Not sure if the magnitude is any worse than what has been occurring across the country for years if not decades under Administrations of both colors. Haven't there been instances of as many as 20 or more children being killed sitting in classrooms? And of worshipers being shot in churches & synagogues? Not meant to take away from the seriousness here. Just noting it is not an exception.
Ideally, I'd like a society similar to what England had in the 60s. Firearms were strictly limited. Even the average cop on the beat didn't carry one. Dream-on ...
Wikipedia lists the death toll of 60 Nevada concert patrons in 2017 as the worst U.S. mass shooting. The perpetrator was a successful businessman who'd had no prior criminal record, nor did he appear suspicious.
27 children died at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012. That gnaws at me because you have a captive audience here. A 9 or 10 year old does not generally "elect" to attend school. They are sent there by law and parental responsibility. To me, that magnifies the sadness, anger, disgust.
What I'm wondering ... Do seasonal holidays breed more depression / mental illness and lead to a higher incidence of such episodes? A chain has its weakest link. Make firearms widely available to a population numbering in the hundreds of millions and an almost incalculably small percent will use them as a way of lashing out whether in anger at a race, religion, authority figure, political opponent, lost lover, or some other source of personal angst ...
Unfortunately my statement is not time specific. I lost hope when 20 6-7 year old kids were massacred in Newtown and absolutely nothing changed. If that didn't stir the USA to action I'm afraid nothing will. Almost everyone I talk to including gun owners and hunters and maybe the majority of US citizens agree we need more common sense gun laws but the industry and lobbyist sow fear (they're going to take all your guns) among our less than average IQ population hence our present situation. If that's not it I guess it's because the same folks buy our politicians to do their bidding.
@gman57 , Following the Newtown massacre I remember 88% of the nation wanted gun law reform. But the efforts of the NRA and the likes of Mitch McConnel made certain any legislation to that end would never pass. By that time McConnel had earned the nick name of Grim Reaper, as he frequently killed bills before they even reached the house floor. McConnel couldn't allow the Dems a win, and so We The People lost out purely for political motivations.
...But the 2nd incident I linked above happened in Sydney. Aimed at Jews, specifically. I'm ready to eat the shooter's face. Bring him to me. ******************* Al Jazeera: NSW Police say 16 killed, 40 wounded in Bondi Beach shooting. Police announce details about shooters: The New South Wales police say one shooter – a 50-year-old man – was shot dead by at (sic) the scene.
The other shooter – a 24-year-old man – suffered critical injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard, the police added in a statement.
