In a similar fashion, Apple provides their OS for downloading. Consumers do not get a DVD anymore. What one does get is a receipt buried somewhere only Apple and hard core geeks can find so if something happens you can download again. OS crisis mana…
Thanks David for these insights. Japan has their issues with China regarding the So. China Sea claims and they are boosting aid and other assistance to countries like Philippines and Vietnam who are in the same boat. The assistance does have some mi…
All good points. When I get up in the morning to watch Bloomberg the markets are long closed already. (Hong Kong time). Getting older so I don't have the energy to get up earlier.
I think Yellen is showing some flexibility here. The jury may still…
One thing I see more of is that funds invest outside of their benchmark. It comes across as more garbage in, garbage out statistics to me. Recently I looked at a fund whose benchmark was MSCI Asia ex Japan. That fund had assets in Europe and No. Ame…
The morticians did a booming business in places like Dodge City and Tombstone. As for arms, hard to say. The Iraqi army gave up a bunch of our stuff we left to them. Now the ISIS has it.
The key is Turkey. If any harm comes to their embassy people…
I bought MAINX at inception and still own it. No plans to sell. My perception is that the risk on HY is not much more than the risk on higher grade fixed income.
Is my perception reality? Do other investors have that same perception?
Finally, I …
Like MJG, I read about 10-20% of Ted's links. There is some value in his postings. I don't think David said to stop posting links but rather to add some comments to postings. I took that request as applying to all posters and not just Ted.
I hope …
Congrats Crash. Investing when others are fleeing might sound Buffettish but that is exactly what one needs to do. When the markets turn around those shares you bought at sale prices show the success of your strategy.
Thanks MJG for the topic.
Yep a lot of brands come and go. PanAm and American Motors to name a couple. A lot of brands have changed in other ways. Chrysler is really Fiat with a different badge.
We all know those things that never change; death and taxes. Then again who kn…
I do like the idea of commenting on a link you are posting. It shows the others that you read the link beforehand and felt it was worth sharing to the community.
As for a set of rules or a mission statement? Nah. As others have said already this f…
@Dex,
Sounds much like my situation. I retired at 52. I also reduced my spending, waiting for the retirement funds to become available for use. SS plays an important part because when I do take it, that will be less from my own investments which sh…
It's all in the name. Chicken Adidas are grilled chicken feet. No thanks. Even hamburgers here are hard to eat. Green tomatoes, cucumber for pickles, and hot red onions. But there is still some good food to be had.

Hi Scott.
Jardine's Dairy Farm also owns Wellcome Supermarkets which has been a big success here in the Philippines as well as other places in Asia. JM is well placed for success here as they have their tentacles in a variety of business applica…
"Also, how many were forced into retirement via layoff or something else."
Yep that is a big factor in recent years. Also, a delayed factor will be those who found new work at a later age but at a much reduced salary/wage.
That ER is pretty low. I hadn't heard of that index. Something Vanguard concocted?
Anyway mid caps have done well too so you have the best of both worlds.
It also has 20.55% in Europe and 8% in the Americas. Seems to be new territory for Matthews.
Yum's KFC and Pizza Hut have a large presence in Asia and still growing. That is still a big chunk of total assets.
I had to check this out as far as being an index. The benchmark is the Spliced Small Cap Index. That's a new one on me.
In the case of small caps, would a managed fund be better suited than a index fund? I'm thinking on those lines because a small…
They are surprised that IRAs and 401/403 etc are third behind SS and pensions for retiree incomes. As pensions go away for most I can see that changing. The RMD must play a part in here at some point.
Personal assets are funding my second life at t…
India has a long ways to go to get to a world class environment. Another country is Indonesia. They also have a huge young population that is vastly undersized. Indonesia is a large country with all the action in Jakarta. The rest of the country jus…
Japan has obviously been a bad investment for the buy and holders. On the other hand, I have been able to ride a couple of dead cats to nice profits.
It all depends on the person Ted.
That's an interesting fund. It has assets all over the place but the focus is in Asia as the name implies. Zero exposure to Japan at this time. I don't own MJFOX but MAPIX instead.
@Crash,
They are using Lipper's stats.
I think MAPIX is a good fund to hold onto for the long run. You mentioned it is your largest holding. If that is making you uncomfortable at times perhaps some diversifying is in order?
I pulled the plug on one fund that was lagging a bit with its small cap counterparts and also felt this was a good time as we have had a good run as of late. Put it into ACCNX. That fund has held up pretty well.
@Ted,
Yes there is a WSJ fund snapshot. It does use Lipper data. MW is part of the same family. Bing is your new friend.
