MFO or SA) presents helpful information and analyses as you explore non-traditional ways of reducing risk. I've add…
Another timely post. I am looking at more "defensive" funds as places to invest monies from equity rebalancing, as well as an alternative for some bond $$$. I'm using SWAN, and TMSRX thus far, considering others from Charles Lynn's list for next cho…
Thank you again, Lynn. Your comments raise good points, especially keeping an eye on risk adjusted returns as a way to compare funds.
Much appreciated,
Best regards,
Rick
Thanks, Charles Lynn for your comments. Your series of articles have been really helpful as I evolve my portfolio.
I still am looking for help comparing the so-called low volatility factor/funds with these more defensive fund ideas. I am wondering i…
Carew, thanks for the new regime info on CTFAX. I would have preferred it stay more flexible, rather than the 50% floor. GAVAX is looking more appealing.
Best regards,
Rick
Thanks for your replies, JD and wxman.
JD: I do like both SWAN and DRSK, may add DRSK next. In terms of alts, I already added TMSRX.
Wxman: I also think VMVFX has some positives going for it, esp. tilts towards small/mid caps, and its global port…
Interesting to see the performance of these defensive funds over the past one week. Quite a variance! Some of the one week performances I follow, per my watchlist on Morningstar:
SWAN -3.62
DRSK -1.22
NUSI -7.29
PHDG -7.61
SGOL +.32
TAIL +.07
TMSRX…
Bought today, chunks of SCHD, VIGI, MTUM and SWAN, all in my taxable brokerage account.
Beginning to DCA proceeds from home sale, still lots of cash to allocate in coming months.
Best regards,
Rick
Hi Rforno, yes, very I’m intrigued by NUSI, also DRSK. I think the focus articles on TMSRX make it attractive too. Any thoughts on best fit for a taxable account(not looking for income)? I’m having trouble understanding how options distributions are…
Keep MFO an investment site, close down the politics. Social media bombards is with political pollution, and I’ve always found this site to be a safe haven for posting investment ideas in a more accepting and less critical manner. If I want to read …
