Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
From the article;
"American paychecks are growing, we’re getting close to full employment, inflation data is where the Fed wants it to be, oil prices have stabilized and the U.S. dollar has stopped appreciating."
I guess a few weeks means everyth…
CNBC was trying to make news with that interview which didn't work out for them. They should stay out of politics unless it affects the markets.
As for Frank Holmes, his mistake was giving money to a foundation that is more of a bank account to th…
On a side note, some international and emerging markets funds with significant exposure to Asia had some decent gains today compared to the losses most domestic equity funds had.
Thanks @Mona for that link. The article makes perfect sense. There are endless possibilities for that money. Besides self enjoyment and investing the money one can start a college fund for grandkids or donate to church or charity.
It's good to rea…
Longevity insurance, perhaps a small annuity could fit in here?
If the retiree is going to travel, most likely it will be in the earlier years. So having that money early on would help with those expenses.
As for underspending, that's where the …
The headline suggests you are looking for a fund or funds that would do well in a low growth environment. I believe that it would have to be multiple funds to achieve your goal. LLJB has a good suggestion on emerging/frontier markets. You would need…
Great comment Scott. Are people putting more value on a burger or chicken joint than they are in a company that is working on a cure for multiple sclerosis or hepatitis C? It sure seems that way. Another thought about the smaller bio techs, I thin…
It's the negative stories that we hear all the time. One member of my family needed to contact Social Security. He called and called and kept getting hung up on. He ended up going to the area office.
Has anyone here been in a line only to have the…
@MJG, Thanks for those Monte Carlo references. I am a big fan of the system. There is another site that has a very simple MC calculator.

I run the calculator on a range of returns. This w…
@scott, Today there was another IPO of a restaurant. Bojangles. Ticker is BOJA. Up 25% for its first day of trading.
It's just a chicken resto. Probably the next Cramer pump.
New Zealand is a real treasure. I would like to visit there myself. Also I wanted to add Switzerland and the Black Forest. Beautiful country. Rome and the Vatican for the history and the art.
Wow, there are so many places. Where to start?
California. The central coast. Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara just to name a few towns and cities. Beautiful country. Utah and Arizona. The canyons and the Monument Valle…
From the article;
"The labor-force participation rate edged up to 62.8% from 62.7%."
What was the normal LFP rate from past years?

Asia was mixed at the close today. The Shanghai and Schenzhen had big days however. Schenzhen was up over 4%. Shanghai up over 2% and Hong Kong up more than 1%.
Politically I think the markets liked the results because of no change. The polls before the vote were way off as well. The UK is also looking at withdrawing from the EU which would be a blow to that union.
The pound sterling had a good day indee…
@hank, I think one big point of the thread was that we are inundated with reports that tell us to wait when in fact it makes sense for some to take SS at 62. Even here on MFO, we must get about one link a week on this subject. It is a very personal…
I purchased a similar fund, ASDVX as a part of my fixed income side. The short duration would mean less volatility during rising interest rates. I have noticed this during volatile days in the market up or down as my other bond funds had more fluctu…
WFM down 9.74% at the close. Some or all of these high flyer stocks need haircuts. Is SHAK at its apogee and starting the downwards leg? Down over 9% after hours. All Roman candles come down sooner or later.
"Not that you don't know this; but too many folks who may desire to not start SS early, must take the money early, as it is money they really need for living. The SS money is not for investing or otherwise; for these folks. "
This is why taking SS …
There is a big difference from reading about Icahn's dealings in the media with his portrayal as an activist investor, and watching the man in an interview, especially when he goes over his childhood and growing up. I enjoyed the show.
I watched it again and I did see some movement in one of the buildings in the background so it must be real. Maybe they moved up to get away from the flashing lights?
From the article:
"It's time for corporations and those at the top to contribute."
Some politicians sound like a broken record with this phrase.
Seriously, if they would put forth a proposal that concentrated on roads rather than having these oth…
I just watched episode 2 yesterday. They still had the Times Square background. Episode three is much better.
Is that background for real or just a display?
@msf and @Junkster, Thanks to both of you for those clear and informative answers. The statistics show we are living longer but as with any statistical study, there is a mean average. So 50% don't make it to that certain age and 50% go beyond it. …
