Donald Trump has pledged to impose tariffs on overseas agricultural goods within weeks, as the White House mulls whether to make good on a threat to hit Canada and Mexico with steep duties from Tuesday.
The US president claimed his administration would introduce tariffs on farm products from 2 April.
A string of such deadlines – including vows to hit Canada and Mexico with tariffs in January, and then February – have been delayed, however, as economists and business urge caution.
“To the Great Farmers of the United States: Get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold INSIDE of the United States,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social network, on Monday. “Tariffs will go on external product on April 2nd. Have fun!”
On Tuesday, Trump has said the US will impose a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on China, on top of the 10% tariff it imposed on China last month.
These duties “will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled”, he declared last week, until the fentanyl crisis “stops, or is seriously limited”.

The markets aren't taking it too seriously. Worse case scenario seems to be that these tariffs are lifted just weeks after being instituted. Should be interesting to watch how he backpedals out of this.

Markets rolling over after he confirmed 25% on Canadian/Mexican stuff goes into effect tonight.
So much winning!
Treas. Sec. Scott Bessent: "It would be a nice gesture if Canada and Mexico matched our tariffs on China." Hint, hint, hint. Jayzuz, these doinks possess no small measure of spleen.
So how can countries avoid tariffs due to immigration and fentanyl.? Per FOTUS, by "moving their companies to the USA."
That's like a patient asking their doctor how to cure their acne and being told the remedy is to cut off their big toe.
Talk about the biglyest of idiotic non-sequitors.
Love the 100% tariff on Telsa idea. Go CANADA!!!
This is not about solving those problems but about funding tax cuts.

It is very true American farmers will get screwed again as other countries can impose their tariffs on the vulnerable American products such as meats.
We should be tariffing Israel.
"Some might take solace in the fact that betting on sharp further losses in stocks forces one to assume that the government will deliberately commit economic suicide by pursuing farcical policies and there is certainly some truth to that (this is mostly our view), but a few things to keep in mind: 1) Trump doesn’t think his agenda is damaging; 2) unlike in Trump 1.0, there aren’t any “establishment” voices advocating for a change in direction (the prominent positions are filled with people reinforcing Trump’s instincts rather than blunting them); 3) it’s not clear where Trump’s pain threshold lies, and the “Trump Put” may be a lot lower than present levels (What would get the White House’s attention? Will it take a 10% pullback in stocks? A monthly jobs report showing a net loss in employment?); and 4) irreparable harm to confidence and growth could be inflicted before it dawns on anyone."

"The US' net international investment position is massively negative at north of 70% of GDP. There are a lot of US$ assets that can be sold. Bringing the money home also has the benefit of getting ahead of any US plans to start taxing foreign ownership of US assets. This is part of the Miran plan on rebalancing trade and the US announcement last week of the America First Investment Policy seems like a move in that direction.
As the Trump admin elevates the trade war with tariffs, perhaps the best defense the rest of the world has against him is simply selling their US assets, taking their ball and going home."
No one that I can read has a rational explanation for attacking our Northern neighbor, accusing it, falsely, of being a major Fentanyl supplier, and destroying the US auto industry which makes most of its parts in Mexico. Canadians are very very angry and are canceling all of their trade with us. It will be a long time before any of them vacation here again.
How will cutting 1/2 of the IRS workforce reduce the deficit? Eliminating NIH funding, and NSF employees will gut the US preeminence in science and Medicine. Agricultural trade groups know that the USDA reductions will allow a dramatic increase in agricultural pests and diseases. Forest service cuts reduce firefighting capacity.
The list goes on and on. The one common effect is the destruction of the world's confidence in America's reliability and willingness to partner with people and countries for our common good and economic prosperity.
Musk's main motivation seems to be destroying anything that forces him to follow regulations or pay taxes, and Trump's vindictiveness.
The Dems' motivation seems to oppose any action which secures national borders, and inhibit murderous Venezualans from deleting little American girls. So I impute America-hatred to Dems...
The Dems think that men should compete with women in women's sports. So I impute mysogyny to Dems.
We can impute motivations all day long.
