Friends of my Gal Pal were told by insurance company they would receive nothing for damage to their siding as it was to old they were told. They did get the roof replaced & cost covered. My question is , should they contact the state insurance commission? We received 1/2 cost coverage on Lois's siding after recent hail damage. Damage was to 2 sides & siding couldn't be matched. Thanks for any replies, Derf
That's a new one. Is there a section or clause in the policy that relates to this and what they will cover or not cover with respect to damaged siding? I know that many insurance companies these day will not reside an entire house for 1-2 damaged sides. They may replace the damaged siding while excluding an exact color match.
@Mark A few years back the same Insurance company said the roof on the other side of duplex we lived in didn't have enough hail damage to re-roof. Inspector from Lois's insurance came out & gave the okay for a new roof on her side. I talked with owner of the other side & told him to recheck with his agent. It didn't take long & the agent reported to owner a new roof was coming!
@Derf - yes sadly it seems to matter which damage assessor you get. I personally had a similar situation with my home where neighbors all around me were getting entire roofs replaced and my guy was saying that I didn't have enough damage. A second opinion cleared that up.
A little pushback does go a long way. Even health insurance will deny coverage and force the consumer to demand review.
I noticed an interesting line in my renewed policy this time. In the past, a roof replacement from hail was covered under my basic $1000 deductible. No longer! There is now an $11,000 deductible for hail damage. People should keep an eye on their policies, to not be caught unaware.
I have had two roofs from hail damage. I plan to call and see what it costs to bring down that hail deductible.
My auto insurance is combined with homeowners. I have been with the same agency/company for 50 years! My auto rates are dirt cheap and I have every conceivable discount and something called "CERTIFICATE OF GUARANTEED RENEWAL", which is no longer even offered. It basically means they cannot cancel any of my policies.
When I call the agent to discuss anything, they always comment that my rates are the lowest they have ever seen. Apparently much higher deductibles from insurance companies for hail damage are becoming commonplace. 1-2% of dwelling valuation are not unusual. "In Illinois, new homeowners policies require a minimum 1% wind/hail deductible, while in some parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the minimum has increased to 2%."
But, point taken. many people lower premiums by shopping homeowners insurance. We've had two hail claims amounting to about $28,000 total, and a lightning claim which came to $7500. They have always been decent to us. I really cannot complain. I just thought people should be aware.

Check the policy first though.
