Trump Mulls Declaring an Insurrection and Sending Military Into Cities
It should be obvious to all peace loving protesters that they need to do all of their marching and chanting in the daylight and go home for supper and stay there. There will be another day, tomorrow, but not if you are shot. Unfortunately there is no national leader of non-violence now like MLK.
Nothing is served by continuing marches etc past a curfew, except to give the looters and agitators cover for their activities. According to news reports, David's son's friend that was killed apparently realized, too late, she was in a deteriorating situation. Midnight is no time for anyone to be on the streets during days like these.
While I agree with the general sentiment, I disagree with the assertion that "Nothing is served by continuing marches etc past a curfew."
In a broad sense, what is being protested is oppression by the establishment - in the law, in its enforcement, in the selective use of force, often excessive. Violating curfew is an explicit act of defiance, of civil disobedience, with emphasis on both of those words, "civil", and "disobedience."
The idea for the silent protest started with one thought 'What if every single NYer just walked right outside their homes when the curfew hit, and in that simple act of resistance, we send peaceful energy to all of us impacted by police violence?'
DIsperse when and because it makes sense, as you explained, not because the Man said to.
I've seen this statement lately, circulating, regarding the protests: "If your protest is approved by a permit obtained from the gov't, it's not a protest. It's a parade."
There surely is room for civil disobedience. Especially now, when the supposed "leader" is himself a childish, self-absorbed, ignorant, lawless criminal. Gandhi knew it, at the salt works, along with every brave soul who was with him there. MLK knew it, sitting in Birmingham Jail, composing his famous letter to fellow WHITE clergy who were content to just let Jim Crow be. In the Vietnam era, I participated in protests right at the Pentagon, but did not myself cross the line to engage in civil disobedience. The protesters today are brave souls, too: facing MILITARY tactics on the part of those wearing badges and uniforms.
Breaking the curfew sends a message. The goddam worthless, shitty criminal punks who are doing the destruction and looting must be stopped, of course. They are despicable, using valid protests as "cover."
It is our collective duty to tell the truth (like Jim Mattis in his published letter. @hank) The task is particularly urgent now, under current circumstances. The Criminal in Chief is still there in the White House, un-arrested, un-stopped, un-regulated by the spineless Repugnant Party-led Senate. Military leaders are uncomfortable with what's going on, ok. At what point will someone in that echelon stop and say: "No! There is some shit I will not eat." https://poets.org/poem/i-sing-olaf-glad-and-big
THEN there will be hell to pay, but the most visible, potent threat will have been neutralized. I refer to the criminal: little Donny, the tin pot dictator.
The president said he hoped Floyd, an unarmed black man who was killed by police in Minneapolis last week, would be looking down from heaven and approve of the job he is doing on the economy.
“Hopefully George is looking down right now and saying, ’This is a great thing that’s happening for our country,’” Trump said. “This is a great day for him. It’s a great day for everybody.”
Just started "A Very Stable Genius" from WaPo's Rucker and Loennig. Hair-raising. But remarks like those quoted above by LB only show that little donny is utterly divorced from anything relating to what it means to be human.
Lewis- It takes a very stable genius to understand and appreciate President Trump. Evidently you do not qualify for that particular category. Thank god.
He only yanked 9500 from Germany. And I bet it'd his 'revenge' for the heated chat last week where Merkel told him she won't attend the G-7 b/c she doesn't want to be part of a photo-op.

Hundreds of New Yorkers are planning to step outside their homes for 9 minutes at 8:01 p.m. in protest of the curfew and police brutality

On 16th Street, as in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, in Wash, D.C. Courtesy of Mayor Bowser. I love it. And a spot along the way has been re-named "Black Lives Matter Plaza."
