Gundlach: A 'wave' of layoffs is coming for $100,000/year white-collar jobs

""What people may have learned for white-collar services jobs, in particular, during the work-from-home lockdown situation, at least in my perspective — I've talked to a lot of my peers on this — I kind of learned who was really doing the work and who was not really doing as much work as it looked like on paper that they might have been doing," Gundlach said."

  • I haven't seen much evidence of layoffs in the six-figure pay space but, possibly related, reports around here say that residential rents in San Francisco and Silicon Valley have tumbled 10 - 15% year-over-year. That's down from a ridiculously high level of course. The explanations include job losses as well as new telecommuters who are now free to move to more affordable cities.

Yeah. I don't know about this. Probably some truth to it. But also some cover for firing a lot of people in their 50's. Nothing new there.
  • If you don't trust the people, why hire them and then repeatedly keep them around in the first place?

I think What Jeff needs to keep in mind are the enormous childcare burdens some families face, and the role that education plays as day care in the US. Among my circle, I know couples who split shifts to help manage and (essentially) home school their kids.
  • @WABAC - minor correction, Mark never said that but he did quote Gundlach saying it.

Right. Notice how the quote function adds the "Mark said?"
