Tariff, Brazil, Bolsinaro:: absurd

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/09/trump-brazil-tariffs-bolsonaro.html
So, the Orange Felon is making a statement: he doesn't want his fellow criminal slimebag being prosecuted for crimes. Because the law should not apply to such *special* scumbags. Only ORDINARY criminal scumbags should have to worry about the law or ethics or integrity. ... FIFTY percent tariff on Brazil.

The cherry on top: the U.S. has a trade surplus with Brazil. Apparently the balance of trade no longer has anything to do with the tariff madness. It's about his petty grievances now.
  • You don't suppose that Trump just raised the price of beef for everyone in the US, do you?

I am absolutely appalled. If anything like this had happened in previous administrations many members of Congress, of both parties, would be standing on their desks screaming about the absurdity and illegitimacy of the US interfering with the legal system of another free country. Now, no one- NOT ONE member of Congress is even speaking out on this. My God- what have we come to?

Trump feels emboldened by recent favorable Supreme Court decisions
and passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act which was one really ugly piece of legislation.
As AndyJ mentions, we have a trade surplus with Brazil.
The Brazil tariff situation exemplifies Trump's brazen exercise of power.
U.S. coffee drinkers may not be happy—Brazil is our largest coffee supplier
and accounts for 35% of our Arabica supply.
Brazil also accounts for 55% of U.S. iron ore imports.
That's not good for manufacturers whom the tariffs were supposed to protect.
  • My God- what have we come to?
    ASS Kissers!!
  • No words. Out of words. There ARE NO words to express the level of my disgust. More and more, we are a Mafia-ocracy, like Russia. The Congressional majority are enablers. As @Derf put it: ASS Kissers.

Maybe he's got a grievance against Micky D. or Wendy for not putting enough mayo on his last burger.

@Observant1: Hope he doesn't stick it to Colombia too.
  • Serial sadist.

    And we have a winner!

  • He thinks he's king of the world. What an ass. Brazil is just about saying go F87_)*&*&^K yourself, we don't need US trade.
  • I suspect that Trump is pushing many countries straight into China's arms.

You got that right. Of course, the Canadians will surely prefer to trade with Europe, instead. But while I was just up there, a news item showed that Canada's very first boat-load of LNG headed directly for CHINA just departed from Vancouver. They had formerly depended on goods traveling through the USA to get to them, prior to all of the recent crap. And there just isn't the necessary infrastructure in place to do all the ex-USA trading that they'd like to do, yet.

Uncle Orange, the Criminal Clown, is an expert at alienating just about everyone who isn't already a sycophant of his. Canada is deliberately beginning to beef-up its military capacity, in tandem with Europe and the rest of NATO. There's not much in the way of Canadian-made anything right now, militarily. Before Carney entered the scene, the Liberals seemed doomed. But he picked up a great many NDP votes. And the NDP lost so many seats in the latest election, it has lost official Party status. ...And the previous NDP leader, Jagmeet Singh, was spending his time apologizing to Rap "music" fans for attending a concert featuring a guy who is on the other side of a stoopid internecine feud in that "industry." Really dumb.
