--- What was in the East Wing of the White House?
The East Wing of the White House primarily houses the offices of the First Lady and her staff, but also contains the visitor's entrance, the East Colonnade, the Family Theater, and the underground Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC). A new ballroom is currently being constructed in the East Wing as of late 2025, which involves demolishing part of the existing structure.
Office spaces
First Lady's staff: The East Wing is the traditional location for the First Lady's office and her staff, including the social secretary and correspondence staff.
White House Graphics and Calligraphy Office: This office is also located in the East Wing.
Public and visitor areas
Visitor's Entrance: The East Wing is the entrance for social guests and also for visitors touring the White House.
East Colonnade: This is a corridor that connects the East Wing to the main residence, with views of the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden.
Jacqueline Kennedy Garden: Located outside the East Wing, this garden is used for receptions and is visible from the East Colonnade.
Other facilities
Family Theater: Located in the East Wing, this room was originally a cloakroom for large events and is now used as a movie theater.
Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC): Located in a bunker beneath the East Wing, it is a secure shelter and communications hub for the president and other officials during emergencies.
Recent and future changes
New ballroom: As of October 2025, construction on a new ballroom is underway, which requires the demolition of part of the existing East Wing facade.
Comments
Ahh … Renovation is never pretty. That’s just an aside and not meant to be a judgement on the particular project.
when she announced this project in July.
Like seemingly everyone in the Trump administration, Ms. Leavitt is a habitual liar.
The White House has proceeded with the massive construction project without approval from
the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC).
The NCPC is typically responsible for approving construction work and major renovations
to government buildings in the Washington area.
Will Scharf was appointed by President Trump to preside over the NCPC
and also serves as the White House staff secretary.
During a September public meeting, Mr. Scharf stated that the board does not have jurisdiction
over demolition or site preparation work for buildings on federal property.
This is yet another example of the Trump administration ignoring norms
and disregarding regulations/laws to do whatever the hell it wants!
40 U.S. Code § 8711 - National Capital Planning Commission
(a) Establishment and Purpose.—
The National Capital Planning Commission is the central federal planning agency
for the Federal Government in the National Capital,
created to preserve the important historical and natural features of the National Capital,
except for the United States Capitol Buildings and Grounds
(as defined and described in sections 5101 and 5102 of this title),
any extension of, or additions to, those Buildings and Grounds,
and buildings and grounds under the care of the Architect of the Capitol.

Although the U.S. government has been shut down now for 20 days, leaving vital public servants without pay, work on Trump’s 90,000-square-foot ballroom has continued. In July, when he announced the project, Trump said: “It won’t interfere with the current building. It won’t be. It’ll be near it but not touching it—and pays total respect to the existing building, which I’m the biggest fan of. It’s my favorite. It’s my favorite place. I love it.”
Trump’s promise notwithstanding, demolition crews have begun to tear down the East Wing of the White House, the “People’s House.” Jonathan Edward and Dan Diamond of the Washington Post noted that today a backhoe began ripping through the structure. The National Capital Planning Commission, which approves construction of federal buildings, has not signed off on the destruction, but in September, Will Weissert of the Associated Press reported that the Trump-appointed head of the commission, Will Scharf, who is also the White House staff secretary, said the board has no jurisdiction over demolition or site preparation. “What we deal with is essentially construction, vertical build,” Sharf said during the only public meeting about the ballroom.
But White House officials do not appear to want to advertise their destruction of part of the historic building. Natalie Andrews and Alex Leary of the Wall Street Journal reported that officials at the Treasury Department, which has a front-row seat to the demolition, have told employees not to share photos of the grounds. According to Trump, funding for his ballroom has been provided by dozens of companies, including Apple, Amazon, Lockheed Martin, and Coinbase. As of September, the White House had not yet submitted building plans to the National Capital Planning Commission.
The first president to live in the White House after its construction was a contemporary of Thomas Paine, John Adams. When he moved into the house in 1800, Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail: “I Pray Heaven To Bestow The Best Of Blessings On This House And All that shall hereafter Inhabit it. May none but Honest and Wise Men ever rule under This Roof.”
Note: President John Adams would surely disapprove of the extremely
Dishonest and very Foolish Man who currently occupies the White House!
By some accounts the ”ballroom” will be larger than the White House. Only FD could approve.
The demolition of the White House is somewhat symbolic of the mass destruction that he has "championed".
championed" "caused and directed".And he must have acquired his "taste" from comic books.
“It’s not his house. It’s your house [emphasis added]. And he’s destroying it.”
Yesterday, former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton cut to the heart of President Donald J. Trump’s
destruction of the East Wing of the White House.
Indeed, that might have been the whole point. After saying in July that the ballroom
he planned to build would not touch the East Wing, the president tore into the building on Monday,
the first workday after about seven million people turned out for the No Kings protests
to demonstrate their opposition to his administration.
There are currently no approved plans to rebuild, no permits,
no signs of weatherproofing for a construction project begun just before winter,
no indication that the history or the paintings or the artifacts in the East Wing were preserved
[emphasis added]. There is only the destruction of the People’s House.
Today, Luke Broadwater of the New York Times reported that Trump will demolish the entire East Wing.
According to a senior administration official, the demolition should be finished by this weekend.

"The White House confirmed the list to The Hill amid demolition of the East Wing to make room for the ballroom.
The demolition has sparked controversy and pushback from historians and preservation groups."
"Trump told reporters Wednesday the project would cost $300 million,
up from the initial $200 million estimate the White House shared at the end of July."
