Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
Regarding WAEMX, if I'm not mistaken it is currently closed to new investors. Wasatch does a good job of closing funds when assets rise above what they consider to be managable levels with respect to doing right by their shareholders.
Patience must be a HUGE virtue at Oakmark - see WaMu, JPM, Dell.... Admittedly that's Nygren and not Herro but I've got to wonder if the same thinking applies.
*IMPORTANT UPDATE* Somehow I got logged off today even though I did not turn off or restart my computer, I did not exit IE and start it up again and my browser is not set to delete cookies.

More on Fidelity's $75 transaction fee - as Investor and others have mentioned it is a one-shot, buy in fee. There are no fees for selling the fund. From what I understand Schwab charges a fee going in and out which together equals or exceeds Fideli…
I don't care for E*Trades idea of customer service so I dropped them years ago. I switched to Scottrade for the $7 trading fee but they don't reinvest dividends in individual equities. I can't see paying TD Ameritrade a $10 trading commission when F…
I am a little surprised that one of the oldest, reliable stalwarts in this category, JMCVX, was not included in your initial list and also, as Investor kind of mentioned, skipping over the ETF arena. Care to say why?
Unless he is a glutton for punishment I would avoid dealing with rental property at nearly all costs. As one involved in the building/remodeling/renovation/renewal trade I can tell you that the housing crash has left a high percentage of homes more …
Regarding the $75 purchase price to acquire a Vanguard fund at Fidelity - you can always buy the fund directly at Vanguard and then transfer the fund to your Fidelity account. Thereafter additional purchases into the Vanguard fund will only cost you…
So the original article was written in February and main stream media, politicians, political parties etc., have done nothing with it so far. Deduction: since it makes sense and the middle class will benefit the most then it's something we can never…
I agree with Heathbob although it might be said that the managers were only partially responsible for the record at Thornburg TIBIX. None of us know what part they may have played in that fund. However, I like the concept of the income builder type …
Reply to @hank: Yeah I know what you're saying, convenience included. However, and this is just MHO, like having all of my financial accounts online I just can't come to grips with the possibilities of temper tantrums from my electronic devices.

While believing that the cost of both hardcover and paperback books have gotten way out of line I fail to see why the e-book version of the same should cost a whole lot less. The author, editor, publisher etc still deserve the same amount of pay for…
Scott (and others): I didn't lend commentary to my selections because I feel that everyones reasons for owning any one individual equity position will vary. What I will say w/o regard to any one particular selection is that I have developed a busine…
Agreed, very, very interesting indeed. As soon as governments (read politicians) find or figure a way to make themselves and their cronies tons and bunches of money off such a project we'll be on our way. Until then plutonium production will remain …
Is it just me? It seems like almost every time someone poses the discussion question regarding Broker 'X' experiences it is invariably accompanied by the followup query wondering about the Annuity 'Y' they are recommending. Makes me wonder.
I know …
@Zenergy - I did not. During my mutual fund phase I was looking for capital appreciation and more importantly momentum in the funds I chose. The funds that I hold today that do provide an income stream are TIBIX, DLTNX. RNDLX and HIX. I suppose one …
Less and less mutual funds as time goes on. I used to juggle 25-30 at a time but have weeded most of them out for individual equities and preferred shares. Just looking for that constant income stream...
I would say that Off-topic topics should be of an investing or general market nature that do not specifically mention (pertain perhaps) to mutual funds. Discussions about equities, gold, oil, nuclear power, annuities, insurance and so on might fall …
David and andrei - I checked on that as well after reading David's discussion and see no compelling reason to change. However, I was looking for one because of the 3-yr OAKBX downdraft that David mentioned. I have been putting new mutual fund money …
Rono and I have been saying for quite some time that the 'official' announced and reported inflation rate is a joke, especially as it pertains to the average joe who has to feed & clothe their family and get them from here to there.

It looks a lot like going to court - whichever side has the most money wins. For a quick and simple example check out celebrity(?) court appearances vs. ordinary people appearances for the exact same offense.

Tortise Energy Partners and Kayne Anderson are a couple which offer a trio of MLP-type cef's. There are a few others.
Personally I hold the individual MLP's and trusts myself and pay myself the e.r.. However, I have held one or more of the Kayne A…
Hey mister, glad to see that life and retirement are suiting you well.
So what is it that you're looking for from natural gas, just a general rise in the cost per cubic foot or greater utilization possibly from vehicles. The former may eventually h…

Zen and Now - I have not. Should I? I suppose I can look it up on Amazon just as easily and I will. I will also check out your extreme adventure recommendation. I neglected to mention that I have recently finished "Between a Rock and a …
