Lynn,
Thank you so much. I am planning on a 3-year ladder since I am a year away from retirement. Lots of spreadsheet work to calculate the income replacement needed. This ladder will create a steady income stream. So thank you for all your help.
I moved back to high quality bond funds this year. Some of which you covered in the SA article. For now, I will stay with agency bonds to the bond ladder. I will pick active managers for corporate bonds.

Blackrock's iShares ETFs can be traded for FREE at Fidelity. But why when their ERs are several time higher than those of the equivalent ETFs at Vanguard.
What went wrong with this shop that once considered the best of the best in the bond world.
Bill Gross has been lagging his peers for several years. Quietly his rival, Jeff Gundlach, is outpacing Bill for the last several years.
Concur with most comments on Wintergreen fund. High ER is a real drag on total return unless the fund manages to outperform its index over long period. I invest with Michael Price when he ran the Mutual Series funds. He is a decent and serviceabl…
During the height of 2008 financial crisis Hasenstab bought Irish government bonds while everyone are frozen in fear. This is typical of Hasenstab's contrarian approach. It paid off handsomely years after as Ireland recovers.
Here we are in a …
That is one of reason that many well respected managers own sizable Berkshire Hathaway stock in their portfolios including Bruce Berkowitz of Fairholme fund.
More noise from traders. Short term pullback presents good entry points. Given the aging demographics health care sector will likely to continue to do well in the long run.
Always good to see Dan Fuss. This interview is particular informative of his investment. By the way, his former protege, Kathleen Gaffney now managing Eaton Vance Bond using similar strategy but with much smaller asset base.
Considering the sheer size of the fund it is doing pretty well among the large cap growth funds. It would be difficult to move in and out different sectors quickly. Certainly not my top choice even though it is available in my 401k plan for many y…
Matter is a whole lot more complicated than it seems. Components used in cellular phones are neither standardized nor readily available. Not exactly is that is a reasonable comparison to PCs.

slick, Your balance allocation is doing very well. More earning report is coming in next several weeks. Hope they are better than what JP Morgan reported.
My father has just turned 70 and is about to
I'm glad that he feels like he is in good hands, but I'm concerned that the advisor is spreading him too thin to be useful (for commissions?) and the fee seems excessive
since he is already concerned th…
Successful investors save regularly and routinely.
Good reminder - "good habits". Many failed to contribute to the retirement account (401(K), 403(b) and etc) even to level to get the maximum company match (i.e. free money). Same goes for saving f…
Why are his funds perform so poorly? I would invest in only in bonds and cans if I am so bearish. By the wat, Micheal Hassenstab of Templeton Global Bond and Global Total Return funds, also holds a PhD in economic. Certainly you don't hear much…
That is a good one. Over using mobile devices has lead to increased neck injury incidents. That is including falling into water fountains (someone posted an UTube clip) while texting.
@Sven
Ballast is ballast in an overall portfolio, eh?
Our house's greatest concern is when Fuss leaves and who will continue to manage PIMIX / PONDX at Pimco.
One can't complain about bond performance from either fund during 2013 or 2011 when the…
We use Window 7 both at home and work. Also we use Mac, especially our kids! Over time, we will migrate completely to Mac.
XP was decent OS, but it is badly dated and vulnerable to hacking. Really tried with anti-virus update and all.
Scott Burns had been accused of spinning in a previous thread to make a point. This is another example.
The tax isn't a marginal rate on the income but a consequence of the tax deductibility of SS income going away as total income increases. Scott …

Downside protection is not all that great with these funds in challenging environment for bonds such as 2013. Same goes for those "risk pa…
The $1500 minimum makes it sound like they're creating a share class that will not participate on NTF platforms and will pass along the savings to the investor. I recall reading somewhere that Fidelity charges something like 40 basis points per yea…
Nice...investors pulling money out of emerging market equity and bond funds is a good sign. Time to gradually plow new money back in.
Given the sitution at Russia now, there are likely better buying opportunities ahead. Key is to find skillful man…
One will almost certainly out-perform the other, and they will probably be about the same. 10+ years is enough time to smooth out the bumps.
I invest in both. In the near term, FMIJX is more likely to do better with smaller asset base.
