Lynn,
Thank you so much. I am planning on a 3-year ladder since I am a year away from retirement. Lots of spreadsheet work to calculate the income replacement needed. This ladder will create a steady income stream. So thank you for all your help.
I moved back to high quality bond funds this year. Some of which you covered in the SA article. For now, I will stay with agency bonds to the bond ladder. I will pick active managers for corporate bonds.

If I may digest from the original post on EM small caps for a moment. There are still few EM opportunities still available in larger caps. I use NWFFX for a number of years as a lower risk EM fund. The broader mandate allow companies that derive m…
What we are seeing is natural immunity is gives you 50% protection. How about how does it reduce the severity? Does this diminish over time? WTF knows. How does Omicron impact the unvaccinated?
If it gets as deadly as Delta, similar result as tha…
High yield bonds are the ones with positive gain this year while high quality bonds are in red. Investors like to invest where the can make money. Last Friday it was the reverse as the high quality bonds swing to positive. The market is up on Mon…
In November Commentary, Professor Snowball wrote a very compelling article on investing in China. Lynn Bolin also posted several emerging market fund and ETF with smaller exposure to China.
Pretty busy on reporting on this event but not much details. There was discussion that Omicron is not nearly as virulent comparing to Delta. Killing off the host too quickly does not allow time for the virus to spread. The symptoms you described ar…
@hank,
This past Friday was ugly. Mining stocks including NGLOY took quite a hit. GOLD took a dive too.
In next several weeks we will learn more on test results on "Omicron". There was flash of fear reflecting the consequences of February 2020…
When the Alpha variant mutated to the most contagious form, Delta, there was concern that it may evade the mRNA-based vaccines. But it did not. Now a more severe mutation took place and only testing will verify the potential consequences. Since the…
POAGX is closed to new investors for several years. Count yourself lucky if you already an investor. The other two PRIMECAP funds, Odyssey Growth Fund, POGRX and Odyssey Stock fund, POSKX are still open.
These days I spend more time reading many sources so that I get additional information. Agree that Forsyth’s articles are short on details, but his argument is logical. I also read Schwab, Seeking Alpha and others that are posted here. MFO monthly …
Vanneck semiconductor ETF, SMH, contains the key stocks ranging from semiconductor processing (nanometer-scale lithography) to manufacturing microprocessor chips. ASML is the third holding (7%) of the ETF. This year it has out-paced the tech sector …
@Crash, you need to decide of what you risk tolerance is, and 2% small cap allocation is not unreasonable. If the forecast is correct, bond return will be subdue in the next several years. Income investors need to look beyond bonds in order to comp…
One thing I appreciate the online version of Barrons is the discussion tread following each article and they represent quite a diverse view that often differs from the author. This is something not available in the printed paper. Prior that that I…
Thank you again. Similar forecast on future return have been posted but Schwab provided detail analysis that others lack. What can income investors do with negative returns in coming years?
By the way, I congratulate you to find time to take mor…
@WABAC, you are enjoying life and that is most important after retirement. The ability to start at 62 takes planning ahead. Many of my friends took their at their full retirement age; few took them at 62 due to health reason. My family longevity h…
Like @Observant1 said, talk with TRP first before starting the transfer. You need to open a brokerage account first (if you don’t already have one) and have TRP help fill out the form. You still need to print out the form and mail them.
If TRP c…
Good article from Kathy Jones again. Not sure why but there are seven missing figures in it.
My bond funds are having hard time already this year. There will be sizable headwind going into 2022 with several rate hikes.
@crash, I exited PRSNX …
I have had good luck (and speed) to transfer asset to/out of Vanguard. Typically, it takes about 10 days from start to finish. The most time consuming part is having to mail in the form to Vanguard. T. Rowe Price requires signature guarantee from…
That footage is from awhile back. Today Peter Lynch is 77 years old. My father invested with him and Magellan used to carry 3% front load. Time has changed for sure.
Grandeur Peak closed funds are "hard" closed to all existing investors who use intermediary services, i.e. brokerages. One can get around that by transfer the closed fund to Grandeur Peak and go from there. I believe Wasatch funds have the same pol…
You are highlighting Fidelity’s best active managers. Can you imagine what these funds would perform with a smaller asset, say 10% of the current level?
He has a sizable team co-managing the fund. They have been running the day to day operation while hw was on sabbatical leave. Think the transitioning should be seamless. One concern is the large asset base and the fund has changed from a small ca…
@Roy, you brought up excellent point. We consolidated our brokerage and mutual accounts a number years ago for ease of tracking to two large brokerages. So we have to reconsider this announcement from TRP since we already invested in a number of th…
Very insightful for sure. I went back to view her YouTube interviews in the last 10 years and they are consistently informative. Toward the end she picked Cathy Woods’s ETF, AKKK as an example of innovation that drive this economy.
Thank you. Gold is trending upward this week as inflation increases; announced 6.1% this morning.
Not a hedge but letting the cash invested in VTIP and bank loan funds.
Waffling is a nice way to say being evasive . I got the same feeling that Doll talked around the subject without giving details on his strategies. One thing for sure that performance does not guarantee future outcomes.
Don’t know when Micheal Kass’s interview was made. Seemed to be dated and overly bullish on China in light of what is happening this year. Good insight in November’s commentaries from Professor Snowball and Lynn Bolin.
Agree. Also the company matching also helps quite a bit, sometime in the range of 4% or more. By the time I entered the work force, define pension plan already disappeared. So the burden of saving for retirement was on the workers who have to lea…
Concur with davfor’s assessment. Having the Fed and other foreign Fed entities participating in (or as part of) the stock market is unprecedented. Will see how this tapering plays out in the near term.
Roth IRA used to have $2,000 limit when it started in 1998. Many people don’t have jobs with 401K) and 403(b) plans. How can one save enough for retirement with $6,000 and 1,000 catch-up, per year?
