Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
As time goes on the meaning of holidays and other landmark places change. In my younger days, the Tomb of The Unknowns was known and called the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I still call it by the the original name.
Veterans Day is a holiday to rem…
I agree with @scott on the valuations of some of these newer offerings. SHAK and LOCO are two examples. This reminds me somewhat of the tech bubble before it burst.
A bigger question might be, if the economy turns negative, are we looking at a lon…
A bit defensive, are we not?
As I stated in my previous comment, "I watch very little television news these days." I avoid CNN entirely. I do not have MSNBC but if I did I would avoid them also. I watch NHK world news, BBC, and a bit of Fox though…
To add; the wife and I traveled down to the Oregon Coast during the time that ship had gone aground near Coos Bay. We stayed in Bandon which is just south. We didn't see anything except for the brief time we passed through that area where there was…
There are "hatemongers" on both sides. They both add to the divisive politics we have now.
People want to watch the news without being grouped into a category and then insulted for being in that group. Examples are, Christians, gun owners, and cli…
@heezsafe, my unconstrained fund ASDVX, is also shorting the ten year but the proportion of junk assets hasn't changed. Maybe Gundlach is speaking of a certain fund family?
@Ted, actually this thread was up first.
Two things. First they are throwing numbers out for effect. They should figure out the exact amount spilled. Secondly, I thought these pipelines were equipped with auto-shutoff mechanisms in case of rupture?
In any case, it's a big mess.
@MJG, Thanks for this discussion.
In the original comment you stated that a mix of 75% equities and 25% corporate bonds was an optimal asset mix. Remembering Professor Wm. Sharpe on this subject, he came up with the mix of 64% equities and 36% f…
Greece went through a similar fashion as it borrowed money from the IMF in order to pay their loan to the IMF. It's crazy. Now they are due in something like ten days from now and the IMF won't lend them anymore funds.
Thanks for jogging my memory as well.
Verbal challenges online are usually a lost cause. As for a cocktail, I would recommend a favorite of Cary Grant, the Gibson. You could also watch North by Northwest too. A genuine classic.
Okay, I wasn't sure if valuation was the key thing here. I don't own GILD. AAPL on the other hand had a good if not excellent quarterly report and the stock went down. I have read that the hedge funds were unloading on the good news. This has been o…
That must be the one. He couldn't delete his own post to which I replied that he could in a way. The post would be blank. I didn't think they would delete the entire thread.
"Over forty years, though, those ups and downs will be smoothed to some sort of a long-term performance."
Since we are talking about retirement, forty years should be taken as the upper limit of possible scenarios if one starts at age 60. Perhaps t…
"Yes, that was another adjustable variable of the "horse-drawn hand-executed spreadsheet": both the severity and the length of the downturn."
Yep. It makes sense to run the numbers on a annual basis. Also having exceptionally good years can balance…
@Dex, Agree on that. Each person develops their own answer. There is not one set figure or style for everyone.
The markets do look vulnerable here. a big downturn in retirement would be crippling. The recovery rate of the investments in the port…
Bernie Sanders runs under the Socialist banner each presidential election and gets the same several hundred votes each time. He has been living off of "other people's money " for quite some time now and knows no other system.
@Dex, The number that jumped out at me was the 4 years of cash for expenses. Isn't the general consensus calling for 18 months to 2 years? 4 years seems high to me and could be a drag on your portfolio.
In general, these types of questions are …
That healthcare number seemed low to me. That could be premiums only and is not including out of pocket expenses including the deductible.
Edit: Additionally, the food number may not be counting eating out. Entertainment is a broad category but …
This caught my eye as well.
"Apart from the control over the economy, there would be many other advantages of a cashless society. Such a system is much cheaper to run than one based on banknotes and coins. Forgery is impossible, as are robberies."…
"If you cannot bear to have the name Krugman pass your eyes (his analyses are clearest and easier to understand for a layperson, imo"
Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I find that Von Mises has a better hold on the subject. Pouring money into p…
This has been going on since 401k's came on the scene. Life insurance companies are a big reason. Whoever is the middle man in the process needs their cut.
