Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
The COVID-19 pandemic marked the failure of Federalism at the worse possible moment ! And yes, unfortunately the US is not New Zealand or South Korea !
+1 Crash Yes-36 of the 37 OECD countries have universal healthcare(although Mexico,Colombia and Greece probably wouldn't be your top choices) Non OECD countries like Uruguay and Costa Rica also have it. One guess as to the outlier !
Barcharts website has a screener that shows the top mutual funds for the last five days, as well as other periods of time. A separate search showed that MERFX and HMEAX were both positive for the last 5 days, while BALPX lost -.33% .
+1 Lewis Braham Very succinct and accurate summary of the libertarian mindset. Apparently, their utopia would be Somalia or Afghanistan, where they would be completely free from any functioning government !
If you're looking at value funds, I would stick to etfs so that you can ,if necessary, sell quickly without incurring any transaction fees. For mcv, DON and VOE look like good choices.
I'm guessing the college in Utah, since Grandeur Peak is based in Utah, but the notice assumes you know which one. But you're right-these colleges should be referred to as Westminster College(UT) , for example. And I guess we're just supposed to kn…
ben +1 Vanguard has great funds(for me) but the website is clunky and buying and selling funds is tedious. E-trade features Vanguard fund purchases with no transaction fee, but who knows if that will continue after the Morgan Stanley merger. If Sch…
I found JIG while looking for a foreign growth etf similar to VWILX. JSEAX is classified as foreign large blend per the Morningstar Style Box, while JIG shows as large cap growth. I'm sure there are better choices for large cap growth but I must ha…
IIRC, PREMX invests in EMB issued in USD. TRECX may be EM corporate bonds issued in USD. So far, it has outpaced both PREMX and PRELX. Looks interesting so I'll buy a small position at Schwab where the fund minimum is $100.
IMHO, the GOP fringe element has achieved ascendancy due to the rise of political talk radio. The Fairness Act was repealed in 1987, paving the way in 1988 for Rush Limbaugh to emerge, first in Sacramento and eventually nationwide. His toxic brew o…
Is there an etf equivalent to VWILX ? I couldn't find one, so I'm starting a small spec play in JIG . Limited volume, so I don't know if Fidelity or Schwab will process buys of this etf.
sma3 I appreciated your detailed response and I think most MFOers will as well. Your fact-based reasoned scientific analysis of a well-hyped treatment/cure for COVID was sorely needed for a mutual fund blog deluged by flimsy unsubstantiated "eviden…
George Soros called me and said buy a 1000 shares of GLD etf (using a market order) at 10:45 am EDT on 10/7/2020. Said the trade will be good until 1/20/2021. He's calling me back later to advise me as to which model of the Bentley Bentayga I sho…
After selling some of my funds in March/April, I tiptoed back into the market with some minor positions at Schwab: OLGAX 41% return MGGPX 40% return. If I see my profit melting away, I'll sell these without a second thought.
For me MERFX and HMEAX are long term plays. If I had to pick one, go with MERFX. You can see the funds return at Schwab, including the best and worse 3 month performances. I've owned other M/A funds that worked until they didn't: GADVX GAKAX VARAX A…
Or maybe the liberal blue states could merge with Canada: for example, the three Pacific Coast states or the 6 New England states joined by NY NJ MD and DE. MN would be another possibility as well.
@BenWP Good catch on the MS CEF to OEF conversion. It's a profitable and very satisfying trade whenever a CEF trading at a discount converts to an OEF trading at NAV! Of course, I have no clue how to identify these conversions ahead of time.
I've been skeptical of the rally myself. I've been using stock etf's to participate so I can sell promptly, if necessary, without incurring any oem transaction fees.
+1 You're absolutely right! This election isn't a choice-it's a rescue mission. No time for progressives to be choosy-wish the progressives at the political blog I visit understood that!
