Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
Exactly. We all have different views and methods in how we handle our investments. It would be pretty boring if everyone bought and held a S&P index fund.
@catch22, sounds like a good plan. Hard drives are cheap nowadays.
The biggest issue is passwords. They need to be long and complicated. I just let the MPB make them for me and store in the Keychain. It's amazing how weak most passwords are that …
Having a cloud backup would be beneficial if your home was burglarized and the computer and related disks were taken. A better reason is in case of disaster where everything is destroyed, you have the offsite backup.
Any important files should be …
Old_Skeet can clarify this but I think when he is monitoring his portfolio he is doing it by sleeve. That way his attention is only to those funds within that sleeve and not the entire 53. Compare that to my portfolio with only 11 funds. I watch all…
@Maurice, since you haven't had any problems with the current OS, the old adage of not messing with a good thing could apply here. Since you might be upgrading hardware in a couple of years, maybe just stay as is for now.
With that said, one good…
..."past 40 words/15 sec. you better get my ( and everyones) attention,"
Most intellectual duscussions are longer than 40 words or 15 seconds. No sound bites here at MFO.
"I think that indeed could be part of it. For the past couple of years I have kept my bond funds within my own portfolio in funds that were either short duration or ones that leaned that way. One can easily see, at times, extended maturity bonds fu…
Thanks @Old_Skeet for posting this.
In Tom Madell's part in bonds, I wondered if he was hinting that bonds will suffer longer because of the Fed's indecision on when to raise rates?
As for M*, they continue on the downslide.
Even though I am a guy, I have heard some good things about the latest Windows. There is a lot of OSX stuff in there. I would think the cloud stuff could be disabled?
I'm curious as to why the focus on small caps in Europe versus a multi-cap type fund? Someone mentioned PRESX which has a good record. I would not overlook that or any other fund that has done well.
If the OP already has international equity fund…
It all depends on the use of the phone and that applies to any device really. Teenagers making selfie pictures are not productive versus someone who manages projects and uses the phone for comma. Then their is the app universe. For some it stops at …
Also I have heard that one of the new rules is that redemptions out of MM funds would be stopped during market stress periods. If true, that is not good.
Edit: Here is a Forbes article with info on the new regs.

There is a thread regarding that Fidelity situation up here.

Bloomberg US is a step up from CNBC. There are some programs that are annoying. The morning show is a bit over the top but nowhere near CNBC for the cheerleading. If you have access to Bloomberg worldwide, the programming is very good.
I think kids can bring their own lunches but do the schools try to get 100% enrollment for the lunch program? I think they get federal money for each student enrolled. A brown bagger might be considered a radical.
Many parents today do not see the…
David, thanks for clearly stating what is wrong with the current news/journalism field. Those of us who grew up in a earlier time and experienced good writing and reporting can see the difference. The younger people will use today's journalism as th…
@Old_Joe, 5% interest rate in savings at most banks in a former time period. Yes, those were the days.
I was a brown bag kid too. Actually in grade school we had lunch buckets. Bologna sandwiches, apple, some chips and a drink.
We also walked t…
I have seen some similar articles with pictures including the moldy bun. Growing kids need more than that. That lunch pictured is a disgrace.
Best thing is a brown bag lunch if they will let the kids bring one.
As mentioned in another thread, Gundlach is right more than he is wrong. I would take his word over a WSJ article that waffles on the question.
Output is increasing so that is good. The Saudi's hate it though. Too bad.
I've been reading more and more drivel by the big names as well. Jaffe is one. Most of the Marketwatch team is pretty poor. It has been mentioned here that the quality at sites like WSJ and Barrons have declined.
Next thing you know we will be forced to buy only the foods that are on the Michelle's school lunch list.
You WILL eat that moldy bun and you WILL LIKE IT!
This week I have noticed a tug of war going on with AAPL. The news that some traders and hedge funds have sold their stakes has me scratching my head. I can see cutting back some but then again I don't manage a fund either. Will these experts regret…
