Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
I was traveling and just settled in back home. Pretty much everything has been said already but I wanted to commend David for his patience and attitude in handling this situation. I hope Ted will continue in delivering his expert opinions in investi…
We flew Cathay Pacific through Hong Kong and then into Cebu doing the exact same thing. Korean Airlines also flies to Cebu from Seoul-Incheon.
It's literally an adventure every time we fly into Manila. It's been like that for the over twenty years…
If the San Miguel plan is adopted then they would be the big winner in this. The economy of the Philippines is in part driven by tourism and that is increasing. Right now the govt is leaning towards a Japan offer of build and transfer.

Interesting article. The conservative asset allocation profiles have a lot of cash which is a losing proposition and has been for years. Personally I would not hold that much in cash these days.
I hadn't thought of that aspect. Most consumers are thinking of AppleTV but my first thoughts were the CloudKit apps. The Healthkit and Homekit apps could be big, especially Healthkit.
I plan to stay diversified but I have gone conservative this year going from 80/20 stocks and fixed income to 65/35 at the moment. If the situation gets dire I may shift more to fixed.
You invested in a infrastructure fund because you felt this area was going to be big in the years to come. It's a very specific sector for a fund to be in and so it will be volatile. In the long haul the country has to invest more in infrastructure.…
@Maurice,
Your mention of chocolate seconds brought back some wonderful memories as a kid. I grew up in Tacoma WA., the home of Brown and Haley who makes the Mountain Bar. They had a outlet store next to the factory and there one could purchase sec…
Teds comment was my first thought too. The ER for this fund must be higher to absorb the cumulative costs of holding those funds.
@rjb112, I agree. Just buy a low cost high yield fund with a good record.
Interesting article Ted. For one, there are a lot of maybes and what ifs. Is a target date fund that holds only index funds a good choice versus the investor buying those same funds themselves? To me that says the company and or the manager is not p…
@VintageFreak,
I have been doing the same thing. American Century made it easy for me by opening a new fund ASDVX. Short duration of less than 3 years. Investment grade and high yield instruments from anywhere including emerging markets. Preferred …
I think the poster in question has a system where he can monitor his holdings. Maybe a computer application? He seems to do well with it and I commend him for that.
Simplicity does have its place. I know I
could never monitor 50 + funds. I have 9…
@Bitzer, the Pimco funds seem to be very similar to the Schwab ones. The RAFI terminology being used is new but the underlying format is the same from what I gather. I didn't check ERs but the Schwab ETFs are super low in that regard.
The fundame…
I actually enjoy the length of the piece. It's only a monthly commentary but it is very apparent that David puts a lot of time in preparing to write each month. I appreciate that.
Vintage, I agree regarding Chuck Jaffe. His Marketwatch articles are usually selling something. One of his latest was about the death of buy and hold investing, something he had been promoting for years. What changed his mind all of a sudden?
