2022 year-end capital gains distribution estimates (Vanguard's Final estimated year-end posted)
'Tis that time of year again! Some preliminary estimates are now available. As in years past, please alphabetize your funds. To make it easier for readers post (new) next to your additions to differentiate it from your older existing posts. Be sure to check the entire page for other various posts with possible links. Thanks to everyone who contributes and posts their information! Please keep in the mind that it is early, and the estimates posted are tentative.
My summary: FUNDS. Many mutual funds/OEFs are facing heavy REDEMPTIONS/OUTFLOWS and are forced to sell, and realize gains, on their long-held positions. Their investors would be shocked to receive large CG distributions this December despite the funds showing severe losses for 2022 (it won’t matter how long the fund owner held the fund). The ETFs don’t have this problem due to their special structure (basically, they can trade in-kind with authorized participants without any tax consequences). Mentioned are SHRAX (also, manager change), BGRFX, BPTRX, FKGRX, DFUSX, FDGRX, TWCUX, JHBCX and PEOPX (SP500 index), NINDX (LC index). (It is too early for funds to post estimates for 2022, but the article makes guesses based on funds’ potential CG exposures and reported outflows) https://ybbpersonalfinance.proboards.com/thread/347/barron-september-26-2022-2?page=1&scrollTo=785
One can avoid CG distributions by selling around the distribution. Sell by the record date and repurchase on or after the ex-date. In most years the size of gain one realizes when selling exceeds the size of the potential CG distribution rendering this maneuver pointless.
But in years when the CG is large and shareholders don't have much appreciation in their shares, they can recognize less gain this way. The more shares that are sold this way the worse it is for remaining shareholders. That is because the capital gains for the fund are distributed across an ever shrinking number of shares.
Here's a M* piece describing this strategy. Their suggestion is to buy a similar fund rather than wait a day to repurchase your shares. If you do that, you have to make sure that the replacement fund either has no (or small) CG distributions, or it has a record date earlier than the fund you are selling. https://www.morningstar.com/articles/904867/how-to-help-clients-avoid-capital-gains-distributions
This was a surprise to me. Baron Funds made spillback distributions on 9/27. I thought I needed to worry only about tax year 2022, but 2021 is still taking a bite out of me. Here’s Baron’s explanation:
“Spillback distributions are distributions of ordinary and/or capital gains from the previous fiscal year that were not distributed by the end of that year. Spillback distributions must be declared within 9½ months (the fund’s extended tax return due date) of the end of the fund’s fiscal year. The extended tax return due dates are July 15th and October 15th for the September 30th and December 31st fiscal year end funds, respectively. Even though they represent ordinary income and/or capital gains earned by the fund in the previous fiscal year, they are taxable in the year in which they are paid.”
I was thinking I had plenty of time to sell BWBFX before distributions, but I was asleep at my iPad. Now I wonder what Baron will do for tax year 2022. Feeling like taxes fall on the middle class and me especially. Does baying at the moon do any good?
Rather large, again. Looks like around 9%, for example, in the case of POAGX. Even in the midst of several years' worth of redemptions, plus this year's losses, they may not feel like they're finding great values since they're keeping that fund and all three Vanguard ones closed.
TRP: on my first go-round, I can see only I-Class numbers. Institutional, yes? Did they just FORGET to post the retail numbers for individual investors? .... OK, I see there are some with no share-class designation at all. Must be what I'm wanting to find? Looks like I'm all fixed up now. Thanks!
Each category of funds has a retail and institutional class. For example, Group A has the retail class and the I-class. It appears the first table of funds in each group is the retail class while the second table in each group is the I-class shares.
Capital gains were an issue for us when we were both working and trying to afford living in Marin County, California
With one of us working, and living in a paid-for house in the Phoenix metro, capital gains are a feature, not a bug. They are reinvested if there is no dividend from the fund, or realized from a couple of the dividend payers to make the holidays a little more comfortable.
@TheShadow, that is a long but good list. I scanned it for "stories" - index funds and funds-of-funds (typically of index funds) with large CG distributions. Index funds with large redemptions can have this problem. I wasn't disappointed. Fido Real Estate Index FESIX 19% Principal SP SC600 Index PSSPX 9% Principal SP MC400 Index PMFPX 6% TIAA-CREF LC Growth Index TILIX 9% (I have it in 403b, so it doesn't matter) TIAA-CREF Lifestyle funds TIMIX 6%, TSAIX 7%, TSGGX 6%
@TheShadow, interesting about large CG distributions for SSGA index funds: SP500 Index (Class N) SVSPX 7.51-8.30% (Classes A, I, K have much lower CG distributions; these must be for a different series/pool) Hedged International Developed Index (class K) SSHQX 15.18-16.78% SMID Index SSMJX (class A) 12.44-13.75% (similar for Classes I, K)

(It is too early for funds to post estimates for 2022, but the article makes guesses based on funds’ potential CG exposures and reported outflows)

After the 2008's aftermath, I switched to index funds to minimize the unexpected large CG even in poor years.
TRP's PRMTX ....sheesh, glad I'm not in that one! Huuuuuge distro.
Click on the following the link and look at the second sentence.

Each category of funds has a retail and institutional class. For example, Group A has the retail class and the I-class. It appears the first table of funds in each group is the retail class while the second table in each group is the I-class shares.
Took me a while. Thanks for the input!

With one of us working, and living in a paid-for house in the Phoenix metro, capital gains are a feature, not a bug. They are reinvested if there is no dividend from the fund, or realized from a couple of the dividend payers to make the holidays a little more comfortable.

Need to check out the SSGA I just posted. Look for State Street S&P 500 Index Fund - Class N as well as some of the other index funds with SSGA.
SP500 Index (Class N) SVSPX 7.51-8.30% (Classes A, I, K have much lower CG distributions; these must be for a different series/pool)
Hedged International Developed Index (class K) SSHQX 15.18-16.78%
SMID Index SSMJX (class A) 12.44-13.75% (similar for Classes I, K)
