  • @crash,

FYI and not directly related to the OP - If I ever said good things about Scott Bessent, I am taking them back.
  • I see the article quoted people with an ax to grind, but did not obtain a response from the administration. That's not journalism. Its propaganda.

Different people cope being wrong differently.
    Different people cope adversity differently.
Denial is a coping (or even a default) mechanism for many human beings.

Finally, when you have a coalition of single issue voters, the coalition can hold up longer than it rationally should because it takes a long time for each and every issue to be proofed out. E.g., if a woman voted solely on the promise of getting free IVF treatment, you can not tell that person anything else negative that does not personally touch that person to sway that person's allegiance. Only when that person loses their job and not able to get an equivalent job back for a while, that person's priorities change, assuming having a job is important to that person.

(Strangely, humans are wired to think death happens to other people, until they themselves or their loved ones are at the doorstep.)

You can only hope for but can not impart understanding to others.

Resiliency is an underappreciated (or less understood) word and a character that is underappreciated both at work and social life. My wish to all of you is to surround yourself with resilient people and avoid people that use denial.

FYI - Not visiting this thread again.

The only people quoted in the article were two Canadian economists - what kind of axe do they have to grind? The fentanyl issue is BS - Customs and Border Protection data shows that only 43 pounds of fentanyl were seized in 2024 on the Canadian border: https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/stats/drug-seizure-statistics And others have pointed out that the majority of people who smuggle in drugs are American citizens.
  • Why does MFO put up with this trash on this forum. All of this sort of junk is only fit for Off Topic, which is totally controlled by this liberal group of cronies. This sort of junk is always posted by angry protesters that can't get over the fact that they lost the election. Get over it. Let President Trump try to correct the problems of this country. If he can't, you will have a chance to elect your man or woman in the next election.

Everyone has an axe to grind/bias. The article cited allegations but did not obtain a response. Not journalism. Propaganda.

Agreed. That's why the "news article' was posted.
  • "Let President Trump try to correct the problems of this country."

@hondo- President Putin will happily correct the problems of this country using King Trump as his dupe.
  • Well. Secretary Bessent had a lot to say today. One might almost get the impression that he would welcome a market collapse, and recession, as a way to lower interest rates and pass their agenda on deregulation and taxes. And in that context, the daily churn of tariff theater makes sense, because it sure is irritating Mr. Market.

I say "one might" because I'm not really sure what to make of his comments except that they helped inspire me to take money out of the market today because I don't see Tariff Theater leading to an industrial renaissance any time soon.

    @WABAC,

I saw you post and thus returned to this thread.

I have been saying for a while that all roads are paved to lead to tax cuts. For obvious reasons, the administration just can not spell it out like that. The media knows what the end game is but where is the value for them if they make it so easy. Thus, the theatre continues.

Secy Bessent has been the biggest disappointment. Everyone else has been par for the course.

Hegemony of the US by Putin will not be allowed by our current masters in Jerusalem...
  • I have zero sympathy for the current Israeli regime. El Trumpo is certainly pandering to Bibi. But "The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

Well, this is getting too close to politics for my appetite.

They're doing whatever they're doing. I don't need to makes sense of it. If they think it's important to beat down Mr Market with random act of tariffness, I'm willing to speed them on their way by selling all the winners in my IRA.
  • Trump's policy is to burn down the village in order to save it ...
  • CNBC: "When asked whether the decision to pause tariffs on many products from Canada and Mexico for one month was due to the stock market, Trump said the decision had “nothing to do with the market. I’m not even looking at the market...."

Anyone believing that last part, I have a bridge in Brooklyn, some swampland in Florida, and an icemaker in Kodiak to sell you. EVERYONE knows he considers the stock markets an indicator of his popularity/success....

    That was then.

    Now?

  • True, that was the first Term. In the second term he rolls differently.

Now, DJT and Meme Coins, which are long term holdings for him. does he personally own the US stock market indices? If not, he does not have to worry about the market. I think he is more focused on the real estate market where he is invested. So, the focus on long term rates helps there.
  • Lying scum. Tax cuts for the richest. Screw the Average Joe.

  • If Tariffs are re Fentanyl exported by the Mexican drug cartels, why not take away the most important thing needed for the survival of the cartels: lethal weapons made by the U.S. What is the US Govt doing to choke the flow of weapons to the cartels? Ironically, recently we designated these cartels as terrorist organizations while we also supply weapons to them. Seems like we are the source of the problem, however we look at it.

American ingenuity is definitely at work in finding drugs to consume. Supplier does not matter.
