It should be noted that a Bill Miller’s Legg Mason Fund lost 2/3rds of its value by the end of 2008. His investors fled the fund. It may have been a lifetime investment opportunity for Bill, but he destroyed a lot of his investors’ wealth.
in past bear markets, there was no need to try and buy the declines. The market kept making new lows. If you waited until the market was stable again, and even months into recovery, you had plenty of years and upside to profit from.
Hank: I lose sleep when I get up to 70% invested, or so. But Lynch recommended staying 100% invested. He claimed his Fidelity aides did the math, and you’d be better off staying fully invested. If memory serves, he wrote that one would get at least …
Simon, Thank you. 4 models is great idea. I think the biggest mistakes I’ve made over the years was to become too cautious and move some of my funds to cash. During the Great Recession, I reread one of Peter Lynch’s books. He wrote a line that helpe…
For what it’s worth, I believe the strength of this site is the focus and analysis on great funds. Best article was the recent list of great owl funds with strong recent gains. David’s advice to me re my Meridian Funds was very helpful. However, the…
Andrew Foster is another manager who went out on his own, with a lot of hype, and failed to match the performance of the fund he left. MAPIX is up 56% since March 2012; SFGIX is up 35%. For the last five years, MAPIX is up 18.43 %; SFGIX is up 6.51%…
David: Your list of Great Owl Funds that are also on the Honor Roll is very helpful. I’m happy to report that I own 4 of them. I’ve created a chart list so that I can monitor them. Thank you.
In California, any argument that stocks are the better investment, falls mostly on deaf ears. I’ve tried to convince friends and relatives that over the long term stocks are superior. No luck. The reason is obvious. Homes that were purchased for $30…
I subscribe to stockcharts.com. It gives me the ability to chart my mutual funds in numerous ways. For example, I can set up a chart that shows several funds performances in percentage terms. I can vary the start and end dates. This gives me a visua…
I gave up on the Mutual Series funds two years ago, and transferred to the Meridian Funds and T Rowe Price. Michael Price is gone, and so is the magic. Get over it. (And please don’t remind me about David Winters and his Wintergreen Fund.)
And yet, if you have a favored child or grandkid, wouldn’t you do whatever you could to help him or her get the very best college education? My grandmother set up a trust that paid for my college/law school, and I created a 521 account for my grandk…
Once again, gold looks like it might start a new uptrend and be hot again (according to a number of technical analysis I read). So I've put a little money into gold recently. But it seems like every time I buy gold, it fizzles and I lose money. M…
I own and like POLRX. Then again, why? Frankly, and this may apply to you, it shows up on lists of high performing funds. I track my funds on StockCharts.com and note that this fund is up 122% in five years (unfortunately, I haven't owned it for …
Anyone here invested in Meridian Enhanced Equity Fund? It’s the number one fund listed by Baron’s in the large cap category. I invested when the fund was first opened under Meridian’s prior management. Back then it was a very tiny equity income fund…
Morningstar; Baron’s; Stockcharts.com; The Chartist Mutual Fund Letter; and NoLoad FundX Newsletter. Apple’s News+ gives me access to numerous articles and magazines for 9.99 a month. I also subscribe to N Y Times and Washington Post.
I guess there's no purpose reminiscing about my favorite airline from the 60s/70s: Western Airlines ("The only way to fly"). That's when "stewardesses" served hot food, that was good, while we sat in roomy comfortable seats. Seems like a lot of thi…
It is going to be interesting to watch how this all plays out. Note that Ted Moran serves on an advisory committee for Huawei. That’s part of the problem: everyone sees this issue through the prism of self interest.
David, thank you for those sources, which I waded through. I understand the arguments for Globalization, but those ideas are now colliding with the consequences of our offshoring to one of our greatest rivals, if not enemies, the privilege of manuf…
David: Just my opinion, but I believe the experts will be found to be wrong on this issue. I find it interesting that Thomas Freedman, who wrote a book on globalization, believes that we have a major problem with China.
Ask any worker whose job was outsourced, or any business owner who couldn’t compete with foreign competitors, who used cheap labor and government assistance: who pays the price when there are no tariffs. Or look at the U S towns that died when their…
I own VALSX, based upon recommendations from investing newsletters, and so far I’m really happy with its performance. Put some in my wife’s account as well.
I appreciate the thoughtful analysis from the above posts. Sadly, I invested in this fund the day it opened. I was a Mutual Series investor from the 80s. Wintergreen Fund looked like an opportunity to get Michael Price like talent at the beginning o…
You can count me as one reader who has been turned off by the political comments, and I have participated less often because of it. Can’t take a financial site seriously if it’s been overrun by angry political arguments.
I bought it when it opened. Thought that a Michael Price protege would make me rich. Sold the fund last year. Very poor performance. Put the proceeds in my existing Meridian funds, and very glad I did.
The standout defect in Morningstar's methodology is that the yearly survey is based solely on one year's performance. It would be helpful if Morningstar provided 3/5/10 year ratings. This paragraph in the article is suggestive:
"Many of the lagga…
Didn't Warren Buffett make an investment in derivatives and wish he hadn't? If memory serves me, he had a difficult and costly experience trying to unwind it.
I think I'll stick with the mutual funds that actually own the stocks they invest in. W…
I've sold a lot lately, especially in January. The steep up move with all of the negative news made me nervous. The indexes were way above their 200 day moving averages, so I figured a correction could be nasty. Glad I sold, now I have cash when I'…
I used to answer this question by citing the Mutual Series funds, but they have been on a slow train lately. I'm thinking of selling. I miss Michael Price.
My favorite closed funds are PRWCX and POAGX. Both funds get lots of mentions in these fo…
