Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
Not entirely - it's made me a little cautious but I added something a couple of days ago. I'm not doing much, but it's more because I don't want to add much more to a lot of things at these levels than anything else. Still, I continue to like a numb…
"Do you consider yourself an Active or a Passive investor?"
Active. Dislike passive, although nothing against it. I like making specific investments, doing the research, etc.

No. I just …

In 2007 I had a 6-mo CD that yielded something like 4.5%. Now one yields around 0.045% lol.

It depends on what your definition of is is. In all seriousness, I don't know - maybe if you have more than a certain % of turnover yearly?

"But Microsoft has the power and might to return to respectable market share. "
Oh, I don't disagree. MSFT certainly has the power and scope to take market share if they wanted to. However, if Nokia's Elop does indeed become CEO, I was hoping for …
Reply to @Kenster1_GlobalValue: I'm not saying that Microsoft isn't highly successful in some regards, but simply that what I call the "public face" of their company - Windows 8, going into devices (then writing off a ton of Surface units), being la…
I started a small position in the fund about 1.5-2 years or so ago I dumped it recently - it has occasionally had some decent stretches during this period, but overall has done terrible. The fund continues to focus hugely on what have been signifi…
I like SGAPY, BCE, VZ and a few others. I agree with Ted on PRMTX.
The other thing I quite like in terms of media/communications is LMCA (Liberty Media.)
Reply to @mrc70: Yep, very well aware of the date of the thread. Was reminded of this thread by the post linked below about other funds from the company liquidating.
I like Naspers (NPSNY) a lot, but it's run up too much and I sold it a bit ago. However, I think that's an Africa consumer growth play that's broadly appealing (and it has broader EM exposure beyond its home base of Africa.)
I think it's an interesting, certainly rather "outside the box" portfolio. The criticism from some is likely that it's going to be too conservative (and it probably is), but I think you ultimately have to leave the desired risk level up to the indiv…
I've been busy with a few things lately and haven't posted these thread/s. I've made a few minor additions to current positions recently but am otherwise really to the point again where I don't have any ideas - don't want to buy, don't want to sell.…
Maybe El-Erian and Gross should stop going on CNBC (I haven't seen Gross on it as much lately), given that it probably isn't as useful a promotion tool, given that ratings have now gotten so bad that ratings have gone back nearly to what they were w…
Reply to @hank: Excellent points, especially in regards to the related issue. I think India is down to the point where someone could speculate if that was their interest (and maybe Indonesia, too.) EM broadly, maybe not there yet, although I think…
Reply to @Investor: Yep, you're right. Was at Pimco between IMF and Harvard. If I remember correctly, the EM fund did have an excellent record when he did manage it.
I own WP Carey (WPC), which manages its own non-listed funds (WPC was an MLP, but changed to a REIT about a year or so ago.) That, for me, is a long-term holding. It is somewhat volatile at times, but held up rather well (by comparison to other RE) …

A couple of interesting names in the sub-advisers. I'm not interested, but it looks like more than just an instance of "Invest with hedge funds!" and then it turns out to be a bunch of completely unheard of managers. The T Rowe Price Global Allocati…
I think it's a solid fund and probably a good alternative to PAUDX. It is an absolute return fund and a very conservative fund, so the expectation should be singles and doubles, but consistently.
Marketfield (although the original, cheaper shares are no longer available) is really a favorite choice. Pimco EQS Long/Short is another good choice, although I do think that - despite a really terrific year this year - it will probably be at least …
Reply to @ducrow: I think my issue with PGMDX is that I am curious how much El-Erian actually manages the fund and whether or not his name was largely for marketing.
It's a very different investing environment than it was 10-20 years ago. It wasn't THAT long ago that if you wanted to sell something you had to call your broker and during that time you could think about it, maybe not give into emotion and hang up.…
Cash sales of houses were something like 15-20% in 2007/2008. They are now something like 60%. First time buyers are also a much smaller portion of the market. I think housing probably bottomed, but I still think enthusiasm has gotten ahead of itsel…

I still think an "unconstrained" PAUDX (which could use any etfs instead of just Pimco funds) would be very popular.
ALFA is another ETF in the same category tracking fund holdings, although that fund hedges when the S & P 500 drops below the 200 day MA at the end of a given month.
