Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
@Tarwheel - Right there. Objective. PRFRX not around or at least I cannot find data for 2008 time period. I'm taking a wild guess, but perhaps Vanguard Total Bond Market index came out well during the same interval of time. If I had seen that I woul…
@Sven - Why do you think I started this post :-). I know it's bad.
My problem is when I see "floating rate", I don't look at portfolio. What I hear is that it will yield me the prevailing interest rate.
Now if someone is selling me an S&P 50…
@msf You said: "It is best used for the cash portion of one's asset allocation, not for daily expenses"
First, I'm responsible for my own decisions and I'm not blaming anyone else. However, when we put it the way you put it, what should one conclud…
@MikeM and @expatsp you are right. However, RPHYX *was* touted as a cash substitute. For RSIVX I can take 100% of the blame.
Looking on the positive side, this market has taught me 2 things.
Don't effing buy what you don't understand. I still wante…
@catch22 Actually I would challenge the notion. It is not secret I am bond challenged. I've also mentioned 007 doesn't know jack s*** - stirred tastes better than shaken.
When I buy bond funds I HAVE to trust the manager. This the reason I seldom b…
There will be a bailout. If not any industry like airlines or in service sector, then some financial institution. It is hard for me to believe some investment bank hasn't been caught on the wrong side of the trade. Admittedly it's because as I have …
In this stressful time, which cries for serious and thoughtful information exchange, why MFO is being cluttered with garbage like this is completely beyond my comprehension. It echoes the performance from the very top of the present administration: …
Down another 17% today.
So, clearly, everybody running for door (including me) and no willing buyers.
Extraordinary 5 years, until it wasn't, like Mona posted.
Really, really hard couple days.
Oh, boy! Am I glad I didn't invest! I was going to in…
I asked this question before. I've moved half my assets from "prime" into "treasury" MM funds. I would have moved all, but honestly I'm not even sure what's safe anymore. Everything is going to the dogs.
@Old_Joe I don't think going into cash is an idea only for old people. There is no reason younger people should not be smart, is there?
I feel good I protected my retirement accounts by "panicking" right about the time I received the first unsolici…
Few years back I recall someone bringing a bill to congress which would make it illegal for members of Congress to trade on insider information. The bill was soundly defeated.
First, the fact that someone even had to bring such a bill to Congress. …
@msf April 15, May 15, June 15, July 15. Wonder why you think this is not delayed by 90 days given each month in the middle has 30-31 days
Regardless my confusion is whether I can wait till July 15 to send check or I can wait till July 15 to FILE …
@msf thank you!
I think I have two safer choices at Vanguard - Vanguard Federal Money Market and Vanguard US Treasuries - the latter probably leaves nothing to imagination and what I should go with.
EDIT: At Schwab, TRP I'm in "Government Money Ma…
They should have waited till Monday. THEN if they did it, might have stabliized the markets. Trump pullign the strings no doubt. Fed just used up the last Trump card. Pun intended
@msf I know about this problem with Merrill and complained to them several times. Yes, they cannot freakin do math because they treat mutual fund purchases like stock purchases which are seldom fractional (but their math is correct). However they a…
@Crash This was the reason I exited E*Trade and Ameritrade. If you do not challenge any financial transaction within 60 days, your are sh*t out of luck unless you want to go to court. The ONE reason to go to NTF platforms is for simplifying your lif…
FYI. I bought VLAAX and VALIX each a $1000 investment in TIAA. Then I bought $100 in each. At the same time I also bought $100 in BEGIX and BOPIX. All show up NTF and I was never charged any commission.
Now I see for EACH of my $100 x 4 investments…
This is what is going to happen. As soon as you sell Oakmark funds, they will start outperforming.
IMO stop worrying about beating the market, category or being performance leader. Focus on WHEN to buy before WHAT to buy.
If you ever think an act…
It's 1K, but you have to purchase direct. Thanks for reminding me. This has been on my shopping list for a while. I'm going to track it now. It's holding up really well.
@johnN I messed up with FSENX. Well, you can say I messed up with bunch of Fido Select funds. However, I promised myself I'm not going panic for 10 years. We'll see what happens 2030.
@Old_Joe I think I'm probably as guilty as anyone looking for funds "that hold cash". Execution is important. An FPA Crescent has done this well. Intrepid hasn't. I have IVWAX as well. It really depends I guess.
And don't forget PVCMX. Cinnamond ke…
My advice is going to be different. Because personal life experiences have made me paranoid.
The saying "don't put all your eggs in one basket" universally applies. Never think ONE, think at least TWO. Based on current form I would be comfortable w…
No I think they are different funds.
I sold ICMAX and ICMCX and DCA'ed into existing VSIAX, ARTLX, ARTQX instead. All orders entered few minutes back. Mr. Snowball's article alerted me to the fact these "active" and "intrepid" (sic) in spite of hav…
@TheShadow
At the time I was deciding I bought CIPDX, since I already owned CIPSX and CIPMX. I just worry given current market situation, Champlain might close CIPDX because it doesn't have much assets.
Sssh...don't tell anyone or more people will…
