@hank,
My parents were the same way. My thinking is that the Depression made a huge impact on them regarding money and safety. That generation was generally frugal. Some of that rubbed off on me and I consider that a benefit.
I like SBIO and PBE for biotech. IBB is a decent fund but just a few big names take up a large portion of assets, mainly the big 4 biotech companies. That comes across to me as a red flag of sorts.
The Nikkei has done well the past couple or so years, but since late last year it has stumbled. I always keep a toe in Japan and sometimes more than that. Right now it's a big experiment they are trying there and the world is watching.
I have two multi-asset income funds. One has some hedging capabilities unlike the other. I also own a Global Real Estate Fund which is a area I think everyone should have a small piece in. Outlier funds should be seasoning for your meat and potatoes…
The fees and the redemption gates are the big stickler for me. I won't deal with any MM fund with those in place.
Meanwhile, I have what's called Investor High Yield Checking account at Schwab Bank. No fees, no minimum, and it pays 0.06% interest.…
I see we are in MSNBC mode here.
Mexican trucks? Well, when they can figure out how to put rings on Pistons correctly, then I'll consider.
Robots will be the biggest cause of job loss in the next 20 years. JMO.
Old_Skeet,
Thanks for the kind words.
I bought this fund at inception. So far I really like the way this fund works. Volatility is low and it fills a void for investors like myself who want a income stream. I also like the fact that it is a go-an…
I had missed that. Sorry. I guess the fund didn't want to stray from its primary purpose as many do when they get too big. I wonder if another fund has or will open up to fill that void? Although, there are many other places one can go to find simil…
Good to hear from you as well Old_Skeet.
Another fund that I have mentioned before on here also fits in with what the outlook is saying. Their mid-cap value fund, ACMVX, is another excellent choice.
As I have been focusing more on income versus …
Hi Mona,
TWEIX is a great fund with a long history of excellent performance. Five star rated at M-star. If this is a sideways move I would purchase outright, otherwise a DCA might be prudent in case the market trips up here in the near future.
Go…
I don't have an answer but that is quite a big change in allocation. Perhaps a call to Vanguard would be best?
With a target date fund, that kind of change will be harder to track versus a target allocation fund of which I favor. It's a personal ch…
@Sven,
I've noticed that same cash allocation in some of my funds as well. It does make me wonder as well.
I get the impression that the Fed is very timid right now. They don't want to hurt anyone or any group but their inaction most likely will …
@Old_Joe,
I have a small amount in ALNNX as well. That fund has hedging capabilities. According to my advisor, AMJVX seeks maximum income while ALNNX is more stable. I plan on just sticking with AMJVX in the future.
I sold BGNMX when the Fed rate…
@Sven, That is the multi-billion dollar question. My holdings in bond funds have dropped dramatically. Besides these Multi-asset income funds, the only other bond fund I own directly is a GNMA fund which has done okay while facing the rising rate e…
I own a couple of these funds and I like them for holdings I keep before they go into a straight cash account. ie, For 3 years cash eq, I have 1 yr in cash and 2 yrs in MAIFs.
"I like fund manager to have a wide mandate when it comes to these types of investment choices."
I agree. With these types of investments or even bond funds, I like the strategy, especially when you depend on these funds for ballast or relative saf…
Thanks for posting this davfor. In the search for a replacement for bond funds for stability, I researched income funds and in particular multi asset income funds. In addition, AC introduced a new alt fund, Alternatives Income Fund which sounds like…
@david,
Well, since you won't acknowledge them, I will. God bless those members of the Navy Seals who performed the mission with success. Sadly, the current occupant of the Oval Office took their accomplishment as his own.
Many of those who own…
On a side note;
" I don't get the impression that illegal immigrants make up the bulk of workers at companies like Walmart and McDonald's who need to get Food Stamps and other assistance because their pay is so poor."
I'm sure this has happened in…
Does this mean that instead of Bernanke's black helicopters showering money down from the skies, we will soon have Yellen's white helicopters with vacuum cleaners sucking it all up?
@scott,
Spot on. A lot of people are "married" to these stocks. Their obsession is fanatical. Say one negative thing about Netflix and you will be swarmed by the fanatics. It's almost comical
Thanks for the commentary this month.
Regarding naming storms, it used to be only hurricanes and typhoons got names. Now every gust of wind on the oceans gets a name. To keep us always scared and afraid?
As for the Cubs winning the World Series, …
@Old_Skeet,
Thanks for those links. Yes I agree for the most part that the markets are overvalued. Some stocks like Apple are very much undervalued. But most go the other direction like NFLX, TSLA, FIT and the rest of the fad momo stocks of the mome…
My opinion only but if this downturn extends into the Christmas shopping season, we could be looking at a full blown bear market of 6-18 months. What worked in 2008-09 may not work this time around.
@VintageFreak,
I have two retirement accounts with American Century. I talked to one of their retirement specialists on the phone and he set everything up. I got the paperwork and signed it. One account was a 403b rollover in their funds. The other…
