Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
There are good companies, Costco and Trader Joe’s come to mind, implying that not all capitalist men are nasty.
@hawleyl Thank you! And small businesses, as well....where the owners often take ALL of the risk.
@DanHardy with a dash of cronyism thrown in the mix. It upsets me when people equate small business with big business. Seems like small business has no voice in our government.
That's understandable. True socialism is better than what we have today. Objectivism + Capitalizing Profits + Sociailizing Losses. The problem with Socialism is allegedly the lack of motivation to innovate. Capitalism would fix that except, "greed …
I don't like the "nanny state", but I do think many people are not able to control their spending/saving and the employer enforced methods would definitely help. One of my sons works for his father and he's on that plan ;) But, on the other hand, …

I am so going to post more Onion stuff, just to get such sober and clueless response. This has been a major hoot in a grim batch of days.

@LewisBraham I'm not disagreeing with you...just stating that the wealthy/well-connected have an advantage in our justice system. And if you want to drag the Koch brothers into the discussion, be sure to drag George Soros and trial lawyers in, as …
I would hate to be tried in a privatized court system where justice went to the highest bidder!
I agree with most everything you wrote...except for the above. Seems like the wealthy/well-connected have a big advantage here...OJ Simpson comes to m…
Wow...and I thought it was just a silly article! I better go back and re-read it.........nope, still just a silly article. I hope we don't lose our sense(s) of humor in our country...lest we become like those nitwits that carried out the Charlie H…
when the market went way down a few months ago, that one day MCXIX went up 9%
Yes...and that day was followed by a precipitous drop :( I find it very difficult to determine when to add to my position. I was going to add after the aforementioned d…
@Joe I have a small position in this fund. It is a roller coaster ride...not for the faint of heart. I think the results are driven primarily by volatility...it definitely doesn't move in lockstep with the market.
a hypothetical question for @msf: If someone had a $10 million nest egg invested totally in tax-free munis...no other income...would he/she qualify for and O'care subsidy?
@little5bee:
So 2008 was the golden age BO messed up (caution, wit ahead):

@davidrmoran how did you construe that from my comment? No, of course not...but for someone as data-driven as yourself, the NYT article seems a bit lacking...like astrology-driven or something.
@Dex My bf has a seasonal part-time job as a tax preparer with an accounting firm. No benefits (as a retired automotive engineer, he doesn't need them), but great pay. Only works from Feb through April, with some "on-call" time during other months.
@Dex I don't know all the details of your situation, but I believe Lowe's and Starbucks provide health care benefits to part-time workers. There are probably other companies, as well.
Thanks - that gave me a chuckle and if you knew my net worth…
I'm not working so I have to estimate, interest, dividends and my small pension for next year now.

@VintageFreak I sold a long time ago. I think I had a (very) slight gain....which was like a loss, considering what the market itself did during that time frame.
Within a few hours Kitces responded, to my surprise, not common for a financial columnist
On behalf of @LewisBraham, I take exception with your statement. ;)
I have a friend who is an insurance agent in Iowa. He told me that Iowa Wellmark BCBS's experience in 2014-2015 is that people signed up, got insurance, got medical treatment and then cancelled their insurance. BCBS was out about $10 million in Iowa…

Costco has the prices up for 2016. My Aetna plan is the same price as Aetna quoted...to the penny. If I move, however, the Aetna plan is $50/month more, but I can get a Humana plan for only $20/month more. That seems strange, because I think the …

@msf My question is basically...does one have to be subsidized in order to get a tax credit eligible plan? Can someone paying full fare (me) get a tax credit? If so, it might actually be worth it for me to have higher premiums and get a tax credi…
@msf On the Costco.com health insurance site, the "tax credit eligible" plans...which I assume are the subsidized plans...cost considerably more than the non-subsidized plans. What is the reasoning behind this?
@davidrmoran Maybe Obamacare should be Costcocare. Probably would be run a lot more efficiently and economically. Just kidding....I know Costco has a demographic/economic advantage. But, perhaps as an advisor?

@bee WHAT!! That is bad news...they were quite competitive with Aetna. I agree...let's keep this thread going and help each other out. The more people we have digging for info, the better.
@msf aetna doesn't have the 2016 rates up yet on its website. The only reason I got notification early is because I am up for renewal. I've checked Costco and ehealthinsurance, as well, and the new rates aren't posted at those sites, either. Shou…
