Cuba

Why are we screwing over Cuba? What have the people of Cuba done to deserve this?

Comments

  • @gman57- sir, that is the exact question that I asked my wife over dinner the other evening. Cuba hasn't done anything to us in a decade or more... sure, we don't like their form of government, but so what? Why do we even care?

Apparently we are now no better than Russia, attacking other countries, VZ and now Cuba.
  • This is just a guess but here goes. A. It’s an easy target. B. Weakening the Cuban regime rewards S. Florida Cuban ex pats who have been loyal repugnants. C. In the before times it was fashionable for GOP presidents to be hostile to socialist countries.
  • We seem to really like Russia all of a sudden... what's the problem with Cuba?

It is not Cuba but the problem is the Florida vote with its long-held grudge about Cuba.

@Anna got it right and it is the ex-Cubans in FL that came from the Fulgencio Batista‘s era. When the ruled Cuba, they were violent and corrupt that led to the uprising of Fidel Castro. The rest is history as the Bastista Cubans left their home country and reside in FL.

Bush continued to impose trade embargo although Carter tried to normalize the relationship. Cuba has weaken significantly after the Soviet bloc collapsed, even though Cuba remain a communist country. In my opinion, Cuba pose much reduced risk for several decades. By the way, Vietnam today follows similar path as Cuba, but the new generations of the former South Vietnamese Americans have changed to lean towards democrat. And that is a positive evolution.

I think both these comments are spot on.

Still, FL isn't turning blue, or even purple. So, what is to gain?
