Yes, Francis was a very good man, and a very good pope. It will be interesting to watch the succession politics- there's a very strong right-wing in the Catholic Church upper hierarchy, as well. The archbishop of San Francisco, for example, is a driving force in that arena. These is a right-wing element in the Vatican who had no use for Pope Francis, and tried to thwart him at every turn.

Quite right. Even going back to JP II, there has been a retreat from anything progressive inside the church; though his stance on social justice was powerful. Remember Solidarnosz? (spelling?) Polish dock workers. Unionizing as the Soviet era waned. And Francis was much more open-minded. In the midst of my travels and travails, I finished Cath. Sem, but did not get ordained. Gonzaga Univ. offered progressive, ecumenically-minded courses. Back at the residence, it was as if we were stuck in the Middle Ages.
They STILL are, since only those in possession of a penis are eligible for ordination.
Borowitz: JD Vance to Represent Satan at Pope's Funeral. "In a rare public statement, the Prince of Darkness said that he could not attend the funeral himself because it conflicts with a Tesla board meeting."
Yes, RIP Francis. I'm hoping for a Francis II next.
His 2015 encyclical was epic. I thought the tide might be turning then, but not so.
