GRTVX - did anyone bite?

edited September 2012 in Fund Discussions
I read Mr. Snowball's assessment, then looked on GRTCapital website, then looked at M* (yeah I still do that) but didn't think it was anything great.

Then I read Mr. Snowball's assessment AGAIN. It says M* made mistake in analysing by miscategorizing. It's either ARIVX or GRTVX for me. I already have ARIVX so wanted to prod folks to see how they feel about GRTVX.

I've owned GRTVX for a while. I sold it to buy ARIVX and since then ARIVX has underperformed.

GRTVX is more aggressive and does better in a rallying market but also has significantly higher downside exposure in a declining market.

Personally, I would compare GRTVX with a fund like WSCVX.

    Sticking to ARIVX. Thank you.

As an aside, I worry WSCVX will go the way of CGMFX some day. Also I think just like Heebner, Walthausen is like 70+? Don't mean to sound morose but I'm planning to hold fund for 20 years after doing all my due diligence, I want a support system in place or a manager closer to my age. Having old manager with his name of the fund door is asking for trouble IMHO.

Some funds like YAFFX manage the transition properly. Funds like MUHLX, there is an offspring but he's not into management. People should worry.

Finally, just noticed the "Poll" on the right. How did we do that? Smart programming? Or someone did something manually. Impressive indeed.
  • Reply to @VintageFreak: As you're most likely aware of by now, we have a new user guide available under the Resources tab. Initiating a poll is not currently covered in that guide, but a revision will be posted within a week or so, and the "how to" will be fully covered at that time.
  • I bought it in April and just sold it for a loss. On the basis of opportunity cost, it did not appear to be worth the wait to see what might happen to GRTVX. Some purchases recently, MSCFX, FNMIX, PRMTX, not in the same type, varying capitalizations, but perhaps better in terms of diversification. I will still watch GRTVX, although information from them is rather hard to come by. I am more satisfied with these new additions. Time will provide more clues. I took a gamble and bought BMY today based on a Goldman report, and as a litmus test. Normally I stay away from individual issues, but there are some really big gainers out there, the trouble being, you guessed it, risk.
  • I bought sooner than you and have also sold the position. GRTVX did not hold a candle to Homestead or Walthausen, especially in this small-cap rally.
