No problem Ted, and just so you know I am not meaning to be confrontational (I know how the tone of Internet discussions can be misinterpreted). The 3 fund portfolio you listed are all stock funds. We have been in a 5 year bull market, so of course …
Scott, I agree that rates might not go up this year, but I'm thinking 2016 or 2017. I agree that floating rate funds could be a good place. I think dividend paying stocks could get hurt, just as REITs as you mentioned. It all could wind up being buy…
Ted, I was only referring to the period that yields went up during the 3 or so months of whichever year it was (it was during the last couple of years), not the entire year. During that period, both stocks and bonds went down. I could be mistaken, m…
Diversification limited to just stocks and bonds might have worked well during a period of decreasing interest rates. We are now at low interest rates and may be in for a period of rising interest rates, at least in the foreseeable future. Was it th…
Ted, I am not completely sure if I understand what you mean. I regard a fund that invests in commodities and currencies as a diversifier, unless you don't believe diversifying is a good strategy. To each his own.
I don't think anyone is advocating putting a big part of one's portfolio in managed futures. It is just another diversifier. I have owned PQTIX, which represents 3% of my portfolio, for about a year and it has done well. I am considering selling it …
Thanks for bringing this fund to our attention. It certainly has had great returns.
Scott makes some good points.
It looks like Equinox has 3 managed futures funds. According to the annual report, Equinox Chesapeake Strategy Fund (EQCHX, up 12.6%…
Thanks for the info. I like having a portion of my portfolio in these go-anywhere global macro type funds. I currently have money MBAAX, AZDDX, WMCNX, HCOYX, and ERMAX that fit in or approximates this category. I will see how EICOX performs the next…
We have been in a 5 year bull market, so long-short funds are not going to perform as well as long only funds in that environment. We will be in a better position to judge them when the market turns south for a sustained time.
. HCOYX went up 2.98% today. It's top 3 holdings are Argentina bonds, accounting for 17% of its portfolio. Was the big rise in NAV due to what is going on in Argentina? I would have thought it would cause the fund to go down. Or did this happen afte…

I don't completely understand managed futures, other than it goes long and short various commodities and currencies, so it is at least somewhat similar to a more "traditional" long - short fund (although I believe there is more to managed futures t…
I sold it 3 months ago. I was concerned about asset bloat affecting its performance. Asset bloat or bad macro moves, either way it was performing poorly and I lost confidence in the fund. It was a tough decision, as I have had it for several years,…
While it's not described as such (and oddly, not in that category on M*), this would appear to be simply a managed futures fund and not a real great one. The last few years have not been that great for managed futures as a strategy, but - as I've di…
I max out my Roth IRA every year, and currently contribute up to the maximum company match in my traditional 401k (I have the option to contribute to a Roth 401K). As it stands my total retirement accounts are about one-third in Roth IRA, and two-th…
Robeco's new global long-short fund just opened to retail investors if you want to consider a replacement (I believe the other Robeco long-short funds are now closed). Robeco is one of the few fund families I trust in this space. Good luck with what…
Wow, I'm glad I got out of this fund about a year ago. I haven't been paying attention to this fund since I got out, so it looks like I made the right move. I also recently got out of PMHIX. I could be wrong, but these two funds seem like mostly lon…
Scott,
Thanks for listing various infrastructure investments. I might be interested in TOLLX or GLFOX, although I'm wondering if I might be late to the game by initiating positions in them now. Since they may be grouped in with the utility/higher …
You are welcome Andy. I feel WAFMX and HLMOX complement each other well. WAFMX seems more conservative (stresses high quality, has 44% in consumer staples), whereas HLMOX seems to venture out more sector wise.
AndyJ,
I am guessing you are looking at Morningstar's data? According to Harding Loevner's website, HLMOX has 78 holdings.

I own HLMOX, as well as WAFMX…
Thanks for all your feedback. I wasn't sure if I was jumping the gun in my thoughts about if the AUM was affecting it's performance, but it looks like I'm not alone with this concern. If it is the AUM, it is a shame how the managers of a once fine …
I have owned WAFMX since close to inception and have owned HLMOX for about 9 months or so. I will just say that they have been among my steadiest and less volatile funds. I know that sounds surprising for a category that would seem the opposite, bu…
David, I know Global Reach is a combination of their 3 other funds (EM, Global, International). From any of your conversations with Grandeur Peak do you happen to know if Global Reach weights equally between EM, and the stocks they hold in global/in…
Added to DRSLX and initiated a position in RCRYX. Will likely sell PCARX next week and put it into WMCNX. I am waiting for BGLSX to become accessible at my brokerage and will initiate a position in it. I am considering selling MWCRX, will give it a …
It looks like a good performing long-short fund. Performance was marginally better than ARLSX and BPRRX (which I believe contain mostly US stocks), but by eyeballing it, BDMIX may have done it with less volatility. PMHIX and LSOFX performed better, …
I recently acquired a few long-short funds (and I have had MFLDX for a few years). The reason why is that I would normally keep about 40-50% exposure outside of the stock market. That is my comfort level. Most of the money not in stock mutual funds …
You could consider MSMLX. It is small cap, but of course only invests in Asia (I think it is currently open). Some other possible options, both by Wasatch: WAFMX, which invests in frontier emerging markets (is run by co-manager of WAEMX Laura Geritz…
