Israel has been conducting air strikes in Syria.

Relax for a day (Monday) and discover more stuff militarily. Aside from the troubles in this country, I've become so weary of so much.

OVERVIEW:
Israel has been conducting air strikes in Syria, particularly in the southern region bordering Israel, following clashes between Syrian government forces, Druze communities, and Bedouin tribes. Israel claims these attacks are aimed at preventing Iran-backed militias and hostile Islamist militants from establishing a presence near its border and protecting the Druze population. Syria, however, has criticized these attacks, accusing Israel of attempting to destabilize the region.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
1. Security Concerns and Preventing Entrenchment:
Israel is concerned about the potential for Iran-backed militias and Islamist militants to gain influence in southern Syria, particularly after the collapse of the Assad regime.
These groups could pose a threat to Israeli security, especially if they establish a presence near the border.
Israel has been targeting areas where these groups are suspected to be present, including areas near the Syrian Ministry of Defense in Damascus.
2. Protecting the Druze Population:
Israel has a significant Druze population, and there is a strong connection between the Israeli Druze community and their counterparts in Syria.
Israel has expressed concern about the safety and well-being of the Druze in Syria, particularly during the ongoing clashes.
Some Israeli officials have stated that they cannot stand by while Druze are targeted in Syria, according to Al Jazeera.
3. Clashes in Southern Syria:
Recent clashes in the Druze-majority city of Suwayda have involved Bedouin tribes, Druze armed groups, and Syrian government forces.
These clashes have led to casualties and instability in the region.
Israel has responded to these clashes with airstrikes, further escalating the situation.
4. Syria's Perspective:
Syria has condemned the Israeli attacks, accusing Israel of attempting to destabilize the region and interfering in its internal affairs.
Syria has also stated that it is taking steps to protect its citizens and maintain order, including deploying forces to Suwayda.
Syria has criticized Israel's claims of protecting the Druze, stating that Israel is using the Druze as a pretext for its actions.
5. Broader Regional Implications:
The situation in Syria is complex, with various actors and interests involved, according to The New York Times.
Israel's actions in Syria have implications for regional stability and the balance of power, according to The Conversation.
The United States is also involved, attempting to navigate the situation and encourage normalization of relations between Syria and Israel.

    That's my take, too.

Can Orange Buffoon do something right, by accident?
The current Syrian gummint has removed Assad, forsaken terrorism (a la the IRA via the Good Friday Accords) and seeks to normalize its society and join the human race. It is indeed complicated. But as ever, the Israeli regime acts like a rogue State. They are indeed right now occupying considerable southern portions of Syria.

Syria's new admin. is hobbled, unless and until they can subdue the insurgents in their country. But the official Syrian position is no threat to Israel. Hell, the Israelis could be offering a mini-Marshall Plan. But that will never get past its war cabinet. and it might not fly in Syria, either. More's the pity.
  • How does the U.S. establish normalized relations with Syria, as with the recent removal of sanctions, but simultaneously look the other way as the Israeli war machine becomes a menace to Syria's fragile recovery?

    Notably:
--U.S. envoy Tom Barrack asked his Israeli counterparts on Tuesday to stand down to allow for a diplomatic resolution, and the Israelis committed to do so, according to a U.S. official.
--Instead, after a pause, Israel escalated the strikes. On Wednesday, Israel dropped bombs on Syria's military headquarters and near the presidential palace.

It appears as if Netanyahu is borrowing pages from Putin's playbook and the U.S. is getting played again.
  • Good article in The Atlantic.

  • I support Israel but I think they're going too far. After the holocaust you would think they would see they're doing it themselves. I'm reading too many being killed trying to get food/aid.

    I concur.
